Qin Xiao picked up the still-warm coconut latte and gently tapped it against the cup in Qing Sheng Daoist's hand, the cups making a crisp sound as they collided.
"OK."
His voice was calm, yet carried an undeniable decisiveness.
"I'll take this job."
Meanwhile, the atmosphere was completely different at the other end of the banquet hall.
Ye Chen was practically forced into a garish bright red wedding dress by several quick-witted servants from the Liu family.
The fabric was exquisite, with gold thread trim, but it looked somewhat comical and hastily worn on him.
His brows were furrowed, and his face showed obvious impatience and a hint of offended anger.
"What kind of rules does your Liu family have?"
"Is marriage such a trivial matter? They didn't even give us time to prepare?"
He felt a slight unease, but it was quickly dispelled by the upcoming wedding night.
This must be because the Liu family is eager to arrange a marriage between him and this chosen one.
A figure covered with a heavy red veil, looking somewhat thin and even trembling slightly, was led to him by two matchmakers.
The surrounding music and instruments rose rapidly, carrying an eerie sense of celebration.
Old Madam Liu smiled broadly, but her voice carried a barely perceptible tension.
"The auspicious time has arrived! The auspicious time has arrived! Quickly, the newlyweds, perform the wedding ceremony!"
Ye Chen's inner turmoil grew stronger; the speed was so fast it was as if they were rushing to be reborn.
But then he thought again, the Liu family must be so eager because they have their eyes on his status as the chosen one and can't wait to send this stunning beauty into his arms.
Thinking of this, his doubts were suppressed by his arrogance, and a cold smile of certainty curled at the corner of his mouth.
He glanced at the guests around him, some shocked, some envious, and felt a surge of pride.
How could Qin Xiao, that frail scholar, compare to him?
Miss Liu ultimately chose the true strongman.
The hasty and quick wedding ceremony ended without even giving the guests time to react. Ye Chen and the bride with the red veil were surrounded and almost pushed into the bridal chamber in the backyard.
"This...this is way too fast!"
Some people in the crowd were whispering among themselves.
Behind a secluded artificial hill outside the bridal chamber, Qin Xiao and Daoist Qing Sheng appeared like two ghosts merging into the shadows.
Master Qingsheng rummaged around in the wide sleeves of his faded purple Taoist robe for a while before pulling out a rather shabby-looking peach wood short sword and handing it to Qin Xiao.
The hilt was smooth, but the tassel... was actually a colorful tuft of fluff from a cat toy.
Qin Xiao's eye twitched slightly, and he silently accepted the strangely styled "magical artifact".
"The equipment is a bit rudimentary, but it'll do."
Master Qingsheng chuckled and lowered his voice.
"Wait for my command and watch for the right moment."
The two held their breath, their gazes fixed on the brightly lit bridal chamber not far away, which exuded an indescribable eeriness.
Bright red paper-cut "double happiness" characters were pasted on the window frame. The flickering red candlelight shone through the window paper, distorting and elongating the shadows of the people inside the room, making them appear somewhat indistinct and creating a frighteningly oppressive atmosphere.
Suddenly, with a soft "snap," all the red candles in the bridal chamber went out instantly.
There was dead silence.
Immediately afterwards, a piercing scream filled with terror and disbelief tore through the night sky; it was Ye Chen's voice.
"ah!!"
"You are not Liu Qingyou!!"
"Who are you?! Get out of my way!!"
The screams stopped abruptly, replaced by the sounds of a fierce and chaotic fight.
The sounds of furniture shattering, heavy objects hitting walls, and suppressed roars from men mingled together with some inhuman, chilling screams.
The roar was sharp and piercing, carrying a chilling cold that penetrated to the bone.
Ye Chen's roar was mixed with the crisp sound of weapons being parried and the muffled groans of flesh being torn apart.
This was not the tranquil haven he had envisioned, but rather a battlefield rife with deadly dangers.
His martial arts skills, which he was so proud of, were completely suppressed in the face of this strange opponent.
"Bang—!"
With a loud crash, the wooden door of the bridal chamber was smashed open from the inside by a tremendous force, sending wood chips flying everywhere!
A disheveled figure was thrown out like a broken sack and crashed heavily onto the bluestone slab in the courtyard. It was Ye Chen, his clothes in disarray and blood trickling from the corner of his mouth.
He struggled to his feet, his face now devoid of any of his previous smugness and arrogance, replaced only by shock and boundless rage.
He suddenly turned his head, his eyes bloodshot, staring intently at Old Madam Liu, who stood trembling at the entrance of the hospital, and roared hoarsely.
"Old man!!"
"You dared to betray me!!"
"That bitch Liu Qingyou isn't inside at all!!"
The old lady Liu staggered from his shout, her face drained of color, her lips trembled, and she was filled with shame and helplessness.
"Young Master Ye...this old woman...this old woman had no choice..."
Before she could finish speaking, a figure exuding an aura so intense it was nauseating slowly emerged from the broken door frame.
The figure belonged to the bride who had been wearing a veil earlier—Liu Qingrong.
Her figure appeared particularly distorted in the darkness of the night. Although her originally beautiful outline could still be vaguely discerned, her entire body was now shrouded in a visible black aura of malevolence.
The malevolent energy writhed like a living thing, exuding an aura of decay and death.
What's even more terrifying is her face.
The face seemed to be distorted by an invisible force, its skin turning a deathly gray color, covered with hideous marks as if burned by sulfuric acid, blending into the churning black mist, exuding a chilling and venomous aura.
