“Boss, thank goodness you still remember why you came here today,” Lai Zi squeezed out the words through gritted teeth. “I thought you had completely forgotten about me.”
He glared fiercely at the book in Inspector Niu's hand.
This very thing almost ruined his life's most important matter.
“I haven’t forgotten,” Inspector Niu stood up, brushed the dust off his clothes, and then chuckled, “How could I forget? This is the first time you’ve gotten married in all these years, who would dare not take it to heart?”
After saying that, he stuffed the book into his pocket, then waved his hand, "Hurry up, be quick, whoever delays the auspicious time, I'll give them a good beating with a salt water whip until their bones feel comfortable."
After saying that, he didn't dare to look at Lai Zi once, and rushed forward.
The rest of the people followed suit and disappeared in the blink of an eye.
Seeing this, Lai Zi felt a lump in his throat, unable to breathe properly. He wanted to vent, but there was no one around. If he didn't vent, he felt suffocated.
Finally, he kicked the chair twice and chased after Inspector Niu.
At Widow Qian's door, with the auspicious hour fast approaching, the main character still hadn't returned, and the matchmaker was extremely anxious.
Those of them in this line of work are particularly averse to certain things; they have to be very careful about the timing, as anything more or less is considered unlucky.
She wasn't afraid of feeling unwell herself; she'd become more open-minded as she got older. What she was worried about was that the young couple wouldn't have a good life and that these officials would cause them trouble.
She finally understood. This impatient young man seemed easy to get along with, but he was actually ruthless. If anything happened in the future, she, the matchmaker, wouldn't be able to escape.
“Young man,” the matchmaker looked at Huang Lao Er anxiously, “why don’t you go and see why he hasn’t returned yet? It’s bad luck to miss the auspicious time.”
"Okay, I'll go back and check..."
Before he could finish speaking, Huang Lao Er saw the crowd rapidly approaching.
“No need to go back,” he said, his mouth agape. “The people are already here.”
As the people drew closer, the matchmaker discovered something incredibly disheartening: the suitors for today were nowhere to be found.
After one thing after another, the matchmaker was exhausted. "Gentlemen, where is our groom? The auspicious time is almost here, why is there still no sign of him?"
In her anxiety, the matchmaker disregarded her own fears and her tone became somewhat angry.
Inspector Niu was extremely guilty and had no time to pay attention to these things. He smiled ingratiatingly and reassured the matchmaker, "I'll be there soon, don't worry, I won't miss the auspicious time."
No sooner had he finished speaking than Lai Zi came running over, panting heavily, his clothes and hair all disheveled.
Seeing this, the matchmaker could no longer contain her temper. "In all my years of matchmaking, this is the first time I've encountered someone like you. You rushed over right on time; if you're even a little slower, you'll be late."
As he spoke, he straightened his hair and clothes.
He said a couple of auspicious words at the door before pushing open the door that had been slightly ajar.
With a crisp and cheerful shout, the crowd carried the goods and ushered Lai Zi through the door.
Inside the hall, Qian Qing, dressed in a crimson robe, looked nervous.
"Fifth Aunt," she said nervously, "how much longer until the auspicious hour? Why haven't they arrived yet?"
"Almost done," Jiang Nuan said helplessly, putting down her teacup and waving her hand at Qian. "It's almost done. You should go back now and make sure they don't see us."
In this short time, she has said the same thing more than ten times.
Even after drinking three cups of tea, my throat still feels incredibly dry.
"Okay, I'll go back now," Qian Qing stopped and stood on tiptoe to look towards the gate. When she didn't see anyone, she walked back disappointed.
The closer it gets to the auspicious time, the more nervous and uneasy I become.
