She saw some melon seeds on the table, grabbed the jar, scooped up a handful, and placed it in front of Gu Rongqi.
Gu Rongqi refused, saying, "I won't eat it, you eat it."
Cheng Qicai's attitude was firm, "No, you have to eat it. Otherwise, if Ms. Yun sees it later, she'll say I didn't give it to you. Do you want me to get scolded again?"
Seeing the threat in Cheng Qicai's eyes, Gu Rongqi picked up a melon seed and cracked it into his mouth.
Watching him eat, Cheng Qicai grabbed a handful of food and put it in front of herself.
There's a note left where the jar used to be.
Bright red, it was particularly eye-catching.
Cheng Qicai picked it up and glanced at it. Upon seeing the contents, she frowned slightly.
Because her own birth date was written on the left, and Gu Rongqi's should be on the right, Cheng Qicai still showed it to Gu Rongqi for accuracy.
Is the birth date on the right yours?
Gu Rongqi looked at it and nodded.
"No, how come my mom and the others have your birthday?" She remembered that she hadn't told her.
"When we last met, Auntie asked me something." Seeing Cheng Qicai's silent expression, Gu Rongqi asked again, "So what's this for?"
Cheng Qicai immediately knew what was going on. She tossed the note onto the table and said casually, "It's a fortune teller."
"Fortune telling...?" Gu Rongqi's mind went blank for a moment.
Although his family also observes these things, he doesn't believe in them.
"It's probably because my mom went to that so-called master again to calculate our fate." Cheng Qicai said irritably. "Wait a minute, whatever the master says, don't take it to heart."
The two ate sunflower seeds together for a while, and then Mr. Cheng called them to eat.
Ms. Yun served Gu Rongqi a bowl of pig's trotter soup. "Xiao Qi, try it and see if it suits your taste. I'm not bragging, but everyone who's tried my pig's trotters says they're delicious!"
Gu Rongqi smiled and accepted it, "Thank you, Auntie! I've had your cooking before, and it was really delicious."
"Huh? You've eaten there?" Ms. Yun was taken aback and her gaze fell on Cheng Qicai.
Cheng Qicai lowered her head and stuffed white rice into her mouth, secretly kicking Gu Rongqi under the table.
Why are you talking so much!
Ms. Yun smiled again, "Eat more if it suits your taste. Cheng Qicai, you too."
Starting with Cheng Qicai, the pronunciation was quite heavy.
Cheng Qicai changed the subject, "Mom, what's with that note on your table? Did you consult some fortune teller about us again?"
“Oh dear,” this time Ms. Yun’s eyes began to dart away, “It was just a random calculation, you can’t just say something like that and it won’t be accurate.”
Ms. Yun's reaction was completely unexpected by Cheng Qicai.
This is inappropriate; Ms. Yun should never have reacted this way...
Her gaze shifted to Mr. Cheng.
Mr. Cheng laughed, "Your mother went to a fortune teller, and they said your birth charts aren't very compatible, that you're somewhat incompatible, and that being together will bring bad luck..."
Cheng Qicai and Gu Rongqi exchanged a knowing glance.
She recalled that when she first met Gu Rongqi, the two of them were indeed prone to bad luck.
Her heart began to pound with unease, and she said in a defiant tone, "Mom, don't go looking for any fortune tellers next time. Gu Rongqi and I are doing just fine, there's no bad luck at all."
“Your mother and I said the same thing. Your mother just likes to overthink these things.” Mr. Cheng looked at Gu Rongqi. “Rongqi, don’t mind it.”
Gu Rongqi shook his head. "No."
After dinner, on their way back.
Cheng Qicai felt a strange feeling when she thought about what Mr. Cheng had said. She looked at Gu Rongqi and asked, "You said that we were always unlucky back then. Was it really because our horoscopes didn't match or that we were incompatible?"
Gu Rongqi was silent for a while before saying, "No, it's a coincidence."
He spoke with certainty, and then added at the end, "We haven't had any bad luck since we got together, which means it's actually incompatible of us not to be together."
"Haha..." Cheng Qicai couldn't help but laugh when she saw Gu Rongqi's serious analysis.
But before the laughter subsided, the car started making a clanging noise.
With a jolt, Gu Rongqi pulled the car over to the side of the road.
Cheng Qicai asked, "Did the tire burst?"
"It should be."
The two got out of the car and saw that the right rear tire had blown out.
Cheng Qicai's laughter grew louder, "Hahaha, you've been proven wrong!"
This is practically an O. Henry ending!!!
What surprised Cheng Qicai even more was that Gu Rongqi didn't know how to handle it. But after thinking about it, she felt that it was reasonable for him not to know how to do it, since he had always had a dedicated person to handle it.
In the end, Cheng Qicai called a tow truck to remove the car.
When Cheng Qicai returned home, she still felt that this coincidence was too incredible, as if even God was denying what Gu Rongqi had said.
However, she didn't take it to heart; cars are prone to tire blowouts in the summer anyway.
But it wasn't until a few days later that Gu Rongqi gave her a jade bracelet.
At first, Cheng Qicai was a little confused, thinking that she had forgotten some kind of anniversary.
When she asked nervously, Gu Rongqi simply said, "Blessings."
Upon hearing this, Cheng Qicai immediately thought of their incompatibility, but then felt that her idea was a bit far-fetched. Gu Rongqi didn't seem like the kind of person who would believe in such things!
But what if...?
After thinking for a moment, she hesitated before asking, "You don't actually believe that we're incompatible, do you?"
Gu Rongqi didn't say anything, but simply took the bracelet from her hand and put it on for her.
