Chapter 22 Inspection Begins

At nine o'clock at night, the night wind was biting. I stood on the car outside the air-raid shelter, wrapped my clothes tightly around myself, and listened to the roars of the man-eating monsters below.

Fei Lichao climbed up from below, clutching a half-torn packet of instant noodles in his hand. He handed it to me and said, "Eat this."

I looked at the instant noodles he handed me, a puzzled expression on my face.

“I saw what happened before. You gave that person a pack of cookies, so he definitely didn’t eat dinner,” Fei Lichao said. “Take it, I’ll eat the rest.”

I didn't stand on ceremony, took it, and said, "Thank you."

My stomach was already growling with hunger, so I ordered two mouthfuls of instant noodles and swallowed them down after only a couple of chews.

"Let's start the inspection tomorrow," Fei Lichao said.

"Let's start tomorrow." I nodded, understanding what he meant.

“Well, it’s good to start early, so that any hidden dangers can be dealt with sooner. The disaster has been going on for five or six days, and there’s still no news from above. Judging from this situation… sigh, Dr. Lu, tell me, are we doomed?” Fei Lichao asked in despair.

Faced with this question, I paused for a moment and thought, "Actually, according to the pattern of virus outbreaks, such a large-scale outbreak is a very strange thing. Even the SARS and H1N1 outbreaks were only small-scale outbreaks, but the country controlled the development of the epidemic in a very short time."

"As for now..." I stared at the man-eating monsters below. Or rather, the living dead, since these were people who had died and turned into this form.

They're just like the zombies and walking corpses in movies.

"...It's hard to say exactly what happened. The Ehrlich virus was discovered two years ago. At that time, because the virus could not be transmitted to humans, no one paid much attention to it. It wasn't until two days before the outbreak that the World Health Organization released a message stating that the virus could be transmitted to humans."

Fei Lichao looked dissatisfied and puzzled, and asked, "If this thing can be transmitted to humans, why wasn't it discovered in the first place?"

I shook my head: "I don't know. Maybe it didn't infect humans at first, but the virus might have mutated after it was discovered."

Fei Lichao asked, "Could it be that someone is deliberately researching this thing so that it can be transmitted to humans?"

I looked at him, gave a wry smile, and shook my head, saying, "You can't be sure about these things. Maybe someone did it, or maybe the virus evolved on its own. Anyway, I don't know what's going on."

Fei Lichao frowned, shook his head, and stopped thinking about it.

He patted me on the shoulder and said, "Let's get the check-up done tomorrow. I'll arrange everything for you. Just let me know if you need anything."

"Um."

I nodded, standing on the roof of the car, the cold wind brushing my face.

Actually, there's another situation I haven't mentioned.

That is, it's possible that all of humanity in the world has been infected with this virus, but due to some special reasons, the virus has remained dormant in a small number of people and has not broken out, while the virus has broken out in most people and turned them into man-eating monsters.

After all, overnight, 99 percent of the city’s population turned into monsters; only if everyone was infected with the virus could such a phenomenon occur.

This situation is terrifying just to think about.

...

The following morning, a light rain began to fall.

The entire air-raid shelter became much colder and more gloomy.

Around 8 a.m., the people in the air-raid shelter had already lined up, ready for inspection.

Not only the more than one hundred civilians in the air-raid shelter, but also more than twenty soldiers needed to be checked.

At first, the people in the air-raid shelter had a lot of complaints, but when they saw that the soldiers were also being inspected, their voices of discussion quieted down considerably.

The inspection took place in the warehouse.

Wu Shuang and I examined them together.

Only one person can enter at a time to ensure that no one is missed.

The soldiers were checked first, so that once they were checked, order could be maintained.

Fei Lichao was the first to be checked, and there were no problems. Next were the twenty-odd soldiers.

Fei Lichao told me that originally there were about fifty people in the air-raid shelter, but later more than thirty people were sent out to search for rescue and supplies, and almost none of them came back.

Now, only about twenty people remain.

Every soldier obeyed orders and took off their clothes for inspection as I instructed. As long as there were no new scars, the inspection was quick, and it usually only took about a minute to check each soldier.

Later on, if they encountered soldiers with scars, they would ask them a few questions, and if they saw that nothing was wrong, they would move on.

There were more than twenty people, but suddenly only three remained.

When the next person came in, Fei Lichao saw that he was moving slowly and urged, "Xiao Li, hurry up."

"Yes, Captain." Xiao Li straightened up and quickened his pace to come to me.

I said, "Take off your shirt first."

"Yes." Xiao Li's eyes showed a slight resistance, but he still did as I said and began to take off his clothes.

As soon as he took off his shirt, leaving him in only a t-shirt, I stared at the gauze on his wrist and asked, "What kind of wound is this?"

Xiao Li looked flustered and said, "It's just a cut."

Wu Shuang and I exchanged a glance, and I said, "Let me see."

I reached out my hand, but before I could even touch it, Xiao Li withdrew his right hand, covering the gauze on his wound, and said warily, "It's nothing, you don't need to look at it, it's just a minor injury, it's fine."
