"Why?" Su Miaomiao turned her head and asked.
Lu Xiuyuan pursed his thin lips tightly, and the emotions in his eyes grew colder and colder.
Just when Su Miaomiao thought he would not answer, he slowly squeezed out two words from his throat.
"Not worthy."
"What?" Su Miaomiao didn't quite understand.
"Because I don't deserve it." Lu Xiuyuan repeated it again, his voice very hoarse.
Su Miaomiao looked at him like this, and for some reason, she suddenly thought of something.
"Did they die because of... revenge?" Su Miaomiao asked tentatively.
Lu Xiuyuan suddenly looked up and stared at Su Miaomiao with intent eyes.
"Don't look at me like that. I'm just making a reasonable guess. Besides, my identity has already been investigated by the organization." Su Miaomiao looked frank, not afraid of being mistaken for an enemy spy.
Lu Xiuyuan sighed slightly: "Actually, this matter has something to do with you."
"Does it have anything to do with me?" Su Miaomiao looked surprised.
"Do you remember the first time you saved me?" Lu Xiuyuan asked.
"Yeah." Su Miaomiao nodded.
"I was carrying out a secret mission. After handing the envelope to you, I thought about leading those people farther away. Later, I ran out of energy and fell off the cliff. When I woke up, I found that I was rescued by a villager." Lu Xiuyuan's voice was extremely low, and his eyes were full of regret.
"The person who saved you is from this village?" Su Miaomiao reacted quickly.
Lu Xiuyuan nodded.
"I left immediately after I came to my senses, and even destroyed all traces of my existence, and told that family not to tell anyone about my affairs. But I don't know why, those people still found out about this place, and even did something like... massacring the whole village." Lu Xiuyuan said the last part, and subconsciously clenched his fists.
The wound that had just been treated was now bleeding again.
Su Miaomiao immediately patted the back of his hand: "Don't waste my medicine, it's very expensive."
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean it," Lu Xiuyuan apologized quickly and slowly let go of his hand.
Su Miaomiao glanced at him and connected all the things together.
"Do you think you're the one who harmed these people, so you want to punish yourself in this way?" Su Miaomiao glanced at his hands.
"I don't know what else I can do..." Lu Xiuyuan's voice was very hoarse.
"There is still a lot you can do. Help them rebuild their homes, find the murderers behind the scenes, and make them pay a price hundreds of times more cruel than this!" Su Miaomiao spoke word by word.
Lu Xiuyuan slowly raised his head.
“People should never be trapped in the past. What’s more, you were unconscious at the time and couldn’t refuse to be taken home by the villagers. You also tried your best to erase all traces of yourself. You have done the best you could. The rest should not be borne by you.” Su Miaomiao had experienced many such coincidences before.
All I can say is that fate plays tricks on us.
"Everyone told me so, but when I saw those bodies being dug out one by one, many of them without even a complete body, I couldn't get over it." This was the first time Lu Xiuyuan revealed to others what he felt after learning about this matter.
Perhaps it was because he had experienced several life and death experiences with Su Miaomiao, so he always felt particularly safe around her.
"Then don't cross it." Su Miaomiao spoke word by word.
Lu Xiuyuan was slightly stunned.
Su Miaomiao smiled at him: "People always think that all obstacles must be overcome before they can be considered as the past, but who says that standing over them is not another kind of past? You can engrave this incident in your heart, as a warning, or just as a memorial."
