The mother and daughter had actually visited half a month ago. The daughter's name was Fang Lin, and she was only seventeen years old. She had congenital heart disease and was originally scheduled to have a heart transplant at the end of last year, but due to the zombie outbreak, the surgery could not be performed.
The mother and daughter lived a very difficult life in the Jiangbei community. Because Fang Lin had a heart condition, she was unable to work and received very little food and supplies, but she was able to barely get by.
Two weeks ago, after learning about this, they came to me without hesitation, wanting me to cure Fang Lin.
But how could that possibly be done?
After learning about Fang Lin's situation, I realized that she didn't have much time left to live. Her heart was failing severely, and the only solution for this kind of condition was a heart transplant. But with the current conditions, let alone a heart transplant, you could even die from an infection during an appendectomy.
So Fang Lin could only wait to die.
At the time, I only gave Fang Lin some medicine, and I didn't know how long she could live.
Now that half a month has passed and they've come back again, Fang Lin is probably in grave danger.
I entered the conference room and asked, "What's going on?"
Zhang Zhihao said, "His heartbeat and breathing stopped, and then we brought him over immediately."
I checked Fang Lin's condition; her heart had stopped beating. Given her current state, I estimated she would die soon.
I quickly performed CPR on her.
Actually, I knew in my heart that once Fang Lin's heart stopped, there was no way to save her.
I pressed it for about two minutes, then said to Zhang Zhihao, "You press it."
I went to the side, prepared adrenaline, and injected it into her, but it didn't work; Fang Lin didn't react at all. I injected her again, but after a few seconds, there was still no response.
Unbeknownst to them, a full twenty minutes had passed since the rescue began, and the mother's cries outside had not subsided.
Half an hour later, I stopped the resuscitation efforts.
Looking at this seventeen-year-old girl in front of me, I was helpless. Her heart had already failed, and there was no way to keep her alive except for a heart transplant.
Zhang Zhihao, panting, asked, "Brother Lu, is there no other way?"
I shook my head and said, "There's nothing I can do, I can't save her."
Zhang Zhihao clenched her fist and punched the wall next to her with great force; I saw that her fist bled.
The girl was already dead; in fact, she had been dead since the moment she was brought in.
I turned around and opened the door, saw my mother's hopeful eyes, and shook my head.
The mother was stunned, tears welling up in her eyes. Her gaze shifted, and she saw the girl's body in the meeting room. She ran in, tightly embraced the girl's body, and began to sob.
I took a deep breath, glanced at Sister Jing beside me, and said, "Sister Jing, I'm leaving this to you."
"Mm." Sister Jing nodded.
I walked upstairs numbly to the rooftop. The crying from the conference room below was so loud that I could hear it even from here.
He died in the end.
When the mother and daughter came half a month ago, I hoped they could live a peaceful life. Even if the girl's heart disease was incurable, I thought they could live a peaceful life for a month or two without any problems. But now, only half a month has passed, and they have come back, and the girl has died.
I stood on the rooftop without an umbrella, and the drizzle fell on me, making me feel very cold.
A few minutes later, Zhang Zhihao arrived on the rooftop.
I asked, "Is the next step resolved?"
Zhang Zhihao said, "Sister Jing is dealing with it. I didn't want to stay down there, so I came up."
"Um."
Zhang Zhihao said, "Brother Lu, I don't know how to explain what happened today."
Without turning around, I put my hands in my pockets and said, "I know what you're going to say. If you don't know how to say it, then don't say it."
Zhang Zhihao said, "No, Brother Lu, I have to say it. If, I mean if you weren't in this school today, but in Jiangbei, perhaps Fang Lin wouldn't have died. So, Brother Lu, come with me to Jiangbei. That way we can get more people treated without having to travel all the way from Jiangbei to here. I really don't want to see anyone else die!"
I turned to face Zhang Zhihao. "Zhang Zhihao, I said before that we won't go to Jiangbei. My relationship with Jiangbei can only be a cooperative one."
"Why! Jiangbei isn't some dragon's den or tiger's lair, Brother Lu, why are you so unwilling to go?" Zhang Zhihao asked, frowning.
I didn't answer him because this matter is hard to explain.
Zhang Zhihao stood behind me in silence for a long time before saying, "Brother Lu, I won't give up. I will keep persuading you until you are willing to join Jiangbei."
