Chapter Forty-Five
You Congxi stared blankly at the familiar yet unfamiliar ceiling.
It feels quite familiar, after all, it's the ceiling I've been staring at for over a year.
but……
You Congxi stared intently at the old stain on the ceiling, feeling like a deflated balloon, just a dry, wrinkled shell.
Last night...
She closed her eyes tightly.
Her mind was racing with thoughts of her past, and all You Congxi wanted to do was ride in Cinderella's carriage and smash that idiot who had made Chen Yue cry so much yesterday that his clothes were soaked with sweat with a high heel.
She couldn't remember how she got back to her bed last night and fell into a deep sleep, but even a fool could figure out that she couldn't have run back from ten kilometers away by herself.
That can only be...
You Congxi grabbed the pillow next to him and smothered his face with it.
A few seconds later.
A fist slammed onto the bed, shaking the pillow high into the air, accompanied by a low growl of a wild beast.
Knock knock.
Before You Congxi could switch back to human form, the door was half open.
Shen Yue watched as the girl instantly lay back in bed, pretending to be a peaceful old lady sleeping. He was slightly taken aback, then raised an eyebrow after realizing what was happening.
"I've come in?"
He greeted her, but the old lady on the bed was still fast asleep. However, if you looked closely, you could see that her long, curled eyelashes trembled slightly.
You Congxi held his breath and concentrated, his hands clenched into fists under the covers, his ears perked up like antennas, trying his best to catch the intruder's movements.
...How rude!
Can you just walk into a girl's room?
She gritted her teeth inwardly, and then heard a soft laugh coming from somewhere in the room.
You Congxi froze from head to toe in an instant.
The footsteps grew louder as they approached, sounding like a death knell to her ears. She closed her eyes tightly, praying that Shen Yue was just bored and would turn around and leave in the next second.
The room was only drawn with a thin gauze curtain. It was already bright daylight, and the warm sunlight shone through the curtain, falling directly on the bed.
The windows were closed, and the room was eerily quiet.
You Congxi's palms, hidden under the blanket, were covered in a layer of cold sweat.
An ominous premonition suddenly welled up in my heart.
All I could hear was my own increasingly heavy breathing, and the sound of footsteps that had just been echoing...
Suddenly, everything went dark.
A shadow fell overhead, blocking some of the sunlight coming in through the window.
You Congxi's heart skipped a beat.
The shadowy figure moved.
The next second.
A gentle breeze drifted into the room, ruffling the girl's bangs and revealing the fever-reducing patch hidden underneath.
A crack was opened in the sealed room, and the chirping of birds and the screams of children playing outside drifted in, breaking the almost frozen atmosphere.
After opening the window, Shen Yue pulled back the gauze curtains, neatly tied them, then turned around, walked back to the bedside, and looked amusedly at the girl who was still struggling in her death throes. He cleared his throat and announced loudly:
"Whoever pretends to be asleep is a puppy."
The girl on the bed remained motionless.
Shen Yue stared at the girl's sleeping face and counted down in his mind.
three.
two.
one……
"Who gave you permission to enter my room?" You Congxi sat up and looked at him coldly.
Shen Yue suppressed a laugh and pointed to the yellow teddy bear on her bedside table: "My son opened the door for me."
You Congxi subconsciously looked down, but before he could get angry, he was frozen in place by a sudden touch on his forehead.
"The fever's gone down." Shen Yue casually tore off the fever patch, folded it in half, and held it in his hand. "Does your head still hurt?"
You Congxi looked at the fever-reducing patch in his hand without saying anything.
When did she develop a fever?
As if sensing her confusion, Shen Yue handed her a glass of warm water from the bedside table and said, "When I brought you back last night, you were delirious with fever. Your head was steaming like a boiling kettle, and your temperature kept going up and down. I almost called 120 to have both of us taken away."
Seeing You Congxi holding her cup without saying a word, Shen Yue guessed that she must be feeling uncomfortable in front of him, given her thin skin. So he stopped talking, said "Breakfast is on the table," and walked out.
The half-open door was quietly closed again. You Congxi hadn't thought anything of it before, but now, holding the cup, she felt her mouth was dry and her throat was itchy. She tilted her head back and drank the whole cup of water.
After putting down the cup and wiping her mouth, she lay back down on the pillow and continued to stare blankly at the old stain on the ceiling.
Several fragments vaguely surfaced in her mind. She remained silent for a long time before letting out a soft sigh.
Last night, Shen Yue stayed by her bedside just like he had just done. The difference was that he moved a chair and sat there. Even though he was so sleepy that he could barely keep his eyes open and almost fell off the chair several times, he still stayed by her bedside until dawn, feeding her medicine and applying towels to her head until she finally stopped whimpering and complaining of a headache.
