Chapter 77 Poverty

"Sister-in-law," Jiang Nuan asked in confusion, "their family is in such dire straits, doesn't the clan lend a hand?"

“We can’t help,” Sister-in-law Huang shook her head. “As long as their family still needs to treat Huang Ye’s illness, it’s a bottomless pit that can never be filled.”

Even if the clan were rich, it wouldn't work. Once or twice is fine, but if it happens too often, who wouldn't be envious?

Which family isn't struggling to make ends meet?

“Ultimately, it’s because we’re too poor,” Jiang Nuan said thoughtfully. “Because we’re poor, we have no choice but to be so stingy.”

“That’s true,” Sister-in-law Huang nodded. “People in the village get along sometimes, and everyone has their own little schemes, but there’s no one with a black heart. Otherwise, Lai Zi would have been expelled from the clan long ago.”

Upon hearing this, Jiang Nuan's eyes flickered. "Sister-in-law, who are the three scourges of Huangjiakou?"

Upon hearing this, Sister-in-law Huang stiffened for a moment, then quickly changed the subject, "Why hasn't Huang Ye's wife come out yet? Has something happened?"

After saying that, he kept knocking on the door, asking, "Is anyone inside?"

"If you're coming, then you're here."

After the voice fell, a young woman dressed in a men's short-sleeved shirt came out. "Third Aunt, Fifth Aunt, is there anything I can help you with?"

The young woman's voice and cheeks were flushed, her eyes were shy, and she lowered her head, not daring to look at the two of them.

“Huang Ye’s wife,” Sister-in-law Huang seemed unsurprised, “Your fifth aunt wants to buy some cabbage, one coin per pound. We’ll take all the cabbages you have.”

"One coin per pound?" The young woman covered her mouth, her eyes widening in surprise. "How can it be so expensive?"

“Your third aunt wants to help the villagers out,” Sister-in-law Huang explained with a smile. “You know, she did some bad things in the past, but now she’s realized her mistakes and wants to make amends. Don’t overthink it; the whole village pays this price. It’s not like she’s deliberately giving any family a discount.”

"Thank you, Third Aunt and Fifth Aunt," the young woman nodded hurriedly, looking at the two gratefully, and said excitedly, "I still have forty cabbages at home, about two hundred catties, I will deliver them to Fifth Aunt's house right away."

“No need,” Jiang Nuan waved her hand, “I’ll have someone come and get it in a bit.”

After saying that, Jiang Nuan took out two hundred copper coins and handed them to the young woman. "Here are these copper coins for you. We'll weigh them later, and we'll make up the difference if there's any overpayment."

“No need,” the young woman hurriedly shook off Jiang Nuan’s hand, “I’ll pay you after I’ve moved the cabbages.”

After saying that, she glanced at Jiang Nuan cautiously and quickly asked, "Fifth Aunt, you're not lying to me, are you?"

“No,” Jiang Nuan’s face darkened. “Even if you don’t trust her, you should trust your third aunt. She vouched for me.”

“Yes, I’ll vouch for you,” Sister-in-law Huang immediately chimed in. “Your fifth aunt is cheating, so I’ll give it to you.”

“Okay,” the young woman immediately assured, “I’ll clean the cabbage right away and make sure there aren’t any bad roots or rotten leaves.”

After reaching an agreement, the two did not linger, exchanged a few pleasantries, and then went to their next destination.

On the way, Jiang Nuan asked in confusion, "Sister-in-law, why is Huang Ye's wife wearing men's clothes?"

“It’s perfectly normal,” Sister-in-law Huang shook her head. “Although this situation is not common, there are still a few families like this in Huangjiakou. The men are the pillars of the family, and they have to be the first to eat, drink, wear, and use everything. We women can only make do.”

“You can alter the clothes,” Jiang Nuan frowned. “Men’s clothes aren’t really that convenient to wear.”

“We can’t change it,” Sister-in-law Huang sighed. “Why do you think Huang Ye’s wife opens the door so late? She’s getting dressed.”
