"It's nothing," Old Mrs. Huang said, feeling a little sad. "Just pretend I'm talking nonsense."
Now it seems too late to say anything.
Trying to persuade your own husband to be fair? That's clearly impossible.
If he had even a shred of conscience, he wouldn't have been so cold-hearted towards Xiaochuan and the others.
"What exactly happened?" Old Huang asked, even more uneasy. "Old woman, don't scare me."
He always felt that his wife was not quite normal.
"It's nothing," Old Mrs. Huang said, calming herself down. "I know you feel sorry for your eldest son. From now on, you and your family should live a good life together!"
The old house was too stifling; she wanted to go to the second house to take good care of her younger daughter-in-law and grandchildren.
Do whatever you want!
After saying that, the old lady turned her face away and ignored Old Man Huang.
"You talk like you're not living with us anymore," Old Man Huang said, completely bewildered. "Why are you making such a fuss all of a sudden?"
Grandma Huang ignored these words.
Sister-in-law Huang, who was standing nearby, sensed something was wrong and immediately nudged Huang Shi.
"Mother," Huang Shi smiled ingratiatingly, "did Father make you angry?"
Upon hearing this, Old Mrs. Huang gave her eldest son a meaningful look and said, "Don't ask, you'll find out later."
“Mother,” Sister-in-law Huang smiled, “If there’s anything wrong, just say it. Don’t keep it to yourself. It’s painful to watch.”
"It's nothing," Old Mrs. Huang said calmly. "I just returned all the things that Ya Ya had given me as a sign of filial piety."
Upon hearing this, everyone's expression changed.
Sister-in-law Huang almost couldn't keep her smile. "Yaya probably won't accept it, right?"
"She's not short of money," Old Man Huang said, puzzled. "Why would you go back?"
"When we took it, we said we'd keep it for her," Old Mrs. Huang sneered. "Why are you all so agitated?"
"No, no," Sister-in-law Huang quickly explained, "I just feel it's too sudden."
"Really?" Old Mrs. Huang curled her lips. "I thought you had long regarded this silver as your own and were reluctant to return it."
“No,” Sister-in-law Huang took a breath. “How could that be? We’re not that kind of person to give you two gifts from Yaya.”
That's the right way to think about it.
After saying this, Old Lady Huang closed her eyes.
She had a lot to say, but she was afraid of ruining Jiang Nuan's plans, so she didn't dare to cause too much trouble.
"Old woman," Old Huang's expression was somewhat cold, "you really returned the things?"
He regretted it a little; he should have kept it.
"I gave it to her, but she didn't accept it."
As soon as she finished speaking, Old Mrs. Huang saw Old Mr. Huang's relieved expression and immediately glared at him fiercely.
“That’s true,” Old Man Huang rubbed his nose. “With Ya Ya’s skills, she can easily make ten thousand taels of silver from a single jar of wine. She wouldn’t care about this little bit of money.”
"What, you think it's not enough?"
This left Old Man Huang speechless.
He did feel it was a bit too little, but the money wasn't earned by him; they had already separated. Even if he was shameless, he couldn't just ask for it directly.
Whenever he thinks about this, he regrets that he broke up with his partner too quickly.
Whenever this thought crossed his mind, he would comfort himself by thinking that if they hadn't separated the family, his younger daughter-in-law wouldn't have been forced to show her face in public to make a living, and she would never have been able to earn so much money.
“Mother, don’t misunderstand,” Huang Shi said somewhat unsure of himself. “Father thinks that my second sister-in-law is very capable and wouldn’t care about these things.”
Upon hearing this, Old Mrs. Huang laughed in anger, "This old woman has different ideas from yours, I can't continue this conversation."
Other people's abilities are their own. If you're capable, make your own money. If you're not, don't be envious.
However, she also understood that this was easier said than done, as there were far too many people suffering from conjunctivitis.
Upon hearing this, the three exchanged uneasy glances.
That's as if they were something low-class or unworthy of respectability.
For a moment, the hall fell silent.
“It’s getting late,” Sister-in-law Huang said after a long while, feeling that she couldn’t stay any longer. “Daughter-in-law, go and cook.”
Just then, a knock sounded on the door.
"I'll go open the door," Huang Shi said, jumping up. "Father, Mother, you can talk things out slowly."
After saying that, he left immediately.
Upon seeing Jiang Nuan, Huang Shi felt a pang of guilt, perhaps because of his mother's words. "Second sister-in-law, you're here. Come in, come in quickly."
"Thank you, elder brother. Is Father here?"
"Everyone's here," Huang Shi paused, "Is there something you need, sister-in-law?"
"Um."
Jiang Nuan entered the hall, first giving the old lady a reassuring look before revealing her purpose, "Father, your daughter-in-law has come today to put an end to this once and for all."
"What do you mean by 'settling things'?" Old Man Huang asked, puzzled. "What do you want to do?"
Jiang Nuan didn't answer, but pushed a stack of papers in front of him. "Dad, these are the things we got when we divided the family property back then. The house deeds, land deeds, and other odds and ends have all been sorted out. We can return them anytime."
Upon hearing this, Old Man Huang put on a stern face, "What are you doing? What's given to you is yours."
“That’s right,” Huang Shi said, feeling puzzled. “Our family has always been fine. Sister-in-law, please don’t let those rumors ruin our relationship.”
“Father, your daughter-in-law hasn’t finished speaking,” Jiang Nuan lowered her eyes, “Your daughter-in-law has already completed the household registration for the branch family, and from now on has no connection with the old house.”
Upon hearing this, Old Man Huang's heart tightened. "Are you telling the truth?"
“Your daughter-in-law wouldn’t joke about something like this,” Jiang Nuan continued. “Furthermore, in order to completely sever ties between the two families, the second branch of the family will henceforth be registered only under your younger brother Huang Xu’s name, including Mother.”
Upon hearing this, Old Man Huang felt dizzy and asked again uncertainly, "What do you mean? I don't understand?"
"Second sister-in-law," Huang Shi's face was very unpleasant, "if you are dissatisfied with the family, you can say so directly. Why make things so embarrassing? Separating the clan is one thing, but to fabricate a non-existent Huang Xu is simply going too far!"
Huang Shi was really angry that they were treating important clan matters like child's play.
"Whether it's excessive or not," Jiang Nuan curled the corners of her lips, "you all have to accept it, just like the second wife before."
"Ya Ya," Sister Huang covered her mouth in disbelief, "you weren't joking just now?"
“The household registration is all done, and all the documents are filed with the government office,” Jiang Nuan chuckled. “Why would you still think I’m joking?”
Do you really have to say something harsh?
"You've come here this time to change the family tree as well?"
Huangshi's heart sank to the bottom of the sea.
"That's right."
“Yaya,” Sister-in-law Huang said, deeply hurt, “neither your parents nor my husband and I have ever wronged you. Why did you have to be so cruel? Aren’t you afraid of…retribution?”
"What nonsense are you talking about?" Old Mrs. Huang was very angry. "None of you have suffered retribution, so why would my Ya Ya? She's not like some people who scheme against their own blood relatives!"
Upon hearing this, Old Man Huang's face darkened. "What kind of time is this? You're still making things worse!"
