Chapter 1 Prophecy

“Lu Xiaonan, listen carefully. What I’m about to tell you is no joke, you need to listen carefully. There’s a new kind of virus spreading globally right now, and this virus will completely break out and change the world in three days. Many people will die! So, I hope you don’t go to work from now on…”

"Hey, wait a minute, what's wrong with you? Are you kidding me?"

“I’m not crazy, and I’m not joking! Everything I’m saying is true. Remember, for the next three days, use all your money to buy food, preferably things with a long shelf life, store them, and then find a safe place to hide. Remember, you must do this, otherwise you’ll regret it in three days! Remember my words, you must do as I say, understand? Brother, I don’t want you to die! I’m not threatening you; in three days, this world will be completely changed!”

...

The above is what Su Ming said to me on the phone three days ago.

At the time, I didn't pay much attention and thought he was joking with me, but now I really regret not listening to him.

The story begins three hours earlier with a patient infected with the Ehrlich virus.

...

4 a.m. on December 31.

I lay on the bed in the lounge, resting with my eyes half-closed.

Working 22 consecutive hours left me exhausted, but that's how it is for doctors, and I've gotten used to it over the past year.

Knock knock knock.

There was a knock on the door of the break room, and Zhou Yang walked in. He and I were both second-year interns at the hospital.

"Are you awake?" he asked, his tone slightly excited.

"I didn't sleep, I just came to rest for a bit." I yawned; I was really sleepy.

"If you're not asleep, get up quickly! There are more than a dozen people outside, including several critically ill patients. They might even be able to participate in the surgery!" Zhou Yang said with a smile, grabbing a white coat from the side and throwing it at me.

"More than a dozen? What's going on?" I jumped out of bed and asked.

That's how interns are; they get as excited as dogs whenever they get to participate in surgery.

Zhou Yang raised an eyebrow and said excitedly, "I don't know. I heard it was a group of young people who took drugs in a bar and went crazy because they took too much."

"Let's go, let's go take a look." Hearing him say that, I also got a little excited.

Although hospitals see many patients every day, this is the first time I've ever encountered such a large-scale drug overdose incident.

I put on my white coat and followed Zhou Yang to the emergency room. There I saw a group of drunk young people occupying all the beds in the emergency room, and several other people who were sober were standing aside, at a loss.

There were even police officers on site maintaining order and keeping an eye on the group of young people to prevent them from escaping.

I took a closer look and found that their injuries were all very strange. Some of them had been hit or scratched, but most of them had been bitten. This puzzled me. Could it be that there were dogs in the bar?

"How long have these people been here?" I was a little surprised, wondering why I hadn't received any news earlier.

"I don't know, it seems to have been delivered about ten minutes ago, and I guess someone else is still delivering it," Zhou Yang said.

"Hey, you two, come over here and help!"

Suddenly, someone called our names at the door.

Zhou Yang and I ran over and saw that an ambulance had brought another patient over.

The accompanying medic pulled the stretcher out of the ambulance, and the patient lay on it, his head covered in blood, and he was somewhat disoriented.

"Why are there only two of you? Where is Dr. Zhang?" the doctor accompanying us asked.

We were just interns at the hospital and had little experience in treating patients. Faced with such a critically ill patient, we could only rely on the attending physician.

"Dr. Zhang and the others are in surgery, so they might not be available right now," Zhou Yang said.

Dr. Zhang is the attending physician in the emergency room today.

The accompanying doctor looked helpless and said, "Alright then, this is the last one anyway. Just make sure he doesn't die. The patient is twenty-five years old, suffered a severe blow to the head, his skull is caved in, and he's already mentally unstable. Be careful, this guy can bite..."

"Holy crap, damn it, bite me!" The medic had just finished speaking when Zhou Yang, who was examining a patient, was bitten.

Zhou Yang's fingers were being bitten so hard by the patient that his glove was torn in an instant.

Upon seeing this, I quickly helped pry open the patient's mouth, and Zhou Yang's fingers were finally pulled out.

After Zhou Yang took off his gloves and wiped his fingers clean with a disinfectant cotton swab, I saw that a piece of skin on his finger had been bitten through.

"Are you alright?" I asked.

"It's nothing, just a scratch, nothing serious," Zhou Yang chuckled, then pulled out a new pair of gloves and put them on.

The accompanying doctor shook his head and said helplessly, "Be careful."

Zhou Yang looked embarrassed. I chuckled to myself and followed the gurney into the emergency room.

At the time, I didn't realize how serious it was. By the time I came to my senses, it was too late.

The patient was carried to a bed in the emergency room. The nurse cut open his clothes and put him on a cardiac monitor. His heart rate was very fast, around 100, and his blood pressure was low.

After Zhou Yang took treatment measures, the patient's condition quickly stabilized.

However, the patient was confused and had dilated pupils, so it was unclear whether the optic nerve had been damaged.

"How long until Dr. Zhang arrives?" I asked the nurse.

The nurse said it would be soon.

I stared at the patient and said, "So, we're just going to wait now?"
