Chapter 250 Dignity
The clamor of buyers in the market turned into panicked screams, and the soldiers' harsh shouts echoed overhead: "Get out of here, everyone! Break open the barrels! Don't let her get away!"
Fina clutched her mouth tightly, huddled beneath the stinking manhole cover. The place was too narrow, forcing her to crouch, her skirt mired in rotting leaves and sewage. Like a rat in a sewer, she could only peer through the two-finger-wide crack in the wood, hoping the glare from her pupils wouldn't attract the attention of the searchers.
A pair of shiny black leather boots paused just a foot above the girl's head. She could almost see the leather grain of the soldier's pistol at his waist. Fina held her breath and squeezed her eyes shut, wishing she didn't exist.
With a thud, the soldier toppled the vendors' stacked barrels. The boards cracked, sending the potatoes tumbling everywhere, along with the rats that had been hiding in the shadows, startled. A dozen large rats rushed out in a panic, triggering a wave of vulgar curses.
Several mice even fell directly into the sewer through the cracks in the manhole cover. Fina was so frightened by the sudden warmth in her arms that she almost cried out. Fortunately, she held herself back and let the sharp-toothed little beasts panic and rush deeper into the darker and narrower tunnel.
The movement on the ground seemed to subside, and then there was the sound of soldiers forming up.
"Nothing?" Fina's pupils trembled violently. She heard someone say gloomily, "Remove all the manhole covers around here. I don't believe a little girl can grow wings and fly to the sky."
So the soldiers had no choice but to curse and resentfully lift the manhole cover of the vegetable market where sewage and stench were flowing everywhere. While searching with their noses pinched, they swore to make sure that little bitch was in trouble once they caught her.
As the footsteps of the Grim Reaper grew closer and louder, a boot touched the edge of the cover, making a distinct clanging sound. Fina's pupils shrank to a tiny dot. Her right hand slowly tightened around the dagger, and her left hand grabbed a handful of rotten vegetable leaves. She planned to wait for the moment the lid was opened to distract the viewer before stabbing them. She'd kill anyone she could.
"Oh God," the girl's lips moved silently. "Please protect me, please... reunite me with my brother, regardless of life or death."
A sharp military whistle suddenly pierced the air. The soldier who was about to bend down to pry open the manhole cover stumbled. He turned and left, muttering something. The girl's eyes reflected the pair of receding military boots, and she could hardly believe her good luck.
It gradually quieted down outside. The soldiers seemed to have received an urgent order and had to abandon their search. But out of caution, Fina didn't plan to leave the sewer immediately. She would be too conspicuous now. She planned to wait until the dead of night before escaping.
...At this point, her brother is probably already dead, and her elder brother Sabl's life or death is unknown—the girl clenched her teeth, trying her best to control her chattering teeth and not let herself cry out.
An unknown amount of time had passed. Just as Fina was beginning to feel drowsy, she suddenly heard a cold voice from above her head. "Here."
The entrance to the pit was suddenly ripped open by an invisible force. The sudden, blinding light dazzled Fina, leaving her with only a pair of gray eyes. But she didn't have time to adjust. She immediately grabbed a handful of rotten vegetable leaves mixed with rotting mud and threw them at the intruder. As the intruder frowned and retreated, she leaped up with a roar, dagger raised high, and rushed towards the tall, thin figure with hatred.
"—Die! Dirty noble lackey!"
The next second, she was pressed to the ground by an invisible airflow, and the dagger flew out of her hand and fell far away, leaving her standing there screaming and struggling.
The professor's mouth twitched. The girl, now covered in vegetable leaves and dirty water, with fish bones hanging from her hair, looked incredibly devastating. Even the savior froze and took a few steps back. She was still screaming, punching and kicking, unleashing the most vulgar and vicious curses of the street like a torrent.
"Devil's buddy! Lowly bastard! Ass of a donkey! I'm going to tear your head off and shove it up your father's asshole—"
Azuka rubbed his brows with a headache and whispered, "Quiet."
The other party immediately seemed to have pressed the mute button, his face flushed red, his mouth opened wide, but he couldn't make any sound. He could only stare at the boots of the intruder with hatred.
"The leader of the Land Freedom Party, sister of James Wood?" Knowing that someone was probably having a mysophobia attack, the professor stepped forward, squatted in front of the girl, looked at her profile and asked calmly.
The other person's eyes behind his hair were blood red.
