Night had fallen, and a thick fog blanketed the mountains, as if the entire world had been swallowed up in endless darkness and the unknown.
The fog drifted like a ghost, shifting unpredictably in the cold wind, blurring the once clear outline of the mountain ridge into a chaotic mess.
Amidst the thick fog, a few faint rays of light flickered like candles in the wind, seemingly on the verge of being swallowed by darkness and chaos.
In the tent camp, several dark figures, carrying flashlights, moved about, circled the area, and then met and stood in front of the camp.
In a glance, they realized that their respective inspections were basically the same, and everything was as usual.
After confirming that everything was in order, they stood in neat rows, waiting for the next shift of guards.
The temperature in the mountains at night was frighteningly low. Even though they were wearing thick winter clothes, they couldn't stop shivering and felt icy cold all over.
They couldn't help but move their hands and feet slowly, while keeping their eyes alertly scanning their surroundings.
They were the elite selected from various organizations, possessing exceptional qualities. Even though everything around them seemed unpredictable, they dared not relax in the slightest.
Time passed silently, the temperature grew colder and colder, and the fog grew thicker. As it was time for their shift change, the few people who had been tense and gritting their teeth to persevere couldn't help but relax a little.
The next moment, a whooshing sound rang out out of nowhere. The group subconsciously looked up and a hard, huge tail lashed out at their abdomens.
Blood gushed from his mouth instantly, and his body shot backward. A giant maw suddenly emerged from the thick fog and swallowed him whole, its blade-like teeth snapping shut with a tearing sound.
Before the elite soldiers could even utter a sound, everything vanished into the thick fog.
A moment later, faint footsteps sounded, and several more blurry figures emerged from the camp, coming to take over from the previous group of people who stayed behind.
They made their way smoothly to the outskirts of the camp. "Wait!"
The person at the front suddenly stopped, his brows furrowing slightly and his nose twitching gently.
"Can you... smell anything?"
They emerged from the inner perimeter of the camp without incident, but upon reaching this point, he suddenly sensed an extremely subtle, unusual aura in the air.
It smells like...blood.
Upon hearing this, his companions behind him immediately focused their attention and looked around, their noses twitching incessantly.
After a long silence, they frowned slightly and stammered out:
"It seems... I don't smell anything strange."
"Did you smell something wrong?"
The man at the front frowned; he could no longer smell the strange odor.
The flavor was so subtle that it seemed to dissipate with a gust of wind.
"The mountains are full of miasma and never see the sun all year round, so it's not surprising that there are some strange smells."
"Yes, let's go and hand over to the previous team first, so they don't have to wait."
The others offered a few words of advice.
As he spoke, he was about to take a step forward.
"Wait a moment!"
The person at the front spoke again, raising his hand to stop the others.
His sharp eyes were fixed ahead, and his intuition, honed over years of fighting on the front lines, told him something was wrong.
An inexplicable sense of vigilance lingered, growing stronger with each passing moment.
His eyes flickered slightly, and before his companion could ask, he suddenly spoke up into the thick fog ahead:
"Hey buddy up ahead, can't see the road? Give me a shout."
The sound echoed in the thick fog, like a stone sinking into the sea, without causing the slightest ripple.
Everyone's pupils contracted instantly, their muscles tensed involuntarily, and a sharp glint appeared in their eyes as they stared intently ahead.
Although visibility was extremely low due to the thick fog, and they couldn't see what was ahead, the location was only ten steps away from the outermost edge of the camp. If the sound could be heard, there was no reason why the people left behind wouldn't hear it.
They had focused all their attention on listening to the sounds around them, but there wasn't a single sound.
Their task was to stay behind, not to stand at attention. In such low temperatures, even rubbing their hands together would have made a difference.
This is completely illogical.
"Brother, if you're online, just say something, even a stomp of your foot will do..."
There was still not a single response.
With a slight shift of their feet, the group silently formed a circle back to back, quietly raising their guns and staring intently at their surroundings.
They clearly sensed that something was wrong, and even subconsciously felt that there were no living people around them.
As their breaths twitched slightly, everyone's pupils contracted instantly. At that moment, they all smelled a strange odor—the smell of blood.
As their sharp eyes tried to pierce through the thick fog to find the source of the anomaly, the stench of blood grew stronger.
Without warning, a gigantic maw emerged from the mist and lunged at the group of people standing in a circle.
"retreat!"
The person facing the giant mouth let out a roar, and the figures of the others retreated simultaneously.
The next second, another giant mouth emerged from behind them, swallowing several people whole. The two who managed to escape only heard a few screams before the giant mouth disappeared into the thick fog.
The next second, deafening gunshots rang out continuously above the camp.
In the tent at the very center of the camp, Chu Liyue's closed eyes snapped open, her gaze filled with endless sharpness and vigilance.
Xiao Wujie, who was fast asleep with his head on her arm, couldn't help but let out a muffled groan and frowned as he snuggled closer to her.
Covering his exposed ear, Chu Liyue immediately sat up, hugging his waist. "Don't be afraid, I'm here."
The continuous gunshots rang in his ears, bringing Xiao Wujie back to some consciousness from his agonizing ordeal. He involuntarily lifted his head from Chu Liyue's embrace, his eyes trembling slightly, his voice hoarse:
