The old lady in the hall was making an indignant accusation.
"My lord, since Zhu married into our family, she has been lazy, disrespectful to her parents-in-law, and mistreated the servants. Moreover, she has not borne any children in three years and forbids my son from taking a concubine to carry on the family line. Such a wicked woman has truly disgraced our family. I beg you, my lord, to do justice for my son."
Her son knelt to one side, timid and afraid to utter a sound.
Zhu knelt upright, and upon hearing the distorted and distorted words, her face grew even colder, and her last hope vanished.
“Mother, that’s ridiculous. When I entered the family, the Xu family was destitute. They acquired a house and servants thanks to my dowry. To allow my husband to focus on his studies, you forbade me from seeing him. We only saw each other a handful of times a year. Where would this child come from?”
Grandma Xu was taken aback by her rebuttal in public, and even more surprised by her blunt and blatant words. She stared at her in astonishment.
The onlookers were in an uproar.
Zhu continued, "Just because my family is in business, you look down on me and think I'm marrying above my station with your educated son. You constantly set rules for me and gave me attitude, forcing me to kneel in front of the door in the cold, heat, winter, and snow, causing me to miscarry... Don't you know better than anyone why I don't have children?"
A look of guilt flashed across Old Mrs. Xu's face, but she quickly retorted, "Absurd! It's clearly your own incompetence that caused the death of my grandson, and you still dare to frame me!"
Madam Zhu sneered, "All the servants of the Xu family can testify. Does Mother dare to confront them?"
Grandma Xu was furious and embarrassed. "Those are all people you brought with you, so naturally they are all on your side."
"Oh?" Madam Zhu said in a calm tone, "So Mother still remembers. That was all my dowry. How could you so brazenly demand and seize it? According to the laws of the Great Yan, even if I die, my dowry should be returned to my maternal family. It has nothing to do with your Xu family."
"That won't do!!"
Old Mrs. Xu grew anxious, "A woman follows her husband wherever he goes, whether he's a chicken or a dog. Since you married my son, everything naturally belongs to the Shen family. You disrespect traditional wifely virtues and have violated the seven grounds for divorce. I've already shown you some decency by letting you take the divorce papers back home, yet you still insist on being unreasonable and aggressive, trying to take away the Xu family's property..."
The onlookers couldn't stand it anymore.
"This old lady must have lost her mind; she's starting to talk nonsense in broad daylight."
“She’s not crazy, she’s obsessed with money. My family lives right next to the Xu family’s house. That old lady is a mean-spirited person. She wears her daughter-in-law’s dowry jewelry every day and doesn’t give her a kind look. Now she wants to seize her daughter-in-law’s dowry. I’m ashamed to be her neighbor.”
"How can someone be so shameless? And her husband isn't even speaking up for her?"
"What else can I say? Filial piety is paramount, so naturally whatever my mother says goes. After all, my wife is from another family."
"However, Zhu's refusal to openly contradict her mother-in-law is truly unfilial."
"They're already riding roughshod over her, how can she expect to be filial? If you're mentally ill, go get treatment, don't just spout nonsense here."
Hearing the murmurs, Old Mrs. Xu's face flushed red. She turned around and glared at the crowd, shouting, "What's it to you? Shut up!"
The county magistrate, unable to bear it any longer, slammed his gavel.
"No noise is allowed in the courtroom."
Jiang Shumiao looked over, her gaze penetrating his body to see his true form.
Oh ho, it turns out to be a fox demon.
Zheng Han felt a chill run down the back of his neck for no apparent reason, as if he were being watched. He met Jiang Shumiao's gaze and was taken aback.
Where did this child come from?
A childish voice rang in my ears, "We're solving a case, sir. Where are you looking?"
Zheng Han was terrified and almost instinctively tried to run away.
But it was as if his feet were rooted to the ground, and he couldn't move at all.
His face changed, and his eyes were filled with horror.
The voice rang out again.
"Solve the case properly. If you can't get to the bottom of it, I'll make you appear in public."
A cold sweat broke out on Zheng Han's back.
Oh no, I've been found out.
He was absolutely certain that the voice he heard was that of the little girl. There are many versions of the folk tale about the goddess. But due to limited transportation and communication, few people know her true age.
According to conventional thinking, since she is a goddess, she certainly cannot be a child.
Zheng Han knew, however, that two years ago, the goddess had personally gone to the northwest to slay the snake demon and share the joy with the people.
The local people sculpted a statue of her.
She was a little girl.
After that incident, all the demons hiding among humans kept their tails between their legs. If they encountered a Taoist priest, they might be able to escape thanks to their higher cultivation. But if they encountered a god, they were doomed. Especially this child, she eats demons!!!
Aren't the gods supposed to despise demons? I've never heard of any god eating a demon.
The key point is that this cute and pretty little girl in front of you is most likely the goddess who eats demons.
Zheng Han felt that his demonic life had come to an end.
Heaven is going to destroy this demon!
He stood stiffly, forced to continue, "If what Zhu said is true, and the dowry is her private property, then even if she is divorced, the Xu family cannot seize it."
Old Mrs. Xu almost jumped up. "She disrespects her parents-in-law and is determined to cause my Xu family to die out. It is only right that the Zhu family should be made to pay compensation even if they go bankrupt. How can you, sir, side with this wicked woman?"
Zheng Han's face darkened.
You people are incredibly fortunate to be born as human beings, so how can you still be so mean, selfish, and greedy?
It is known that a demon needs to cultivate for at least several hundred years before it can transform into a human.
They are truly insatiable.
"presumptuous!"
His anger successfully intimidated the arrogant and cowardly old lady Xu.
“Mrs. Zhu, please continue.”
Madam Zhu was also taken aback, but then realized that the county magistrate was on her side, and she immediately felt reassured.
