Chapter 39 Cave

In the past, when there was a war, if there was any disturbance, all the villagers would hide in the mountains and live in caves. They would not return to the village until the storm had passed.

Therefore, most of the food in the village and anything worth pawning has been hidden there for fear that they would be stolen.

But it has not been used for many years, I wonder if it has been abandoned now.

The younger children below don’t know about this, and the adults never tell them about it, for fear that the children will be curious and run over to play on their own.

Jiang Mengxue planned to go over and take a look to see what it looked like inside. Maybe it would be useful later.

However, she didn't know the exact location, she only knew a rough direction, and the higher she went up the mountain, the more confused she became about the direction.

The outside of the cave entrance should be covered. If there is no one leading the way, it would be difficult to find it even if someone passes by outside the cave entrance.

All the way up the mountain, we followed the path that everyone often walked on, and walked in the general direction that Jiang Mengxue knew.

The outskirts have been visited by adults and children, so it is difficult to find anything useful along the way. It is only because of the busy farming season recently that no one has time to visit the mountains, otherwise there would be few dry branches left that can be burned.

Occasionally I saw some dead branches and leaves along the way, so I picked them up and threw them into the space to use for burning fire later.

The further you go in, the more grass there is. If it rains, you can pick a lot of mushrooms. However, Jiang Mengxue has never picked them herself because she is afraid of encountering poisonous ones.

Because not all ugly mushrooms are non-toxic, and not all brightly colored ones are poisonous.

The further you go in, the less obvious it becomes. Normally, villagers rarely come to this place. At most, they hang out at the foot of the mountain. Occasionally, some people come up in groups to cut some dead trees and take them home to burn for firewood.

Jiang Mengxue used an axe to chop down many large branches along the way, as the roots were too big to dig.

I don’t recognize many things in the mountains and usually don’t dare to pick them randomly.

I happened to come across a wild grape vine that Jiang Mengxue knew, which was wrapped around a tree. The vine was winding up several trees.

The color has turned black and it is ripe. There are several wild grape trees nearby.

Jiang Mengxue found some cloth from the space and spread it under the trees, then held the trees and shook them hard.

The wild grapes fell down with a rustling sound. When they were almost done, they were picked up and poured directly into the bucket.

Most of the grapes on the vines have not fallen off, but Jiang Mengxue is not in a hurry. Wild grapes taste better after frost.

There were short grape vines on the side, so Jiang Mengxue took a pair of scissors and cut a few ripe ones. She would come back for the rest next time.

Those that are ripe can be picked and taken home to make wine, and the rest can be marked and picked again after the frost.

Finally, three plastic buckets were filled, weighing several dozen kilograms. I will deal with them when I have time.

In fact, there are quite a few wild fruit trees in the mountains, but they are scattered and not easy to find.

There are wild pears, wild persimmons, kiwis, chestnuts, and wild sweet potatoes, but it's not worth going into the mountains just to look for them.

Continuing forward, they encountered many wild fruits, whether they were familiar or not. Jiang Mengxue picked them whenever she saw them, just in time to eat them when she had nothing to do at home in winter.

After walking for such a long time, Jiang Mengxue still didn't see any cave-like places. She planned to walk around for a while and then go back, otherwise she would not be able to cook in time.

After passing the human-high grass in front, looking forward, there is a large open area without tall trees, and a large stream.

When I got closer and took a look, I saw that the water was only up to my knees at most. It was quite wide, at least ten meters to the other side.

There are quite a few fish in the water. Maybe because there are not many people coming here normally, the fish in the water are not afraid of people. Jiang Mengxue put her hand into the water but they did not swim away.

Of course this is not the most important thing.

It was the mountain a few hundred meters away across the stream. It should be at the bottom of the cliff. Maybe the cave she had been looking for was here.

Jiang Mengxue stepped on the big rocks in the river to get to the other side. It was probably because the villagers in the past wanted to make it easier for them to cross the river, so they placed these big rocks in a staggered position just enough for one person to cross the river smoothly, saving Jiang Mengxue the trouble.

Although this place is not considered a deep mountain now, few people come here normally because there are too many weeds and it is not convenient to walk. Therefore, except for hunters who occasionally come in to hunt, ordinary villagers basically do not go to this place. Otherwise, the nearby villagers would not have been able to hide here without worry.

Jiang Mengxue was also worried about whether there would be any wild beasts that could hurt people here, so she held a dagger in her hand, which gave her some psychological comfort.

When we get to the bottom of the mountain, if there is a cave, it should be nearby.

Jiang Mengxue took a stick and searched around.

The entrance to the cave must have been hidden intentionally.

While knocking and hitting with a stick, he felt around the edges with his hands.

There are weeds or vines in many places, and it is not easy to walk in this place.

Jiang Mengxue could only hold a stick and poke it, but the stick felt hard in one place, which was obviously different from the feeling on the grass before.

Jiang Mengxue used a dagger to clear the nearby weeds, revealing a hole less than one and a half meters high on the wall.

The entrance to the cave was covered with some broken stones, the middle was covered with weeds, and the outside was covered with a layer of mud. Unless you came to check it out specifically, you could say that you couldn't see it at all.

Maybe it's been a long time, the outer layer of soil has fallen off, revealing the stones inside. I probably didn't think about how to hide it at the time.

Jiang Mengxue took some effort to open the cave entrance.

The entrance to the cave was not big, and it looked pitch black inside. Jiang Mengxue was really a little scared.

But since I have already found this place, I have no intention of going back directly. I have to go in and take a look.
