Liu Yixin has indeed been having a lot of bad luck lately.
She almost tripped and fell flat on her face while walking, nearly poked her eye while embroidering, and her newly finished calligraphy was burned by a candlestick that was inexplicably overturned. Even attending a flower-viewing banquet wasn't peaceful. First, she was bumped into by a maid delivering flowers, getting her clothes muddy. While changing her clothes, a cat suddenly appeared out of nowhere and almost scratched her face, and then, as fate would have it, a roof beam crashed down.
She's incredibly lucky to be alive today.
What bothers her most is that she's been having nightmares every day lately.
Madam Liu initially didn't think anything of it, but too many coincidences piling up together became abnormal, and her visit today was also for this matter.
After a few pleasantries, she said, "To be honest, Your Highness, I have come to ask you for a favor today."
Xiao Yitang said politely, "Madam, you flatter me. Our two families are about to become related by marriage, so there's no need to stand on ceremony. Just say what you need to say."
Madam Liu looked at her daughter, her brows furrowed with worry. "My daughter, Yixin, has been having a lot of bad luck lately. I would like to ask the Princess to tell me if she has been bewitched by some evil spirit?"
Liu Yixin nervously clenched her hands.
Attracting evil spirits is not a good thing. She was worried that Princess Huyang would find her unlucky, and she was also worried that her bad reputation would implicate her family.
Xiao Yitang looked at her daughter beside her.
Jiang Shumiao walked up to Liu Yixin and carefully examined her face. "Sister Yixin, did you go to the cemetery a month ago?"
Liu Yixin let out a sound of surprise, her face showing a blank expression, and then shook her head.
"No, I've rarely gone out lately. The last time was to attend a flower viewing party."
She suddenly froze.
It seems that her bad luck started right after the flower viewing party.
Liu Yixin felt somewhat uneasy.
Jiang Shumiao touched her brow with her fingertip and quickly discovered the problem.
"It's just a flower-viewing party; there's a dead person in the dry well in the backyard."
Liu Yixin gasped, her face turning pale.
Madam Liu was also startled.
It's not that people dying is a big deal, but the key is that if someone is thrown into a dry well, then that person most likely didn't die a natural death.
If there are gods and demons in this world, then there are naturally ghosts.
It is said that some people who die unjustly will return as vengeful ghosts to seek revenge.
She shuddered. "Princess, is my daughter being haunted by a ghost?"
Jiang Shumiao said, "No, it's just that it got tainted by some yin energy, which is why it's been so unlucky. It'll be fine once it's dispersed."
When Madam Liu saw that she had only waved her hand lightly, Liu Yixin could clearly feel as if something had been drawn out of her body. The listlessness and fatigue disappeared instantly, and she felt refreshed.
Her face lit up with joy, and she quickly stood up to bow.
"Thank you, Princess."
Jiang Shumiao waved her hand with a smile, "Once you and your second brother get married, we'll be family, so don't be so polite."
Liu Yixin's cheeks flushed slightly, and she looked very shy.
That evening, based on Liu Yixin's memory, Jiang Shumiao secretly sneaked into the Ye residence where she was attending the flower-viewing banquet. Ye Wenzhou, the head of the Ye family, was the newly appointed Minister of Personnel after the downfall of the Xie family. His wife, Princess Duanmin, was Liu's cousin.
The flower viewing party last month was hosted by Princess Duanmin.
Jiang Shumiao deliberately concealed herself and went to the backyard to find the dry well.
It was pitch black; you couldn't see anything.
With her eyes closed, she scanned the area with her divine sense and indeed found a skeleton.
But there were no ghosts.
Jiang Shumiao suddenly stretched out her right hand, her arm instantly lengthening, and when she pulled it back, there was a tabby cat.
It was the same one that almost scratched Liu Yixin.
The tabby cat was held in her hand, its lake-green eyes darting around in fear, but it couldn't make a sound.
Jiang Shumiao touched its brow with her left hand and extracted a wisp of its soul.
"So it was you who was causing this trouble."
The ghost had been separated from the body for so long that its appearance was no longer recognizable, but its voice still indicated that it was a woman's.
"I did not haunt."
The female ghost was shocked, frightened, resentful, and indignant. "It was that old woman. In order to marry into a wealthy family, she tore Ye Lang and me apart and threw me into a dry well, burying me with mud and stones until I died. I was not reconciled and only wanted justice, but she called in a Taoist priest to perform a ritual to try to break me apart. I had no choice but to possess this cat."
Jiang Shumiao looked at the dead cat in her hand... cat bones.
Yes, the tabby cat died a long time ago.
Only when the soul returns to the underworld can the body be possessed by a female ghost.
It's the same principle as a demon possessing a human's body.
"Then why did you go to Sister Yixin? She didn't harm you."
The female ghost grew increasingly resentful, "She's the granddaughter-in-law the old woman chose! If it weren't for her, how could I have died? And how could I be trapped here, unable to get in or out?"
Jiang Shumiao was unhappy. "Sister Yixin is my brother's fiancée. They will get married next year."
The female ghost laughed loudly.
"The old woman schemed and plotted, but in the end, it was all for naught. She deserved it!"
Jiang Shumiao said, "I have already broken the formation here. I will inform the Emperor of Fengdu, and soon a ghost messenger will come to take you to the underworld."
"No, I don't want to be reincarnated!"
The female ghost trembled violently, her voice shrill, "I want revenge on that old woman! She killed me."
Jiang Shumiao slapped him, "A wandering spirit that harms people violates the rules of the underworld and will be punished. Do you still want to be reincarnated?"
The female ghost cried out in grief and indignation, "But I'm not reconciled! A vengeful spirit who harms people is punished, yet she commits murder and gets away scot-free. Why? Just because I'm a slave? Aren't slaves human? Don't they deserve justice? I'm not reconciled!"
She struggled even more fiercely.
This statement is both right and wrong.
