Before we knew it, it was about 5:30 in the afternoon.
The two have pieced together about a third of the puzzle.
Gu Rong stood up and kissed Cheng Qicai's cheek. "I'll go cook."
"I'll come help you once I finish this piece."
"It's okay, take your time putting it together."
Gu Rongqi walked into the kitchen, skillfully opened Cheng Qicai's refrigerator, found the ingredients he wanted, and took them out.
Cheng Qicai connected the pieces that Gu Rongqi had pieced together with some that she had pieced together herself.
Just as she was engrossed in her work, her phone rang.
She answered the phone, "Hello, Mom?"
"Seven Colors, are you home?"
"At home." A bad feeling rose in Cheng Qicai's heart.
"It's good that you're home. I made some pickled peppers for you and brought them over..."
Cheng Qicai jumped to her feet and asked anxiously, "No, Mom, where are you?"
"In the elevator..."
"..." Cheng Qicai hurriedly hung up the phone and rushed to the kitchen.
She grabbed Gu Rongqi's hand and pulled him out of the kitchen. "Quick, quick, my mom and the others are here..."
Cheng Qicai looked around the room and realized that only her bedroom could hide someone. Before Gu Rongqi could react, she slammed the door shut.
"Knock, knock—" The knocking at the door sounded like a death knell.
After hiding Gu Rongqi, Cheng Qicai walked towards the door. As she turned around, she almost tripped over something on the ground.
She looked down and saw that Huang Jindou was still grinning foolishly around her.
She was sweating even more on her forehead. She had almost forgotten about it.
She reopened the bedroom door, bent down, and pushed Golden Bean's bottom forcefully inside.
Before it could turn around, Cheng Qicai slammed the door shut.
Wiping the sweat from her forehead, Cheng Qicai walked to the door and pretended to be calm as she opened it.
"Why did it take so long?" Ms. Yun asked as she entered the room, giving her a once-over.
"Going to the toilet," Cheng Qicai said with a laugh.
Ms. Yun went in, sat on the sofa, looked at the jigsaw puzzle on the coffee table, frowned and said, "What time is it? Haven't you made dinner yet?"
"It's in progress! It's in progress!" Cheng Qicai poured two glasses of water for Mr. Cheng and Ms. Yun.
Ms. Yun suddenly asked, "Did you have a guest just now?"
"No!" Cheng Qicai quickly denied.
Ms. Yun became even more suspicious, and she squinted at Cheng Qicai.
Seeing this made her sweat even more on her forehead and palms. "Mom, didn't you bring me pickled peppers?"
"Hmm... take one of these jars for Xiaoqi too," Ms. Yun said, her attention diverted, as she took two jars of chili sauce from the bag and handed them to her. "By the way, did you give Xiaoqi the sauce I gave you last time?"
“He gave it to me, and he said it was quite delicious.” Cheng Qicai picked up the pickled chili peppers. “But I’ll pass on this one; he doesn’t eat spicy food.”
She went to the kitchen and put it in the refrigerator.
Looking at the dishes that Gu Rongqi had half-prepared on the table, Cheng Qicai asked the lady in the living room, "Mom, have you eaten yet?"
At this point, Ms. Yun and the others have most likely already eaten.
"Not yet! I was originally going to call you out to eat together, but your dad and the others got their bonuses from a project they've been working on recently..."
Misjudgment. Hearing Ms. Yun say that, she panicked a little.
"So...?" she asked with a glimmer of hope.
"I see that you've only cooked half of the dishes in your kitchen. We'll just eat here for now, and if we get hungry later, we can grab a late-night snack outside."
Her heart was completely dead. She shouldn't have said anything. "Uh... I think..."
Cheng Qicai was a little unsure how to put it. If Ms. Yun ate here, it meant that Gu Rongqi would have to stay in her bedroom for more than an hour.
Ms. Yun frowned and asked unhappily, "What's wrong? I ate your food, and you're not happy about it?"
"No." Cheng Qicai pursed her lips and shook her head when she saw her staring at her.
It seems we can only wait until they finish eating and leave before Gu Rong can get it out.
"Then I'll go cook!" Cheng Qicai said, giving in.
Mr. Cheng stood up. "Seven Colors, I'll help you!"
"It's okay, Dad! I'll go."
"Eat early so you can go out and go shopping with your mom and buy you and your daughter a new outfit."
Hearing Mr. Cheng say this, Cheng Qicai had no choice but to go into the kitchen with him.
"Seven Colors, what are you going to do with this marinated meat?" Mr. Cheng asked.
"Uh... stir-fry?" Cheng Qicai was unsure. The meat was marinated by Gu Rongqi, and she didn't know what he wanted to cook.
"..." Mr. Cheng was silent for a moment, "Then what about your fish?"
"Steam it..."
Cheng Qicai used her old rice cooker to cook a new batch of rice, so she wouldn't have to take out the cooked rice.
Mr. Cheng quickly sliced the ginger and placed it on the back of the fish before steaming it.
"Cheng Qicai!" Ms. Yun shouted from outside, "Why is there a noise coming from your bedroom? Did you eat something in your bedroom and didn't clean up, and a mouse got in..."
"I told you, you have to throw away your trash after you eat..."
When Cheng Qicai heard Ms. Yun say that there were sounds coming from her bedroom, her expression changed drastically.
"Mom, don't open my door..." Cheng Qicai didn't even care about cooking anymore and rushed out to stop her.
She knew that, given Ms. Yun's personality, she would most likely open her bedroom door and go in to check on her.
Unfortunately, she was a step too late.
She saw Ms. Yun with half her body inside the room, looking at Gu Rongqi sitting on her bed, with a silly dog squatting next to Gu Rongqi's legs.
Ah!!! Heaven is going to destroy me!!!
Cheng Qicai swallowed hard, unsure how to handle the situation.
"Hello, Auntie!" Seeing the door open, Gu Rongqi, who was sitting in the room, stood up and greeted Ms. Yun with a smile.
Seeing Mr. Cheng coming out of the kitchen, he nodded and smiled in greeting, "Hello, Uncle!"
“Hello…” Mr. Cheng replied blankly, not understanding what was going on.
Golden Bean didn't notice the atmosphere. When it saw the door open, it took small steps to Cheng Qicai's side and nudged her hand, wanting her to play with it.
But Cheng Qicai doesn't dare to move at all right now!
It felt like any movement would trigger a landmine.
As Huang Jindou passed by, he gently bumped into Ms. Yun, who was standing at the door.
Ms. Yun also came to her senses. She turned her head and glared fiercely at Cheng Qicai, gritting her teeth as she said to her, "Qicai, your former boss is here, and you didn't even say anything, haha."
That laugh was incredibly awkward! Hearing Ms. Yun's tone, Cheng Qicai knew she was doomed!
