When Yunmo and I left the supermarket that evening and got back into the car, the sky outside was already covered with dark clouds, and there was a faint rumble of thunder.
A storm is coming.
In the car parked by the roadside, Yunmo rolled over and sat on Chuwan's lap.
He was small and thin; the distance between Chu Wan and the steering wheel was just enough to fit him.
He knelt on Chu Wan with his legs apart. Although the sky outside was overcast, his mood was not as gloomy as the sky.
His face flushed slightly, and he wrapped his arms around Chu Wan's neck, pressing his lips to her soft lips.
Then, her ears turning red, she leaned close to Chu Wan's ear and whispered shyly, "Thank you, Sister Wan."
Springtime, the season of renewal, and he had a lot of fun today.
The release of his emotions seemed to have planted a seed of hope in his heart; perhaps everything will slowly get better.
Chu Wan hugged and kissed him for a while, then Yun Mo blushed and retreated to the passenger seat.
Looking out the car window at the gloomy sky, he suddenly thought of Chu Liyue, who chose to work overtime at the company on her day off.
He quickly sent her a message reminding her that if she was going back to the manor, she should return as soon as possible, as the upcoming thunderstorms would affect her travel.
After sending the message, Chu Wan drove him back to the manor.
When Chu Liyue received Yun Mo's message, she was engrossed in a mountain of work.
In fact, she could have skipped many of the tasks, but by burying herself in her work, she could forget many things, so she kept her schedule very full every day.
She gently rubbed her temples, looked out at the gloomy sky, and felt inexplicably irritable.
She took a slender women's cigarette from the pack beside her, lit it, and as the smoke swirled around her, she gazed silently at the people coming and going below, their steps hurried.
It's getting dark, it's raining, time to go home.
After smoking several cigarettes in a row, she stubbed them out in frustration.
In the months since Xiao Wujie's lesions relapsed, her smoking addiction has become stronger and stronger. Whenever she has free time, she can't help but want to smoke.
She stared at the message Yunmo sent her for a while, then silently turned off her phone screen.
She didn't want to go back so early.
When she goes back, she only stays with him for a while, then sits in the living room or on the balcony smoking.
...
As night fell, the sky, thick with dark clouds, seemed to have been dyed black with ink.
The air was thick with a damp, heavy scent that made it feel suffocating.
Soon, a bolt of lightning ripped across the sky.
Immediately afterwards, a storm descended, with howling winds and torrential rain.
The rain blurred all outlines, making distant scenes appear indistinct and adding to the unsettling atmosphere.
Amidst the deafening thunder, a bolt of lightning, powerful enough to cleave the sky, struck the brightly lit manor with a deafening roar.
The next second, the entire manor was plunged into darkness.
In the darkness, a well-trained servant turned on a flashlight.
Footsteps echoed down the stairs as Yunmo and Chuwan walked down hand in hand.
Upon seeing the two of them come down, the head servant hurriedly explained respectfully, "Young Master Yunmo, Miss Chuwan, it's possible that the manor's electrical circuits were damaged by a lightning strike."
"I'll organize people to inspect and repair it right away."
Yunmo nodded. The manor had its own power generation system with a tangled web of wires. There weren't many servants, so after a moment's hesitation, he and Chuwan went with the servants to check the electrical circuits.
Finding the problematic route among so many routes in such a large estate is a very time-consuming and laborious task.
For nearly an hour, the main house remained completely empty.
It took them more than an hour to find the problem line, but because it was dark and there was a storm, it was not suitable for repairs. After discussing it, everyone agreed to repair it the next day.
After returning to the main house, Yunmo held a flashlight in his mouth, filled a basin with hot water, grabbed a clean towel, and headed towards the underground laboratory.
He was going to help Xiao Wujie with the evening cleaning. When Chu Liyue was around, she would do it, but occasionally when Chu Liyue came back late, he would do it.
The power outage caused by the circuit failure also affected the underground laboratory. Fortunately, the laboratory doors and important instruments were powered by independent batteries to cope with such situations.
Yunmo carried the basin into the laboratory at the end of the room. As he approached the bed, the basin slipped from his hand and crashed to the ground with a thud.
The warm water splashed onto him, but he felt an icy chill to the bone.
The flashlight beam swept around the entire laboratory, which was completely empty.
With trembling hands and feet, Yunmo pulled out his phone and dialed a number:
"Teacher...Teacher's wife, Teacher...Teacher is gone."
*
On a stormy night, a black sports car roared like an angry dragon, splashing water as it sped into the manor.
The journey, which should have taken twenty minutes, was completed in just over five minutes by Chu Liyue, who practically went crazy.
Her sharp, almost terrifying aura made all the servants in the manor afraid to raise their heads; they were all silent and trembling with fear.
In the laboratory, Chu Wan sat beside Yun Mo, whose eyes were trembling, her face tense.
In five minutes, she and Yunmo searched almost every corner of the underground laboratory, but there was no sign of Xiao Wujie.
Because of the power outage, the surveillance footage from the underground laboratory, which has its own power supply, was completely black, and nothing could be seen.
Chu Liyue stared at the empty bed, her eyes turning crimson.
No one knows how she felt when she received Yunmo's call; her blood seemed to freeze, her body was ice-cold, and her internal organs felt chilled.
She had already lost him once, and the price was that she endured two years like a walking corpse, every minute and every second without him was torture.