She had no recollection of what happened after that, as she was fast asleep.
When I opened my eyes again, all I saw was this ceiling.
What kind of nonsense is this?
You Congxi believed that her escapist policy had completely failed, and continuing would only cause her more trouble, including everything that happened last night that made her lose face, such as crying two holes in Shen Yue's clothes.
...None of that matters anymore.
She counted the patterns on the ceiling and felt that her skin was already one-tenth as thick as Chen Yue's, which was obviously a considerable thickness.
After contemplating life for a while, she sighed deeply and simply got up to wash up.
Walking to the dining table, You Congxi looked at the abundant breakfast options and her first thought was whether Shen Yue had eaten.
I stayed up so late yesterday, and then went to the morning market to buy her breakfast this morning...
Sizzle.
She pulled out a chair, sat down, and expressionlessly picked up a piece of custard bun and stuffed it into her mouth.
She raised her hand to touch her forehead, wondering if her fever hadn't subsided. Shen Yue is a grown man; wouldn't he know to find something to eat if he's hungry? Wouldn't he buy himself some breakfast when he goes to buy breakfast too?
She felt she must be delirious from the fever.
She picked up her phone and decided to distract herself.
There are several unread messages.
The Chinese language group's work, Qu Qi's work, and Jing Ling's work.
There is no You Yuanming.
You Congxi paused for a moment, then opened Jing Ling's chat box.
[Mom: Something came up last night, what's wrong, honey?]
You Congxi twitched his finger.
[I am a fish: No, just making a random call.]
She then clicked on Qu Qi's.
10:08 PM.
[Did Shen Yue come to see you?]
10:13.
When did Shen Yue become your neighbor?! You Xiaoyu, you even kept this from me?!
10:27.
【I give up. You Congxi, you're finished. Everyone in the group knows you two are having an affair except me. I'm ashamed of my title as the social butterfly of No. 1 High School...】
You Congxi's fingers, which were swiping across the screen, froze.
What does that mean?
Everyone in the group.
Everyone knows...
She immediately opened the 99+ unread messages in the Chinese language group, scrolled to the top, and then read them in silence.
[When I'm sleepy, I drink Jia Duo Bao: I thought it was an unspoken secret]
[Rat Poison Cookies: ...Get out.]
[Rat Poison Cookies: @. Xuanbao, you didn't know about this too, did you?]
[Drink Jia Duo Bao when you're sleepy: Yin Zixuan has no idea that she's busy fooling around with Liang Jing and has long since drifted apart from us.]
[Biscuit: He Qizheng, do you want to die?]
【. :Know. 】
[JDB: Hehe.]
[Biscuit: He Qizheng, you wait for me, I'll be at school on Monday]
[Note: Shen Yue likes small fish.]
[Biscuit: ...How come I didn't know that?]
[JDB: Because you're stupid, you can't even see something so obvious]
You Congxi was too lazy to read the idle chatter and banter that followed; the earlier parts had already dampened her spirits. So she simply scrolled to the very bottom to see what conclusion these three blabbermouths had reached.
You Congxi stared at the line of words for a long time, unable to speak.
She turned off her phone, threw it to the farthest place from her, raised her hand to cover her face, and remained motionless for a long time, whether out of anger or embarrassment, it was hard to tell.
The culprit, Shen Daiyu, was fast asleep with the curtains drawn.
I didn't dare close my eyes at all yesterday, and today I thought I'd just take a nap, but I lost consciousness as soon as I closed my eyes.
He was holding his phone, clearly having fainted while looking at it.
He had a dream in which he saw You Congxi crying like a faucet had come to life last night.
You Congxi cried silently without making a sound, just shedding tears quietly.
He was at a loss, not knowing what to do. His heart ached from her crying, and all he could do was hold her tighter and tighter.
He didn't know how much time had passed, but he felt that the fabric on his shoulder was so transparent that he could feel the touch of You Congxi's cheek. The girl finally stopped crying and mumbled something.
He didn't hear clearly and asked again.
The girl stared at him for two seconds, then switched to her other dry shoulder, and buried her face in his neck again, repeating it softly.
He had been crying for so long that his voice was terribly hoarse, but this time Shen Yue heard him clearly.
She said, "Happy birthday."
The phone in his hand vibrated, and Shen Yue turned over, lying on the bed with the phone screen lit up.
An unread WeChat message from "I am a fish".
If Shen Yue wakes up and unlocks the chat at this time, the chat interface will remain in the Chinese Language Group chat interface.
The last message remained with Shen Yue himself.
Quoting reply: "Shen Yue likes small fish."
[Dai Y: Yeah, I like it.]
