Sit under the pine eaves in the evening and sleep in the bamboo pavilion at night.
When you feel empty and empty, you should take medicine; when you feel alone, you should return to the mountains.
Cleverness cannot defeat clumsiness, and busyness cannot defeat leisure.
There is no need to practice Taoism separately, this is the threshold.
Liuyi Spring is located in the south of Gushan Mountain and is also known as Zhuge.
In the sixth year of Yuanyou reign of Emperor Zhezong of Song Dynasty, Su Dongpo and Master Huiqin mourned Ouyang Xiu together here.
Xu Yan accompanied Qian Dehong all the way and was deeply moved when he saw the "Six-One Spring Inscription" written by Su Shi.
"Climbing Solitary Mountain and gazing at Wu and Yue, singing the music of the mountains and drinking this water, the lingering spirit of the Duke may be seen in this spring."
Qian Dehong put his hands behind his back, pointed at the bamboo in front of him, and said, "My dear disciple, Master Yangming once studied bamboo and gained his inner wisdom. Don't you have any ideas?"
Xu Yan smiled bitterly and said, "How can a student compare with Mr. Yangming?"
"When Mr. Yangming was exiled to Longchang, the environment was very harsh. He often asked himself a question: what would a saint do in his situation?"
Xu Yan pondered for a moment and said, "This is a bit difficult. Mencius was a nobleman, and Confucius, not to mention, traveled around the world and recruited countless disciples. It seems that no one was as unlucky as Mr. Yangming."
"A saint simply adapts to his circumstances."
Qian Dehong nodded without hesitation.
"It was precisely because of this realization that Mr. Yangming came up with the philosophy of mind."
Xu Yan felt that what Mr. Qian said made a lot of sense. Since he had finally got the chance to discuss psychology, he naturally did not want to let it go.
"May I ask what my dear teacher, Mr. Yangming, thinks of the teachings of Zhu Xi and Lu Xun?"
"Zhu Xi attained the principles of Heaven through the classics and then put them into practice. Lu Jiuyuan attained the principles of Heaven through meditation and then put them into practice. Both believed that there was a sequence between knowledge and action. But Master Yangming believed that knowledge and action were one. This is the biggest difference."
Qian Dehong explained in a gentle voice.
"Didn't Mr. Yangming also advocate meditation?"
Xu Yan asked.
"That's completely different. Lu Jiuyuan advocated meditation because he hoped to gain truth from within. But Yangming advocated meditation because people are restless and agitated. He simply hoped that people could calm down through this method. So the mind-principle relationship between Yangming and Lu Jiuyuan is completely different."
After a brief pause, Qian Dehong continued, "Lu Jiuyuan advocated self-cultivation, while Zhu Xi emphasized learning. Arguing over the pros and cons of Zhu and Lu is a waste of time. Mr. Yangming neither denied Zhu Xi's teachings nor harbored hostility toward Mr. Lu Xiangshan's philosophy of mind. Mr. Yangming believed that the similarities and differences between Zhu and Lu should be viewed impartially."
Xu Yan seemed to understand something.
“So, what’s the fastest way to learn Yangming’s philosophy of mind?”
“First, set your goals.”
Qian Dehong talked freely.
"A student who does not want to be a saint is not a good student. If you want to learn the heart thoroughly, you must be determined to become a saint."
"Second, study diligently. Didn't your teacher tell you that the path to the mountain of knowledge is through diligence, and the boundless sea of learning requires hard work. Only diligent study can improve one's character."
"Third, correct your mistakes. There is no greater virtue than to recognize your mistakes and correct them."
"Fourth, encourage good deeds. Friends should often encourage good deeds through rebuke."
Xu Yan nodded.
“The students understand.”
"My dear disciple, you are still a long way from enlightenment."
Qian Dehong said with a half-smile: "But it doesn't matter. You are still young and have plenty of time."
...
...
After returning to Gushan Academy, Xu Yan began to study hard again.
But not long after, Mr. Qian, who was unwilling to be lonely, came over and insisted on giving Xu Yan a question.
The question he asked was very simple, consisting of only four words: The young are to be feared.
The title alone seems to be praising the greatness of the later generations, but that is not the case.
The title comes from the Analects of Confucius, Zihan: "The younger generation is to be feared; how can one know whether those who come after him will be inferior to those now? If one is still unknown at forty or fifty, then he is not to be feared."
The literal meaning of this question is so simple that Xu Yan even wondered why Mr. Qian asked such a question.
Could it be a beating to him?
Seeing Xu Yan's skeptical expression, Qian Dehong explained, "Young people are capable of accumulating knowledge and becoming virtuous, which is truly formidable. That's why Confucius expected them to achieve success. How can we know that people with both virtue and talent in the future won't be as good as me today? At forty or fifty, I'm still unknown. That's why Confucius warned me against achieving nothing. From being feared in youth, to being feared in old age, how sad."
really!
Xu Yan knew that Mr. Qian was about to start preaching.
What a headache!
Wasn’t this argument for encouraging learning already said once at Liuyiquan? Why is it being brought up again in a new form?
But Xu Yan couldn't refuse to listen.
After all, Mr. Qian was his mentor.
Since you can't refuse, you can only enjoy it.
Xu Yan wanted to take this opportunity to discuss the solution with Mr. Qian, so he asked, "Master, how do you solve this kind of problem?"
Qian Dehong became interested when he saw Xu Yan's humble attitude towards learning.
"A gentleman cherishes every moment, persisting for years or even decades. With true accumulation of effort, he will surely achieve something."
Qian Dehong paused, then continued, "Sages expect young people to achieve success and warn them of failure."
Xu Yan tasted it and exclaimed in admiration, "This is an excellent solution."
This is not Xu Yan's flattery, it is really Qian Dehong's clever way of breaking it.
Most people see this topic and start from one point, but few can present their arguments as dialectically as Mr. Qian.
For young people, success or failure is just a matter of thought.
As for what exactly happens, we will have to look at the analysis below.
Before you know it, Mr. Qian has set a trap to lure you into reading on.
"Come on. Today we'll just talk about the opening chapter."
Mr. Qian seemed to be intrigued and continued to ask questions: "A gentleman's ambition is not to be achieved."
My dear, there is more to this chapter. Please click on the next page to continue reading. It will be even more exciting later!
