(The third update is here, and there will be a fourth update later. Please read on.)
“Yes, I really am a doctor,” I said.
This guy grabbed me and said eagerly, "That's great! Can you help my friend? He's been sick for the past two days and he just won't get better, even after taking medicine!"
I glanced at the other guy who was obviously sick, but instead of being in a hurry, I asked, "Could you please not rush? First of all, we don't know each other, and I don't think I have any obligation to help you."
The guy hesitated for a moment, then quickly said, "But we're not bad people, can't you help us out? Of course, I won't let you help me for nothing. I'll definitely repay you once my friend gets better. As long as your request isn't unreasonable, I can help you."
I glanced at Hu Fei, who shrugged. "You decide for yourself, don't look at me."
I rolled my eyes. I didn't ask you to decide for me.
I said, "Wait, tell me who you two are first."
The healthy guy said, "My name is Sun Zichen, and his name is Wang Hao. We're both twenty-nine this year. We used to be car mechanics, but then the zombie outbreak happened, so we fled and ended up in a residential area. We've been living there ever since. Until a couple of days ago, he got sick, and we didn't have any medicine around, so we had to come out to find some."
I nodded, glanced at the sick Wang Hao, and asked Sun Zichen, "Has he taken any medicine?"
Sun Zichen said, "I think we took some anti-inflammatory medicine yesterday, but it didn't help. It's even worse today, so we came out."
"Cough cough—" After putting down his gun, Wang Hao coughed twice, looking quite serious.
I didn't approach him or say anything. I went into the pharmacy, went to a shelf, took out a bag of unopened masks, opened it, took out a few, and handed them to Hu Fei and Sun Zichen.
"What does this mean?" Sun Zichen asked, holding the mask in confusion.
"If you don't want to get infected, wear it," I said, putting on the mask.
"But Wang Hao has a cold, why does he still need to wear this?" Sun Zichen asked, puzzled.
I glanced at Wang Hao, who listlessly found a stool and sat down. I said, "If he has a cold, he should have taken anti-inflammatory medicine yesterday, so it should have worked. Why isn't he better today? You gave him antibiotics, but they didn't work, which means his symptoms aren't caused by bacteria. It could be the flu, which is contagious."
Sun Zichen listened in a daze, then put on his mask.
Hu Fei quickly put on his mask and said, "I'll wait for you outside."
I ignored him, walked up to Wang Hao, and checked on his condition.
I touched his forehead; it was very hot. He was also coughing violently and had a runny nose—typical flu symptoms. Of course, other illnesses can also cause complications.
The main problem is that we don't have the necessary equipment right now, and I don't have much experience, so I can't make a diagnosis.
"How is it?" Sun Zichen asked.
I turned to look at Sun Zichen and said, "Go and find me a stethoscope."
"Huh?" Sun Zichen was surprised, but quickly realized what he meant. "Oh, I'll go find it right away."
After Sun Zichen left, Wang Hao looked at me with a sickly expression and asked, "Doctor, am I alright?"
I shook my head and said, "You're already like this, do you really think you're okay?"
Wang Hao gave a wry smile. "That's not what I meant. I meant, will I get better? I won't turn into a zombie, will I?"
I smiled and asked, "Do you want to hear the truth or a lie?"
Wang Hao was taken aback. "Of course it's the truth."
I nodded. "If you want to hear the truth, you'd better be prepared; the truth isn't always pleasant."
Wang Hao nodded with a worried expression.
I said, “First of all, one thing is certain: this is not a common cold, but viral influenza. However, I cannot diagnose what caused it. In this environment, I cannot perform blood tests or examinations on you. Moreover, I don’t have much experience, so it’s very difficult to determine your condition. And if I make a mistake, you could die, understand?”
Wang Hao nodded with a dejected look on his face.
I said, "Of course, it's not absolute. There's still a chance of recovery. You just can't give up."
Wang Hao nodded. "I know, I don't want to die yet."
I nodded. Sun Zichen was still looking for the stethoscope.
After thinking about it, if Wang Hao's condition isn't serious, it should be a simple flu, which is the most common type of flu. The onset of the illness takes two to three days. As long as he gets enough rest, he should recover in a few days. There shouldn't be any major problems; he might just feel unwell for a few days at most.
But if it's another type of flu, such as pneumonia or toxic influenza, the problem is much bigger. Or perhaps it's not the flu at all, but a complication of another illness, or even a collapse of the immune system? However, that's unlikely; if the key's hand sanitizer system had collapsed, he would be dead by now.
Of course, it could also be the Erin virus, a zombie virus that had been lurking since its emergence until it finally broke out at the end of last year, turning the world into this horrific state.
If it's caused by the Ehrlich virus, then there's nothing I can do.
However, you can check it first.
So I asked, "Have you been bitten by a zombie recently, or have any wounds come into contact with zombie blood or bodies?"
Wang Hao frowned in confusion, thought for a moment, and then shook his head, saying, "No, I haven't been out for a long time before I got sick, so I haven't had any chance to come into contact with zombies, and I haven't been bitten either. Doctor, why are you asking this? Do you suspect me...?"
