Chapter 2: The Change Begins

After the emergency room gates were pulled down, all the doctors, nurses, and patients were trapped inside; no one could get out or in.

After learning about the situation, the three police officers in the emergency room began to cooperate with our work.

Patients in the emergency room began to show emotions after seeing the room locked down, but they are still in a state of confusion and have not yet erupted.

Dr. Zhang then walked out of the emergency room and looked at all the patients gathered in front of him. There were more than twenty people in total. Including medical staff and police officers, there were now about thirty people in the emergency room.

Most of the patients had no serious injuries and were conscious. The only one who was seriously injured was the patient infected with the Ehrlich virus.

Dr. Zhang said, "Everyone, please be quiet."

His voice was loud, and with the police maintaining order, the entire emergency room quickly quieted down.

"I know you're all wondering why the emergency room is closed at this time. Don't worry too much. The reason we did this is because one of the patients we just brought in was infected with a virus that is contagious. So it's very likely that everyone here has been infected with the virus."

These words caused an uproar among all the patients.

They started arguing.

One by one, they bared their teeth and brandished their claws, trying to explain that they hadn't been infected.

The three police officers played a crucial role at this moment; through intimidation and threats, the patients present quieted down again.

Dr. Zhang continued, “I know everyone feels they are not infected, but I am a doctor, and whether you are infected or not is not up to you to decide. From now on, everyone needs to be checked, including all medical staff and the three police officers present. Once it is confirmed that you are not infected, you can leave. So, if you want to leave here as soon as possible, please quietly accept the check by our medical staff.”

"I'll say it again, making a fuss won't get you anywhere. And, to prevent the spread of infection, I hope you will not have any physical contact with each other, not even a touch, understand? Now, line up, the order of the checks will be arranged by three police officers."

After Dr. Zhang finished speaking, he arranged for the nurses to draw their blood.

"Zhou Yang, Xiao Lu, you two come with me to the office," Dr. Zhang said, and we followed him there.

After closing the door, Dr. Zhang asked me, "When are the people from the CDC coming?"

"They said they'd be there in ten minutes," I said truthfully.

Dr. Zhang nodded and continued, "I'm giving you a task now: keep an eye on the patient in the emergency room who's infected with the Ehrlich virus, and closely observe everything that happens to him. I need to inform my superiors about this."

"Understood." Zhou Yang nodded, and then we left the office.

However, just as we stepped out of the office, cries for help came from the emergency room.

"Help! Help! The patient has gone mad!" A nurse ran out of the emergency room, covered in blood and looking terrified.

Zhou Yang and I rushed over.

As soon as I arrived at the door of the emergency room, I witnessed a horrifying scene.

The patient infected with the Ehrlich virus was seen grabbing a nurse by the neck and biting her cheek. The nurse's skin was torn off by the patient's mouth, leaving her covered in blood!

"Ah!" The nurse screamed repeatedly, but I, standing at the door, didn't dare to go in. I had seen many bloody scenes, but this was the first time I had seen something so terrifying, and I couldn't help but feel scared.

The most disgusting thing is that after the patient bit off the nurse's face, he chewed it twice in his mouth and then swallowed it!

His action made me back down once again.

At this moment, Zhou Yang pushed me aside at the door, barged in, kicked away the biting patient, grabbed the screaming nurse, and ran out of the emergency room, making sure to close the door behind him!

I stood there dumbfounded, not knowing what to do.

Zhou Yang yelled, "Lu Xiaonan, what the hell are you standing there for? Come and help!"

I snapped out of my daze by his scolding, unwrapped the gauze next to me and pressed it against the nurse's bitten cheek. With the help of others, we helped the nurse lie on a gurney and began to clean and stop the bleeding from her cheek.

At this moment, Dr. Zhang came out of his office, went to the window of the emergency room, looked inside, and saw the patient smashing the window like a madman, constantly screaming.

Dr. Zhang walked over and asked, "What just happened?"

The nurse, who had been terrified, shook her head and said, "I...I don't know. The patient was fine at first, but then suddenly he jumped up and bit people."

After hearing what the nurse said, I became scared. Could it be that Su Ming's prediction from three days ago was true?

However, the current situation doesn't allow me to think about anything else.

After the nurse cleaned the wound, she wrapped her face with gauze. The skin on her face had been bitten off, and it would be very difficult to recover.

The nurse had calmed down, and Zhou Yang comforted her, "Don't worry, your face will be fine in the future."

Just when I thought the matter was over, a few minutes later, news came from the blood test site that something had gone wrong!

"Doctor, something terrible has happened! A patient is in trouble!" a nurse shouted as she ran over.

Upon hearing this, Dr. Zhang immediately patted me and said, "Xiao Lu, come with me."