Azuka moved his fingers slightly, and the girl, realizing she could speak, immediately cursed: "You'd better kill me right now, don't give me a chance, otherwise I will bite your throats and pull out your intestines—"
The professor nodded in understanding and stood up again: "It seems I found the right one."
Fina's forehead throbbed with rage when she realized she was once again being silenced. The two exchanged a few whispered words, and then she realized her body had actually levitated, "standing" lightly behind them, and involuntarily walked towards them. She felt like one of those pieces of meat hanging from a hook in a slaughterhouse, naked and still throbbing.
"We are not the ones arresting you." Seeing the girl staring at him with hatred and fear, the professor explained expressionlessly - but it was of no use. Perhaps this appearance of depriving people of their personal freedom was too unconvincing. The other party still looked like they wanted to pounce on him and die with their teeth. He decided to wait until the girl calmed down before speaking.
Fina watched helplessly as she walked through the streets in this state, the people on the street ignoring her. The two strange men entered a hotel and checked into a room. As soon as the door closed, she realized she had regained control of her limbs, her legs giving way, and she fell to the floor.
The black-haired man stood by the window with his back to her, looking at something unknown, while the strange man covered tightly with a mask stood in front of her.
"Miss, you can go to the bathroom to tidy yourself up." After calming down a little, Fina suddenly realized that the other person's voice was actually very young and very nice: "The hotel owner has provided clean clothes for you to change.
But this did not prevent her from staring at him with a wary look. The man seemed to remember something and raised a finger at her: "I will make you speak again."
The other person lowered his eyes slightly and looked at her calmly: "But please don't let me hear any dirty words from your mouth again, understand?"
“…”
The girl's pupils shrank violently, and her teeth made a high-pitched knocking sound. Cold sweat dripped down her forehead, leaving muddy trails along her neck. Only when those blue eyes slowly turned their gaze away from her did Fina shudder violently, clenching her fingers and panting violently, her heartbeat seeming to have stopped for an eternity.
...It's so scary, that person is so scary. The fear he brings to her is even greater than the fear of death.
Hearing the click of the door lock, Nova, who was observing the soldiers' movements from the window, turned his head in confusion. James Wood's sister had already obediently gone into the bathroom to clean herself, and he had expected more arguments.
Sure enough, this kind of gentle persuasion work has to be done by the savior. The professor thought seriously that a big devil like him is only good at exerting extreme pressure.
The person who had secretly used his divine power to scare someone came over without changing his expression, hugged the person from behind, and gently kissed the hair of his old enemy.
"You are not angry at all when someone points at your nose and curses you like this." He whispered. What's more, the other party is the savior of the brother and sister.
"Why are you angry? She's simply lost her mind out of fear." The professor glanced at him in confusion. "I wouldn't expect a teenager whose brain is still immature and who has just experienced a life-or-death escape to remain calm at all times. Such an unrealistic misjudgment could lead to subsequent poor decisions."
"What's more, she mistook us for subordinates of Governor Batalia and General Catheran," he pointed out seriously. "Strictly speaking, she wasn't scolding me, and her scolding was quite... varied."
It's almost to the point where you can publish a folklore paper.
After cleaning herself up and preparing herself mentally, Fina finally mustered the courage to push open the bathroom door. The black-haired man was already sitting on the sofa, legs crossed. The terrified weirdo was standing behind him. Hearing the noise, he glanced up at her coldly.
Fina: “…”
I wanted to escape back to the bathroom.
The black-haired young man raised his chin slightly, motioning her to sit on the single chair opposite. A steaming teacup was placed in front of her. "Would you like some tea?"
She didn't dare look at their faces. She trembled as she picked up the teacup and forced herself to take a few sips. Silence stretched. The man across from her slowly lowered his head to wipe his glasses. Fina endured for a moment, her worry for her brother finally outweighing her fear. "Who are you? Why are you looking for me? My brother..."
"He's still alive." The professor said briefly, and then he saw the other person's eyes suddenly brighten surprisingly.
"Really? Where is he now?!" Under the gaze of those smoky gray eyes, Fina suddenly choked. She remembered how she had cursed the other person when she was completely determined to commit suicide.
The girl suddenly knelt down in front of the man without hesitation and was about to slap herself in the face.
"I'm sorry, my dear sir, I apologize to you, just treat it as me farting just now——"
When she and her brother were orphans, they did this a lot to survive, begging for a living on the streets. If they could make someone happy, they could at least avoid a fatal beating.
...As long as her brother is alive, the dignity of a low-level trash like her is worth nothing.
