The next day, sunlight streamed through the mint-green blinds, dappling a face with deep features. Gu Rongqi was awakened by these dappled lights and shadows.
He felt a hard texture beneath him; the fabric that touched his skin wasn't smooth silk, but rather a rough, doughy feel, carrying the fragrance of jasmine. The slightly heavy weight of the blanket made him feel somewhat comfortable.
He paused for a moment, and as his consciousness returned, scenes from the previous night flooded back into his mind.
He took a deep breath and sat up. This small room contained many strange and incomprehensible things.
A tissue box with swollen-eyed frogs, a Buddha statue with an octopus hanging behind the sofa, a cartoon version of Guan Yu on the TV cabinet, and miniature clay offerings in front of it...
He rubbed his throbbing temples and saw the bright red and green clothes he was wearing, and the blanket he was covered with had the words "Einstein Blanket" printed on it, along with a picture of Einstein sticking out his tongue and tilting his head. His face darkened even more.
He went to the bathroom and saw the suit in the dirty laundry basket; a strong smell of alcohol wafted into his nostrils.
His brows were furrowed tightly, as if he was struggling internally, but in the end he took the suit out of the dirty laundry basket and put it on.
My phone wasn't in my pocket; I left it on the table after meeting with friends who had returned from abroad yesterday and didn't take it back.
After a quick wash and to calm myself down, I walked to Cheng Qicai's room.
Cheng Qicai was having a sweet dream with drool in her mouth when she was woken up by a knock on the door.
Who is it that disturbs my peaceful sleep?
She irritably threw off the covers, her fair feet groping for her slippers on the floor. Still half asleep, she opened the door. "Mr...Mr. Gu, good morning?"
Upon seeing the person at the door, she was instantly jolted awake and stammered a greeting.
"Good morning, can I borrow your phone?"
Cheng Qicai immediately ran to the bedside table, took out her phone, unlocked it, and handed it to Gu Rongqi.
Gu Rongqi tapped a few buttons on the screen and made a phone call.
Cheng Qicai didn't know who he was calling. He heard Gu Rongqi say a few words and then hung up the phone.
Both were fully conscious, and the two complete strangers fell silent for a moment. Cheng Qicai weakly said, "President Gu, I'm going to buy breakfast. Is there anything you'd like to eat?"
“I’ll go with you.” Gu Rongqi regained the composure and politeness he had shown Cheng Qicai at the company.
Cheng Qicai glanced at Gu Rong's sour and wrinkled suit and said tactfully, "I'll go instead. The breakfast shop is downstairs in the residential area, not far."
Gu Rongqi also felt that this outfit was indeed inappropriate for going out, and politely said, "Thank you for your trouble."
He took out his wallet from the inside pocket of his suit and gave Cheng Qicai a few red bills.
"No need, Mr. Gu." Cheng Qicai politely declined, but her eyes were fixed on the red money.
Gu Rongqi saw the same expression on her face as the restaurant's three million, and stuffed it into her hand, saying, "Consider this money as accommodation and breakfast expenses."
Cheng Qicai took the money and, still feigning politeness, asked, "By the way, Mr. Gu, do you need me to buy you a set of clothes?"
"No need, I'll ask Li Gui to bring the clothes over."
After changing her clothes and putting away the quilt that Gu Rongqi had slept in, Cheng Qicai went downstairs. She took out the money that Gu Rongqi had given her, rubbed her hands together, and started counting it.
One hundred, two hundred, three hundred...
There are a full thousand!
It was worth it to take Gu Rongqi in. To thank him for his generosity, Cheng Qicai bought several kinds of breakfast.
Small effort, big reward.
Cheng Qicai, biting into a steamed bun, cautiously asked Gu Rongqi in front of her, "Mr. Gu, do you remember what happened last night?"
Gu Rongqi paused in his drink of soy milk, then said casually, "I don't remember."
"What, did I do something inappropriate last night?"
Cheng Qicai shook her head, carefully observing Gu Rongqi's expression. She couldn't detect any trace of lying, so she believed Gu Rongqi's story.
Halfway through the meal, there was a knock on the door. Cheng Qicai opened the door and saw a familiar face—Li Gui, Gu Rongqi's secretary.
"Secretary Li, hello." Cheng Qicai stepped aside to let Li Gui in, and pointed to the breakfast on the coffee table. "Secretary Li, have some breakfast. I bought a lot."
"OK, thanks."
Li Gui politely thanked him, went into the house and handed the clothes in his hand to Gu Rongqi. When he saw that it was Cheng Qicai who opened the door, his mind went blank for a moment, wondering how they got involved.
Although he was inwardly shocked, he outwardly concealed his shock as calm.
Gu Rongqi took the clothes and said to Cheng Qicai, "Can I use your restroom?"
The living room wasn't very big to begin with, and after Cheng Qicai left her parents, many of the small things that Ms. Yun had forbidden her to buy could now be freely placed around the house by Cheng Qicai.
Therefore, Cheng Qicai, like a wild horse, was very unrestrained and decorated the house with a lot of miscellaneous small items and green plants. The crowded but orderly layout made her feel very safe.
Coming home after a long day at work and seeing the house full of things I love makes all the day's fatigue disappear.
When Cheng Qicai finished washing the cups in the kitchen and came out, she saw Gu Rongqi come out after changing his clothes.
Wearing a loose, brown cotton T-shirt, her hair, which wasn't styled with hair wax, was soft and droopy, making her look much younger.
His unusual appearance caught Cheng Qicai's eye a few more times, but then she remembered the image of him lying on her phone wearing a red and green nightgown, and guiltily looked away.
The room was just the right size for two people, but now with Li Gui added, it feels cramped.
The three of them were not familiar with each other, and they were each other's direct superiors, so the atmosphere was extremely awkward.
This is no less significant than when your homeroom teacher visits your home during junior high school.
The other two remained expressionless, but Cheng Qicai, the hostess, felt an awkward chill run down her spine. She put on a fake smile, placed the water she had poured in front of Li Gui, and pushed the steamed buns on the table to him: "Secretary Li, don't be shy."
