Chapter 66 Dog

Cheng Qicai's first thought was a big rat. Just thinking about that shiny black, oily rat made Cheng Qicai shudder, and her hair stood on end like a hedgehog.

She helped Gu Rongqi put Gu Liji in the back seat.

As Cheng Qicai approached the passenger side door, she heard a soft "whimpering" sound. She listened intently and turned to see a small yellow puppy standing upright, pawing at the trash can and sniffing at it. The trash can was too high, so its efforts were clearly futile.

Seeing its pitiful state, Cheng Qicai returned to the trash can. Upon hearing the footsteps, the puppy immediately hid under the trash can again.

Gu Rongqi got on the bus but Cheng Qicai didn't. When he got off, he saw her squatting next to the trash can, looking down at something.

He stepped forward and asked, "What's wrong?"

“There’s a puppy inside,” Cheng Qicai replied, making soft sucking sounds as she tried to lure it out.

The puppy was clearly terrified, and shrank back even further when it heard her voice.

Gu Rongqi said, "That way it won't come out."

Cheng Qicai agreed, stood up, and thought about how nice it would be if there was something to eat.

She couldn't help but look at Gu Rongqi, and saw that Gu Rongqi shook his head at her, which meant that he understood what she was thinking.

Cheng Qicai was somewhat disappointed. If such a small dog was left unattended, it would likely freeze to death in this cold weather very soon.

Thinking of this, Cheng Qicai hardened her heart and found a tree branch by the roadside.

Holding the tree branch, she told Gu Rongqi about her plan: "Mr. Gu, in a little while, you use this tree branch to rush towards me, and I'll grab it, okay?"

Gu Rongdian nodded. Cheng Qicai remembered that he was a bit of a germaphobe, so he wrapped the bottom of the branch with a tissue before handing it to him.

Cheng Qicai stood on the right, some distance from the trash can, assumed a horse stance, bent over, and spread her arms in a ready position. She nodded to Gu Rong to indicate that she was ready.

Cheng Qicai stared intently at Gu Rongqi's movements, seeing him squat down and poke the dog with a stick. The little dog kept whimpering, becoming even more frightened by Gu Rongqi's actions.

Suddenly, a dark shadow rushed towards Cheng Qicai. Cheng Qicai stepped forward and bent down to try and grab it. But the little dog was clever; seeing Cheng Qicai trying to stop it, it turned around and rushed back towards Gu Rongqi.

This little thing even knows how to use feints!

"Mr. Gu, grab it!" Cheng Qicai shouted to Gu Rongqi.

Upon hearing her words, Gu Rongqi quickly threw away the branch in his hand and reached out to catch the puppy that was running towards him.

Although the dog was small, it was very agile, and Gu Rongqi's hand missed.

The two chased after the puppy, but Gu Rongqi, with his longer legs, ran ahead and grabbed it by the scruff of its neck, lifting it up.

Cheng Qicai ran over breathlessly, looked at the puppy in Gu Rongqi's arms, and angrily pointed at its nose and cursed: "Run away, you little brat, you don't appreciate kindness, you'll freeze to death tomorrow."

The caught puppy had lost its earlier ferocity; its tail was tucked between its hind legs, and it looked dejected and pitiful.

Gu Rongqi looked at her angry face, chuckled, and said, "It looks a lot like the dog in your profile picture."

Cheng Qicai looked closely and indeed it resembled "Cola," the dog she raised in the countryside, with a small section of white fur at the tip of its tail.

Her heart softened, and she stopped talking about it. But looking at its dirty, grayish fur, she remembered Gu Rongqi's obsessive-compulsive disorder. She said to Gu Rongqi, "Mr. Gu, give it to me."

Although Gu Rongqi thought it was dirty, he still picked it up. "No need, I'll take it first and find something to put it in."

Cheng Qicai looked around, but couldn't find anything to put it in.

Gu Rongqi said, "Open the trunk of the car and take a look."

Cheng Qicai obediently opened the trunk, where there was a gift bag.

Gu Rongqi looked at the gift bag and remembered that it was a gift someone had given him before. He told Cheng Qicai to use this gift bag.

Cheng Qicai took out the gift box from inside, opened the bag, and let Gu Rongqi put the dog inside.

The puppy struggled and resisted being put into the bag, twisting its body violently. Suddenly, a stream of yellow liquid sprayed everywhere like a showerhead falling to the ground.

Upon seeing this, Cheng Qicai reacted swiftly, taking a large step back, and Gu Rongqi immediately released his grip.

When Cheng Qicai saw the puppy fall to the ground, she instinctively bent down to catch it, and her forehead bumped into Gu Rongqi, who was also bending down and reaching out.

Ouch! Holy crap, it's so hard!

The pain made Cheng Qicai squat down and cover her head, which was buzzing like a bell being struck in an ancient temple.

Cheng Qicai rubbed her forehead and saw that Gu Rongqi opposite her was also rubbing his forehead with a restrained expression, which made her want to laugh.

What a terrible night they've had! So much bad luck!

She couldn't help but ask, "Mr. Gu, are you alright?"

Gu Rongqi shook his head. "It's nothing."

After a short while, Cheng Qicai found the puppy that had been urinating indiscriminately under the car again, and together with Gu Rongqi, they caught it again using the same method.

This time, Cheng Qicai forcefully stuffed it into the gift bag, not giving it a chance to struggle.

After it was all over, Cheng Qicai noticed a drop of yellow liquid on Gu Rongqi's right sleeve. Her voice was a little flustered, "Mr. Gu, your sleeve..."

Gu Rongqi's gaze followed to his sleeve, and upon seeing a yellow dot, his brows furrowed deeply.

Just as he was about to take off his coat, he saw Cheng Qicai wetting a tissue with mineral water. "President Gu, before it dries, dilute it with water and wash it off, then you won't be able to see it."

Gu Rongqi paused, hesitated for a moment, and then reached out his hand.

Cheng Qicai carefully pinched the edge of her sleeve with her hand, folded the tissue and pressed it onto the stain, waiting a few seconds.

Gu Rongqi looked at Cheng Qicai, who was focused on dealing with the situation, and felt a cool touch, unsure whether it was a tissue or her fingertips.

His lowered fingertips moved almost imperceptibly with each touch.

Cheng Qicai folded the fabric several times and pressed it on top. Soon the stain disappeared, leaving only a water stain. She then used a dry paper towel to absorb the moisture, and the sleeve was only slightly damp.

Cheng Qicai breathed a sigh of relief and looked up. "President Gu, it's done."

Gu Rongqi withdrew his somewhat stiff and numb hand, nodded, and said, "Thank you."

Cheng Qicai held the puppy in her arms. After being quiet for a few minutes at first, it gradually seemed to get used to Cheng Qicai's embrace and began to move restlessly in the bag.

Looking at the lively puppy, Cheng Qicai couldn't help but feel a little worried. If she were to keep it, she would have to put away all the decorative items in her house.

Those were things she had collected for a long time, and the thought of them being stored in a dark and gloomy box made her heart ache.

If they were to seek adoption, it would be difficult to find a home for a mixed-breed dog.

Thinking of this, she sighed sadly.

Although it was troublesome, she still didn't regret taking it with her.

At worst, we'll just have to reluctantly put those things away, after all this trouble!
