Gu Rongqi felt his arm tighten, and his perspective changed as Cheng Qicai pulled him into the stairwell.
Then Cheng Qicai put her index finger to her lips and gestured for him to be quiet.
She was still using the same hand that was covering her mouth.
The next second, he saw Cheng Qicai turn around and leave.
He could also hear Cheng Qicai's clear voice responding to the person who had spoken earlier, "He's got the wrong person. The person he's looking for is upstairs, on the only floor. I told him to go through the stairwell; I just pointed him there."
"Really? You're not hiding someone in the stairwell, are you?" Gu Rongqi heard another female voice ask.
"How could that be?" he heard Cheng Qicai retort. "Mom, how could I be someone you can't stand?"
"Maybe it's a man."
Cheng Qicai said with a hint of helplessness, "Mom, if I were a man, wouldn't you have to see me even more? That way, I could silence all the things you said about me."
Ms. Yun thought it made sense.
Their voices grew softer and softer until they disappeared completely.
Gu Rongqi, standing in the stairwell, quietly listened to the conversation in the corridor, silently touching his lips.
Cheng Qicai pushed Ms. Yun into the house, and Mr. Cheng asked, "Who is it?"
She repeated her lie again.
"Mom, do you still want to eat strawberries?" Cheng Qicai asked guiltily.
"No, we'll stay for a while and then leave," Ms. Yun said.
Hearing that she was leaving, Cheng Qicai was secretly delighted and looked forward to it.
However, when Ms. Yun returned from using the restroom, she saw the green plants on her balcony and insisted on taking a few pictures of them.
They kept calling her over and asking her questions. Looking at Ms. Yun's excited face, Cheng Qicai could tell that she had no intention of leaving at all.
Her heart was pounding, and she was worried about Gu Rongqi in the stairwell. Had he left yet?
She took out her phone and checked it; more than twenty minutes had passed since then.
She thought, "It's been so long, Gu Rongqi should have left by now, right?"
Ms. Yun's words interrupted Cheng Qicai's thoughts, "I'll take your bowl lotus and cactus home."
Cheng Qicai looked at the bowl lotus in Ms. Yun's hand and exclaimed, "No way, Mom, I've been raising this for a long time!"
"It's okay, you can raise it again, or I can give you half of it."
Her flowers are already budding, okay?
And what does "sharing half with you" even mean? This is clearly her stuff, but in her mouth it's suddenly become hers.
The speed was incredibly fast.
When she saw that Ms. Yun's hand was about to touch the leaves, she immediately compromised: "Never mind, Mom, don't divide them. You can take one pot."
Separating them now might affect the flowers' blooming, so it's better to let her take them with her so I can go home and check on them.
Upon hearing Cheng Qicai's agreement, Ms. Yun immediately called to Mr. Cheng in the living room and handed him a pot of flowers.
With one pot each, the two of them finally brought up the matter of going back.
After seeing them off to the elevator, Cheng Qicai glanced at the stairwell again, but no one was there.
She felt relieved; it seemed Gu Rongqi had already gone back.
