"What's wrong?" Fei Lichao asked worriedly.
The woman inside was his comrade's wife; he couldn't bear to accept it if anything happened to her.
Wu Shuang shook his head and said, "I don't know either, why don't you take a look?"
Following behind Wu Shuang, I was puzzled. Could something have happened?
When we arrived at the corner where the cardboard boxes were piled up, Liu Yun was already dressed, while the little boy stood to the side, tugging at his mother's trouser leg, looking at us as if he were very scared.
When Liu Yun saw us come in, she looked puzzled and asked Fei Lichao, "What's wrong?"
Fei Lichao and I both looked at Wu Shuang.
Wu glanced at the little boy, and I understood what she meant. Looking down, I saw the little boy tilting his head back, looking at me with a mixture of fear and curiosity.
I crouched down, smiled, and asked, "What's your name?"
The little boy didn't speak and hid behind his mother.
Liu Yun looked at me warily, picked up her son, and asked, "Doctor, what's wrong? Is there something wrong with my baby?"
I stood up and said, "Excuse me, may I examine your son?"
Liu Yun looked at Fei Lichao and asked for his opinion.
Fei Lichao nodded.
Only after receiving the other party's consent did I smile and ask the little boy, "What's your name?"
"Beibei," Liu Yun said.
I nodded and continued, "Beibei, can Uncle see your hands?"
Beibei hesitated, but eventually stretched out her little hand.
I held his little hand, rolled up his sleeve, and saw that Beibei's fair little arm was covered with crisscrossing black veins. Although they were very faint, they were still visible.
I pulled down Beibei's turtleneck sweater, and everyone immediately noticed the black veins on Beibei's neck.
The meaning of black veins is obvious without even thinking.
I checked Beibei's entire body again and found that there were no bite marks or wounds on her body.
Seeing my furrowed brow, Liu Yun asked anxiously, "Doctor, is Beibei alright?"
I glanced at Fei Lichao, hesitant to speak.
Fei Lichao understood what I meant and said with a smile, "Xiaoyun, let me talk to him first, you wait a moment."
He pulled me aside to a corner and whispered, "What's wrong? Is there really something wrong with Beibei?"
I shook my head and said, "I don't know, but you saw the black veins on this child's body; they're all over his body."
Fei Lichao asked, puzzled, "But when you examined the child just now, there were no wounds on his body. How could this be?"
I said, "The first person to turn into a monster probably didn't have any wounds either. It's not that only people who are bitten can turn into monsters. It's possible that Beibei came into contact with something and then got infected with a virus, which is why she turned into this."
Fei Lichao nodded blankly, "So, you mean, that child Beibei might turn into a monster?"
"Mm." I nodded.
“But…” Fei Lichao gave a bitter smile, unsure of what to say. His face was grim. After a long silence, he finally asked, “Then, is there any way to treat this?”
I shook my head and said, "No, if there were, there wouldn't be so many man-eating monsters outside now."
Fei Lichao frowned, rubbing his forehead, unsure of what to do.
I could tell he was very anxious.
After all, he is his comrade's child. If something happens to him, how will he explain it when his comrade comes back?
Seeing his conflicted look, I said, "How about I go and explain the situation to her first?"
Fei Lichao looked up at me, shook his head and said, "I'll go. You continue the examination. I'll take care of the mother and child. I'll let you know if anything happens."
After he finished speaking, he went into the corner and explained the situation to Liu Yun. A moment later, I heard Liu Yun crying from the corner. Clearly, Liu Yun did not believe the outcome.
In the end, Liu Yun followed Fei Lichao out of the warehouse and went outside.
Wu Shuang asked me, "Was that child really infected with the virus? Or was it for some other reason?"
I looked at her and said helplessly, "I don't know. I'm just a second-year intern at best, and I don't understand viruses. It would be best if I was wrong, so that Beibei wouldn't be in any trouble. But if it really is the Erin virus, we have to take precautions."
Wu's eyes also revealed helplessness. "So, it's better to believe it exists than not, right?"
"More or less," I said, taking a deep breath to compose myself. "Alright, go call the people outside in, and continue the inspection."
"Oh, God is so unfair. Why does a little child have to suffer like this?" Wu Shuang complained.
The inspection continued. I spent the entire afternoon checking on the people in the air-raid shelter. The afternoon went smoothly; no one was bitten or infected with the virus. There was only a couple with a slight cold. I gave them some cold medicine and then let them leave.
Around 5 p.m., everyone in the air-raid shelter had been checked.
The only ones who had problems were Xiao Li and Bei Bei, who were checked in the morning; everyone else was fine.
As things stand, the air-raid shelter is still quite safe.
...
After the checkup, I relaxed completely, slumped onto the table, and felt listless.
This day has been exhausting.
Wu Shuang leaned over next to me, nudged me, and said, "Hey, Lu Xiaonan."
"Hmm?" I turned my head to face her.
"I have a question for you," Wu Shuang said.
"What's the problem?" I asked curiously.
"Yeah, we were stuck in the hospital before, right? You said you were going out to find a girl. Who was that girl?"
I was taken aback. If Wu Shuang hadn't brought it up, I wouldn't have remembered this at all.
He gave a wry smile and said, "The girl I'm looking for is named Jiang Xiaoxiao. She was Zhou Yang's girlfriend. As you know, Zhou Yang is dead, so I wanted to find Xiaoxiao and tell her the news."
Wu Shuang nodded, then asked, "Is this Jiang Xiaoxiao also from our school?"
"Yes, but she's a nursing major."
"Oh, I see. I thought you were looking for a girl you liked," Wu Shuang said.
I shook my head.
Wu Shuang asked, "Hey, let me ask you this: do you have a girl you like? Of course you do, right?"
I nodded and said, "Yes, there definitely is."
"Who is it?" Wu Shuang's eyes lit up.
"Ah!" Just as she finished asking that question, a scream suddenly came from outside the warehouse.
The screams were extremely painful, like they were being torn apart.
Wu Shuang and I were both so frightened that we jumped up.
Wu Shuang asked in surprise, "What's going on?"
"Outside! It must be Xiao Li!" I exclaimed. The scream I heard just now was clearly a man's voice.
