Chapter 517 Outbreak

"Father," Huang Shi lowered his eyes, "did we hurt Ya Ya this time?"

Upon hearing this, Huang Shi's already slightly hunched back became even more stooped, and a hint of regret flashed in his eyes. "It's not just this once."

They had already hurt people long ago.

They realized today that their daughter-in-law had been drifting further and further away from them for a long time.

He's still unsure whether this problem can be resolved.

"father!"

Suddenly, a shrill scream rang out. Huang Shi turned his head and saw Uncle Huang Wu lying unconscious on the ground.

"Carry him on your back! Quickly carry him on your back. I'll have Dashan go and fetch a doctor."

"Mmm, I'm carrying someone."

After saying this, the man quickly carried the person home.

Uncle Huang is not young; a simple cold could be fatal, so it's impossible not to be worried.

"What kind of mess is this?!"

With a flick of his sleeves, Old Man Huang left with his hands behind his back.

Jiang Nuan's family was having breakfast when they heard a rapid knocking on the door.

"I'll go open the door," Jin Yong put down his chopsticks and explained sheepishly, "I'm already full, you guys continue eating."

Actually, he only ate half full, but he felt uneasy eating plain rice and kept thinking about doing more work.

"Okay, go ahead."

When Huang Shi saw Jin Yong, he simply said that they didn't need to plant rice together, and then hurriedly left.

He had something on his mind and dared not delay, and he also felt a little guilty.

“That’s even better,” Jiang Nuan wiped her mouth. “Our family doesn’t have many acres of paddy fields, so we can finish the work in two days. It’s okay if it’s a little late. It’s more important to give the workers a welcome dinner today.”

“Mother,” Xie asked, biting her chopsticks, “aren’t you surprised that something happened?”

Jiang Nuan wasn't that gossipy. "What's so strange about it? Anyway, it has nothing to do with us."

Knowing the result is enough; the process doesn't matter.

“No,” Xie said, eager to know, as if something was nagging at her. “I’ll go and find out.”

With that, he took a steamed bun, sandwiched an egg between it, and left.

“She’s so curious,” Jiang Nuan shook her head. “Never mind her, let’s continue eating.”

After returning to the old house with a sullen face, Old Man Huang remained silent.

Grandma Huang was not happy about what happened yesterday. Seeing Grandpa Huang's appearance, she couldn't help but say, "You look so gloomy first thing in the morning, like someone owes you money. Why are you giving me that look after you've been mistreated outside?"

"No," Old Man Huang frowned, "Old woman, have you noticed that the second son's wife has already drifted away from the old family home?"

Upon hearing this, Old Mrs. Huang's expression changed drastically. "Why do you say that? What did Ya Ya do?"

“I haven’t done much,” Old Huang said, conflicted. “It just feels like we’re not as close as we used to be.”

"How can you not be close?" Old Mrs. Huang's face immediately darkened. "They send delicious food to the old house every day, and it all ends up in the dog's belly? Don't you have any conscience? And what you're wearing, isn't it fabric given to you by her as a sign of respect?"

"This is different."

"What's the difference? If we don't get to the bottom of this today, we're not done yet."

After saying that, Old Mrs. Huang snorted coldly and turned her face away.

The old man is getting more and more ungrateful. Ya Ya practically treats them like royalty, and keeps saying all sorts of nonsense.

Isn't this deliberately stirring up trouble?

Upon hearing this, Old Man Huang thought about it carefully and listed the reasons one by one: "They come to visit less often. They used to visit every now and then, but now they don't come even once every three to five days."

"They're not close to us anymore; they keep everything to themselves and don't say anything."

"The gifts they sent were perfunctory. They were good items and expensive, but they weren't as thoughtful as before."

"Give me a break," Old Mrs. Huang scoffed. "You're really pushing your luck, aren't you? If you're going to cause trouble, at least say something plausible. What's the point of nitpicking?"

That old man, he went out for a trip and lost his head.

"No, I didn't," Old Huang explained helplessly. "I just feel that my second son's wife has become distant and overly polite with us. Didn't you really notice?"

Upon hearing this, Old Mrs. Huang remained silent for a long time before murmuring, "She wasn't without her heart before."

How could she not have noticed? She treats this daughter-in-law like her own daughter; how could she not know about the changes in her?

But she was too ashamed to say it.

You reap what you sow; you can't blame anyone else.

She had always known that her husband favored his eldest son, and no matter how well he tried to hide it, he couldn't hide it from her, his wife.

The eldest son and his wife were quite devoted to their youngest daughter-in-law, but they couldn't compare to the couple from Dashan.

Although she favored her youngest son, she was just a woman with little ability and couldn't offer much help. She could only try her best to take care of herself and not cause trouble for her daughter-in-law.

"This shouldn't be," Old Man Huang said, puzzled. "How could it have turned out like this out of nowhere?"

"Shouldn't you know best in your heart?" Old Mrs. Huang felt very ironic. "If you have any shame, just pretend you don't know anything, happily accept the things Ya Ya sends, say good things about her outside, and don't get close to her."

"What do you mean by that?" Old Man Huang was very unhappy. "How am I shameless?"

What did he do to say such awful things?

“Old man,” Old Mrs. Huang stared straight at her husband, “we’ve shared a bed for so many years. You can fool others, but you can’t fool me. The second son just passed away and you’re already using his whole family to pave the way for the eldest son. Don’t you have a conscience?”

"No, no," Old Man Huang said, somewhat flustered. "Don't talk nonsense."

“I’m talking nonsense,” Old Mrs. Huang stood up and asked sarcastically, “Do you dare say no?”

Why wouldn't you dare?

"Then tell me!" Huang the eldest shouted hysterically, then cried with red eyes, "When the second brother went, Xiao Chuan was not yet fifteen years old, and Xiao Shu was only thirteen. You separated their family right after the seventh day after the second brother's death."

“How can this be my fault?” Old Huang immediately retorted. “It was the Jiang family’s request, what does it have to do with me?”

"Come on, we both know each other well. You'd keep such a huge burden? Even without the Jiang family's request, you would have separated anyway. Maybe they knew that, which is why they asked for a separation."

"Nonsense!"

"I'm just making this up," Old Mrs. Huang said, "and there's really no evidence. Ya Ya is raising a bunch of kids, and how much has your grandfather helped her?"

"I, I..."

"What do you mean Xiao Chuan and the others are useless? That's all just an excuse. They're just thinking about the eldest son." Old Mrs. Huang suddenly felt very cold. "Da Shan has only been married for a year and you're already thinking so far ahead. You really are a good grandfather."

Grandma Huang emphasized the words "good grandfather" with extra force.

It sounds even more ironic.

“Don’t talk nonsense,” Old Man Huang said, as if his sore spot had been hit. “I didn’t, and you have no proof.”

“That’s right, I don’t have any evidence,” Old Mrs. Huang said coldly, “but I have a brain. What grandfather wouldn’t help his grandson? Only you are so heartless. Is it because you look down on them for being useless?”

"They're just kids, how can you tell what they'll amount to? It's just an excuse!"
