Chapter 88 Winter Plum

Cheng Qicai sat down on the bench and looked back. Gu Rongqi was still walking slowly towards her. The hem of his dark gray coat swayed slightly with each step. He had broad shoulders and a narrow waist, and he looked like a model who had just come off the runway.

Cheng Qicai looked around. Was there really no one who cared so much about their image?

Cheng Qicai looked down at herself, dressed in black, hands in her pockets, curled up, her legs trembling involuntarily.

Well, in Ms. Yun's words, he's like a good-for-nothing.

Gu Rongqi sat down next to her, neither too close nor too far, maintaining a normal social distance.

Cheng Qicai unconsciously stopped shaking her legs and turned slightly towards Gu Rongqi to ask, "It's been half an hour, and we still haven't received a call. Should we give them a call?"

Gu Rongdian nodded, took out his phone, and called Gu Liji again.

But his call was automatically disconnected after a busy signal.

Cheng Qicai frowned, wondering what Gu Liji was up to. He had given them an address and then disappeared, leaving them stranded in the cold wind.

Cheng Qicai felt that there was no hope for him, so she took out her phone and said to Gu Rongqi, "How about I call my sister and see if I can get through?"

Gu Rong nodded, "Okay."

Cheng Qicai opened the phone number and dialed it. The dial tone was very long. Just when Cheng Qicai was worried that she was in the same state of being out of contact as Gu Liji, Yun Suni answered the phone.

"Hello, Qicai." Yun Su Ni's voice came from the other end of the receiver, and apart from a slightly depressed mood, there was nothing unusual about it.

Cheng Qicai asked, "Sister, where are you now?"

"I'm at home."

This answer surprised Cheng Qicai. She then asked, "Was Brother Gu with you? I saw him chasing after you outside?"

After a moment of silence, Yun Suni answered the question, "He should have gone back."

Upon hearing Yun Su Ni's words, Cheng Qi replied with an "okay" and hung up the phone.

Since Yun Suni and Gu Liji weren't there anymore, there was no point in them staying. She turned to Gu Rongqi and asked, "Shall we go back too?"

Gu Rong nodded, "Mm."

If I had known they had gone back, I wouldn't have walked so far; now I have to walk back.

Luckily, I walked slowly and didn't go that far.

"Do you think something happened to Brother Gu?" Cheng Qicai asked after thinking for a while, feeling that Yun Su Ni's attitude in her answer just now was a bit off.

Logically speaking, since Lu Qi and Yun Suni are having a falling out, he shouldn't be the happiest person, so how could he leave so quickly?

And he hasn’t been answering the phone at all, which doesn’t make sense.

Unless something happened after the two of them chased after them.

"Don't worry, something must have happened between him and Miss Yun, that's why he's not answering his calls." Gu Rongqi glanced at Cheng Qicai and then comforted her calmly, "I'll go to his house to check on him when I get back later."

Hearing Gu Rongqi say that, Cheng Qicai felt much more at ease.

When they returned, they didn't take the same route they came by. Instead, they chose a side path that led to the main road outside, so they wouldn't have to brave the cold wind from the river.

The fallen leaves on the ground rustled underfoot in a tacit rhythm.

A biting cold wind blew in, carrying with it a fragrant aroma.

Cheng Qicai stopped and sniffed, noticing a few yellow shrubs not far to her left.

She excitedly called out to Gu Rongqi, "Gu Rongqi, there are winter plum blossoms over there!"

Before Gu Rongqi could react, Cheng Qicai had already dashed off towards the direction of Lamei.

When he walked up to her, Cheng Qicai had already bent down to pick up the fallen winter plum blossoms.

She picked up the flowers one by one and smelled them, keeping the ones that still had a fragrance and discarding the ones that didn't. She selected many.

Her palms were full of plum blossoms. She straightened up, turned her head and saw Gu Rongqi looking at her. She held the plum blossoms in her hand towards him.

He casually asked, "Gu Rongqi, do you want some? It smells pretty good."

Seeing Cheng Qicai quickly withdraw her hand, the rich fragrance of winter plum blossoms in the air made people feel a little stuffy.

Gu Rongqi extended his hand, palm facing her, "Okay, thank you."

Cheng Qicai's hand, which was reaching for the paper, froze.

No, you really want it? Are you doing this on purpose?

Cheng Qicai gave him a suspicious look, but his expression was no different from usual.

It's fair to say that most of the time, she couldn't figure out what Gu Rongqi was thinking.

Sometimes he might make you notice something amiss, but other times he might make you wonder if you're being overly sensitive.

For example, right now.

But what he wanted wasn't anything valuable; in fact, it was something he picked up from the ground.

Cheng Qicai paused for a moment, then poured half of the flower from her palm into his hand.

The flower was too light, so Cheng Qicai needed to be very close to his hand.

The soft, gentle petals landed in my palm, causing a barely perceptible tickle, which made the touch on my little finger feel even cooler.

Their hands were close together, looking like they were about to shake hands at any moment.

As Cheng Qicai was picking up the items, she realized something was wrong. She had thought she had picked up quite a lot, but now it seemed like she had picked up so little in Gu Rongqi's hands.

After she finished distributing them, she looked at the few flowers left in her hand and said to Gu Rongqi, "I'll pick up a few more later."

Cheng Qicai picked up several more from the ground, wrapped them in tissue paper, tied them with a rubber band, and then punched a few small holes in the paper.

She smelled it; the fragrance was rich, and she put it in her pocket with satisfaction.

"Let's go," she called out to Gu Rongqi as she turned around.

Seeing that his hand was still loosely holding the flowers, she took out the wrapped flowers and said, "You can wrap them in a tissue like I did, so you won't get your clothes dirty."

"Okay." Gu Rongqi took out a handkerchief from his pocket and wrapped it around the flower, carefully making sure not to crush it while wrapping. Finally, he tied a delicate bow.

Uh, this is so meticulous! Cheng Qicai touched the casually wrapped flower in her pocket.

It's true what they say, flowers can have different fates; the flower in her pocket is really suffering because of her.

Moreover, this handkerchief could probably buy a lot of winter plum blossoms! Cheng Qicai couldn't help but sigh.

No need, absolutely no need!

As they walked back, the fragrance lingered around them, and they couldn't pinpoint its source.

Cheng Qicai got out of the car, and Gu Rongqi drove home with a car full of fragrant flowers.

As soon as Gu Rongqi entered the room, Wang Ben could smell the unusual fragrance emanating from him.

Unlike the complex and layered scents of perfume, the straightforward fragrance of winter plum blossoms directly assaults the nasal cavity.

Wang Ben looked Gu Rongqi up and down with a puzzled expression, but didn't see anything related to winter plum blossoms.

It wasn't until Gu Rongqi took off his coat and handed it to him that he saw him take something out of his pocket—something wrapped in a handkerchief?

Before he could voice his doubts, he saw Gu Rongqi take it upstairs.

The bow on the flower bag on the table was still tied, and its fragrance slowly filled the room.

The words on the book in my hand became blurred, and in a daze, I seemed to return to the foot of that wintersweet tree, where the rich fragrance was intoxicating.

He slowly closed his eyes, his deep, slow breathing filling the room.
