Chapter 18 The Dangerous Journey

Liangzi's death served as a wake-up call for me.

Even the smallest wound can become infected.

Life from now on will probably be very difficult, right?

Fei Lichao remained silent throughout the journey, and the three of us behind him didn't know what to say either. We didn't know where the air-raid shelter was, but the rest of the journey went much more smoothly than we had expected. Even when we encountered large groups of monsters, Fei Lichao had a way of avoiding them.

Half an hour later, it was almost completely dark.

Fei Lichao said, "We'll arrive in about two more kilometers."

It was supposed to be a two-kilometer journey, but as we went along, more and more monsters appeared on the road, the distance became random, and we wasted more and more time.

It was completely dark, but the streetlights came on.

It appears that the city's power system has not completely shut down.

As soon as it got dark, the monsters seemed to lose a lot of mobility.

Fei Lichao parked the car at the entrance of an alley, turned off the engine, and without turning on the interior lights, said in a serious tone, "You three listen up, the road ahead might be very dangerous, because from now on we can't drive there, we'll have to walk. So I expect you three to listen to me at all times, understand?"

"Understood," Pu Weichao said first.

"I understand," I replied.

Wu Shuang grabbed my hand again; she was clearly scared.

“Hey, Lu, especially you, I led this team out here just to find you. Even if I die, you can’t die, understand?” Fei Lichao grabbed my clothes and said.

"Understood." I nodded solemnly.

Fei Lichao's resentment towards me has not dissipated.

Immediately afterwards, he used a walkie-talkie to notify the soldiers in the air-raid shelter to prepare for the rescue.

"Get off on the left and go through the alley!" Fei Lichao said, then grabbed Liangzi's equipment, got off the bus, and went into the alley.

The monsters around us are far away, so even if they hear what's going on here, it will take them some time to get over.

Once inside the alley, Fei Lichao turned on his flashlight and shone it around. After confirming that there was no danger in the alley, he decisively turned it off to avoid attracting any monsters with the light.

I followed closely behind him, with Wu Shuang holding my hand and following behind, while Pu Weichao cautiously trailed behind at the very back.

Upon reaching the exit of the alley, the dim streetlights illuminated everything around us.

There are many monsters on the road, especially near the streetlights, where many monsters are lurking.

Fei Lichao surveyed his surroundings, turned to us and made a shushing gesture, prepared his gun, and set off first.

I followed behind him, and we walked almost against the wall. Our footsteps were quiet, though they made some noise. The monsters around us were all attracted by the streetlights, so they didn't notice us.

After walking for nearly fifty meters, we came to the bank of a small river.

There is a bridge about 30 meters to the north; the only way to cross the river is by using that bridge.

Looking across, there are no monsters on the bridge, so it should be safe.

Fei Lichao turned around and said to us in a low voice, "Once we cross the bridge, we'll be almost there. From now on, you must follow my orders!"

We all nodded in agreement.

There's no other way; if we don't agree, we'll only face certain death.

The monsters around us haven't discovered us yet, so we're still safe.

Fei Lichao took a deep breath, made a gesture, and we set off with him!

Clang!

Suddenly, a sharp sound came from behind us.

We were so scared we almost had a nervous breakdown.

We all turned our heads and stared at Pu Weichao, who was walking at the back.

Pu Weichao quickly shook his head and waved his hands, saying, "It wasn't me! I fell from up there!"

We looked up and saw a monster on the air conditioner unit above us, baring its teeth and twisting its body.

It appears to have fallen out of the window and landed on the air conditioner unit. Now that it sees us, it keeps wriggling its body. I estimate it won't be long before it falls off.

The key point is that what we should be worried about now is not the monster mentioned above.

The noise was loud enough that all the monsters around us heard it, and they all turned around from under the streetlights and ran towards us.

"Run!" Fei Lichao shouted, leading the way as he ran towards the bridgehead thirty meters away.

I pulled Wu Shuang along closely behind him.

Not to be outdone, Pu Weichao ran ahead of me.

Thirty meters is not a long distance, but at this moment, it feels as long as the sky falling.

The moment we ran past, those monsters pounced on us, following the sound of our footsteps. If we hadn't run fast, we would have been knocked down long ago.

We dare not stop!

Fei Lichao ran the fastest and reached the bridgehead in no time. He turned around, looked at us, and fired directly at the monster chasing us from behind.

Hurry up!

Gunfire continued, and I kept my head down, afraid of being accidentally hit by Fei Lichao's bullets.

The monsters behind us kept falling down. I pulled Wu Shuang and followed closely behind Pu Weichao. Three seconds later, we arrived at the bridgehead and met up with Fei Lichao.

"Come on, we'll be there once we cross the bridge!" Fei Lichao grabbed us and quickly ran to the other side of the bridge.

The monster behind them caught up to the bridgehead in less than an instant.

The constant roars sent chills down our spines.

Once we reached the other side of the bridge, Fei Lichao stopped and blocked the three of us.
