“Buy, why not buy?” Manager Jin’s face was as long as a donkey’s. “Give me three hundred, no, two hundred catties first.”
Buy a little to see how the price goes. We're practically family, so even if the price goes up, Old Lady Jiang won't dare raise it. What if the price goes down?
Manager Jin was busy calculating his next move. Jiang Nuan glanced at him sideways and then called on Jiang Chao to help load the car.
Before leaving, he instructed, "Bring the earthenware jar back tomorrow; the family needs it."
After seeing Manager Jin off, Jiang Nuan felt a surge of joy as she weighed the one tael of silver she had just received.
She managed to recoup some of her five taels of silver.
After seeing the two off and telling her family, she immediately began her great work of harvesting cabbages.
"Sister-in-law, how many cabbages are there in the village? Which family should we start with?" Jiang Nuan asked curiously, following behind Sister-in-law Huang.
"Let's go to the fourth aunt's house in the far north first. She has a lot of cabbages, and her daughter-in-law is somewhat acquainted with me, so she shouldn't say anything mean to me."
sweat!
I was afraid of being scolded!
Jiang Nuan felt a little heartbroken.
The people of Huangjiakou all share the same ancestor; only a small portion are beyond the fifth degree of kinship, while the majority remain relatives.
Even if those people are dissatisfied, shouldn't they at least consider the feelings of kinship? Jiang Nuan thought uncertainly.
The two walked to the row of houses on the north side that were close to the fields and stopped at a gate with a fence.
"Is Fourth Aunt here? I've come to drop by." Sister-in-law Huang called out to the house.
"Huang Bai's wife is here?" An old voice came from the low mud-brick house. "I'll come and open the door right away."
Then, an old woman wearing a blue cloth shirt walked over with a cane.
She stared intently at the door, then smiled and said, "It really is Huang Bai's wife. Come in and sit down, Auntie will pour you some water."
"Thank you, Auntie," Sister-in-law Huang said with a smile, then pushed Jiang Nuan behind her forward. "My sister-in-law is here too. She has something she'd like to trouble you with."
Upon hearing this, the woman's face suddenly turned cold. Without even glancing at Jiang Nuan, she spoke stiffly, "Huang Mu's wife, what are you doing here? My family is dirt poor, there's nothing for you to take advantage of."
"Auntie," Jiang Nuan shivered as she felt the chill around her, "you've misunderstood. I'm not here to take advantage of you."
"Not here to take advantage?" The old woman's eyes grew even colder. "Then are you here to bully people?"
As she spoke, she swung her cane at him, saying, "What, you're bullying me right here at my doorstep? This old woman doesn't want to help you, a junior, but don't push your luck."
“Auntie, you’ve misunderstood,” Sister-in-law Huang quickly explained, shielding Jiang Nuan behind her. “My sister-in-law wanted to buy some cabbage. She heard you had some, so she came to ask. It’s not free; it’s one penny per pound.”
"You're not here to cause trouble?" The old woman looked at the two in surprise. "One coin for a pound of cabbage?"
“Yes,” Sister-in-law Huang quickly replied, “My parents know about this too. If you don’t believe me, you can ask them. Besides, you are an elder, and no one would dare to lie to you!”
"Alright," the woman waved her hand, "Stop trying to force me to drink sugar water. You know what kind of person your sister-in-law is. She's got a black heart. What good can she possibly do? As long as she's not looking for trouble, that's good. Hurry up and leave. I'll take care of you."
After a pause, the woman added, "Next time you come alone, I'll make you some sugar water."
These words struck a nerve with Jiang Nuan, causing her heartache.
Even knowing that he might not be popular, he didn't expect to be treated this way.
