Chapter Forty-Seven
Yu Junya was carrying two bags, clearly having just come out of the mall.
She was somewhat surprised, and then felt a little embarrassed after You Congxi replied. After all, they had a big argument last night, and the words had gone to such lengths... But she hadn't lived her nearly forty years of life in vain. Even though some things had been exposed, she could still pretend not to see them. If she didn't see them, it was as if nothing had happened.
So she smiled, said "Hey," and took a few steps closer: "Have you eaten? It's so cold outside, why aren't you wearing more clothes?"
As soon as she said it, she felt it was inappropriate. After all, this wasn't her biological child. Even adults would get impatient with their own children at this age if they were too involved, let alone someone who wasn't their own.
But perhaps because he also has a ten-year-old daughter who is a handful and nagging at home, when he sees You Congxi, with whom he has spent a few years on and off, he may feel a little empathy for this girl who is not loved by her father and whose mother is not around.
She thought of Youyou, her only precious daughter whom she cherished and protected. At only ten years old, she had to live in such a family. No matter how much she tried to hide it, it was still different from other normal families of three.
Whenever Youyou asks her why her older sister isn't her biological daughter, why her sister calls her "auntie," or what her classmates say, she feels a helpless anger.
It was her fault for letting her daughter be born into this family. You Yuanming seemed gentle and family-oriented, but he was actually a bully at home and irresponsible. She misjudged him back then.
She clearly understood that while You Congxi might be wronged, her daughter was the most innocent! So no matter what, she had to fight for her daughter's interests. Just because You Congxi's mother didn't care about the child and You Congxi's father didn't care about the child didn't mean she could ignore or disregard her own daughter!
If there's anyone to blame for You Congxi, it's only her parents for being irresponsible. In the end, all she wanted was for her daughter to have a better life. You Yuanming's fatherly love was limited; if You Congxi received more, Youyou would receive less. And if You Congxi received more of the inheritance, Youyou would receive less.
You Congxi's biological parents were incompetent, but You Youyi's mother was competent.
"Yes, I've already eaten," You Congxi replied. "Did you come alone?"
Yu Junya smiled somewhat awkwardly: "The winter clothes I bought for Youyou a few days ago are a bit too small. I took advantage of Yuanming taking her to her dance class to exchange them for a different size at the mall, and I also picked out some other clothes for her."
"Mm." You Congxi nodded.
The scene fell silent for a moment before Yu Junya noticed the boy next to You Congxi. His striking good looks were almost dazzling. He was tall and wore a gray pullover hoodie, which made him look even more refreshing and handsome.
She hesitated for a moment: "This is..."
Before You Congxi could come up with a suitable relational word, the boy reached out and answered first: "Hello, Auntie, I am Xiaoxi's deskmate, my name is Shen Yue."
Yu Junya reached out and shook his hand: "Oh, I see. So you two have a good relationship?"
“My best friend,” You Congxi said, turning to Shen Yue to introduce, “This is my sister’s mother.”
Shen Yue was taken aback for a moment, then greeted him again after realizing what he meant.
After exchanging a few pleasantries, You Congxi, using the excuse that he needed to go home to do his homework, took Shen Yue and left first.
After walking in silence for a while, Shen Yue coughed lightly and asked, "That...was that your father's second wife?"
You Congxi glanced at him and said, "Hmm."
"Then..." Shen Yue hesitated and stammered for a while before asking again, "...what does 'friend' mean?"
You Congxi didn't hear clearly: "What?"
"Tsk." Shen Yue was naturally fearless, and although relationships were a blind spot for him, he was certainly thick-skinned. "What if I were your best friend? What would Qu Qi do then?"
"I made it up," You Congxi said.
Shen Yue clicked his tongue in dissatisfaction.
He pretended not to hear while swimming in the stream.
She had just blurted out "best friend" because she was angry and wanted to annoy You Yuanming. After all, she believed that before she could even take two steps, Yu Junya would call You Yuanming and tell him that his daughter was dating too early. The second reason was... there was no second reason.
Shen Yue stood there watching You Congxi's indifferent back, realizing that she really hadn't noticed that he had stopped walking. He was so angry that his head was practically steaming.
I'm so angry and cold, what should I do if my best friend plays a trick on me!
Thinking this, his legs betrayed him, and he ran a few steps faster to catch up with the girl who was walking hurriedly ahead: "Why are you walking so fast?"
“I’d love to,” You Congxi said.
Shen Yue sighed.
“Who’s your deskmate?” You Congxi said again.
"Do you even know what rounding is?" Shen Yue said. "You bumpkin."
“Hmm, if you keep giving away like this, you could end up sitting next to Big Tree in her office,” You Congxi said.
Shen Yue didn't speak, and after a long while he sighed again.
"What?" You Congxi felt a lightness in her hand as the half-eaten candied hawthorn was taken away.
She paused for a second. They had only exchanged a few words, and she was already about to take the candied hawthorn back?
So stingy...
My wrist was grasped and stuffed into a warm place.
She instinctively turned her head to look over.
Her gaze shifted upwards, meeting the boy's eyes.
She moved her hand, which was stuffed in her hoodie pocket: "Hey..."
A breeze picked up, rustling the golden leaves on the roadside trees. Passersby lowered their heads, pulled their coats tighter, and quickened their pace to get home.
"Don't move around," Shen Yue said, frowning.
Swimming in the stream's pocket, her hand was icy cold, so Shen Yue simply wrapped her entire hand in his palm and warmed it with his body heat.
He looked the girl up and down: "Didn't you check the weather forecast before you went out?"
You Congxi stared at him without saying a word.
Shen Yue raised an eyebrow: "Gazing at me won't help. Just go out and freeze yourself into an icicle. You think you're so capable?"
You Congxi turned her head away and ignored him.
This woman is such an unreasonable old woman.
Only after entering the elevator was You Congxi able to pull her hand back. Her coat had no pockets, so she had to try her best to tuck it into her sleeves to prevent someone from nagging her again.
Shen Yue stood beside her, watching her little antics and couldn't help but chuckle.
They put on a very professional act, but in reality they're just like children.
He watched You Congxi open the door, not forgetting to remind her, "Don't forget your group assignment tomorrow, let's go together."
In response, You Congxi only gave him a short and forceful "No," followed by a deafening slam of the door shut.
Shen Yue shook his head, pretending not to see the girl's bright red ear tips after she took off her hat.
You little punk, you're just trying to fool me.
-
Despite saying she would never leave with Shen Yue, You Congxi still left home promptly at 9:30.
"Good morning, little fish." Shen Yue leaned against the door and smiled at her.
“It’s bad this morning,” You Congxi said, “Little Shen Yue.”
Shen Yue took it as an affectionate nickname she used for him, and happily ran to press the elevator button. While waiting for the elevator, he turned around and asked, "Have you eaten yet?"
"Hmm," You Congxi said.
“Oh,” Shen Yue nodded, casually shaking the paper bag in his hand, “Then it seems that the orange and carrot cupcakes I baked this morning will have to be given to He Qizheng.”
You Congxi's lips twitched, somewhat speechless: "Whatever."
Do you think she's a child, tearing each other's hair over a cake?
She felt that Shen Yue was incredibly naive.
But whether it was psychological or not, she felt that the entire elevator was filled with the sweet smell of orange and carrot cupcakes.
You Congxi swallowed hard, trying to hide his saliva.
Shen Yue chuckled to himself.
Finally stepping out of the elevator and breathing in the fresh air, before You Congxi could even open the app to call a car, a sleek black car pulled up in front of them. Shen Yue opened the back door, put one hand on the roof, and said in a pretentious tone, "Miss You, please get in."
You Congxi glanced at him, then at the car, hesitated for a second, and finally decided to get in.
Forget it, only a fool wouldn't take advantage of a good deal.
Shen Yue followed closely behind and sat in the back seat, telling the driver, Xiao Chen, to start the car, and then placed the paper bag he was carrying conspicuously between the two of them.
The sweet aroma of orange and carrot mini cakes filled the entire carriage once again.
Shen Yue was playing on his phone when he suddenly felt a gust of cold wind blowing in.
Shen Yue: "?"
He glanced at the car window that was slightly lowered beside the You Congxi River and asked, "Why are you opening the window? Aren't you cold?"
"It stinks," You Congxi said.
Smelly?
Shen Yue sniffed hard. All he could smell was the cool air and the car air freshener. Where was this stench coming from?
He caught a glimpse of the paper bag between the two of them out of the corner of his eye. He understood immediately. He glanced at You Congxi's stubborn profile, then suppressed a laugh and lowered his head to play on his phone: "Oh, then you can open it. Don't blame me if you catch a cold."
While enjoying the cool breeze by the stream, I was sullen and angry.
I'm annoyed that my sense of smell is too sensitive.
After being exposed to the cold wind for a while, she felt that if she kept blowing in the cold, she would get a migraine. So she closed the car window and took out her phone to try to distract herself.
A paper bag fell from the sky.
She turned her head: "What are you doing?"
Shen Yue was still looking down at his phone, and without looking up, he said, "Oops, my hand slipped."
You Congxi: "?"
Shen Yue moved his fingers on the screen a few times before finally looking up. He took the bag, put down the car's small table, and took the cake out of the bag and placed it on the small table.
"Ancestor, eat up, I specially grilled it for you."
You Congxi found him incredibly strange. In the elevator, he said he wanted to give it to He Qizheng, but when they got in the car, he acted like he was waiting for He Qizheng. When she didn't want to eat it anymore, he took it upon himself to put the table down and say that the cake was specially baked for her.
"Shen Yue, how can you be so self-righteous?" You Congxi frowned.
Shen Yue paused in taking out the tissue, placed it on the table, looked up at her, and said, "Aren't you the same?"
"You think you can control your feelings, you think you don't like me, you think you can keep the distance between us by constantly rejecting me..." Shen Yue stared intently into her eyes, "You Congxi, how can you be so self-righteous?"
