(The whole thing will be released at midnight, so take your time reading it.)
Why, why?!
"Ah!" I screamed as I lay on the ground, tears streaming down my face!
Zhang Zhihao is dead! It's over! It's all over. Why did it have to be like this? Why can't everyone live in peace? Why do people have to fight tooth and nail for every little bit of resources? Why do the two sides have to be enemies?
Why is that?!
I stared at the smile on Zhang Zhihao's lips, wondering what he was thinking before he died—maybe something good.
I reached out and touched his neck; there was no heartbeat, and he didn't move at all!
I choked up for a long time. When I heard the roar of zombies behind me, I stood up, turned around, and saw that one of the people I had killed earlier had turned into a zombie. Blood was still oozing from his neck, but he walked toward me without any feeling.
I gripped the gun in my hand, aimed it at his head, and fired. The zombie died instantly.
I wiped away my tears, glanced back at Zhang Zhihao, who was already dead in the driver's seat, and suddenly felt that I was really ridiculous.
I promised myself I wouldn't let anyone around me die, but now, Zhang Zhihao is dead! What use am I? Compared to Zhang Zhihao, I'm utterly useless. I keep making vows, yet I keep watching the people around me die.
Is all of this really as Su Mu once said, an inevitable course of history?
Is the inevitability of history simply about death? Is it about sacrificing oneself for some so-called great cause for posterity?
What a ridiculous inevitability!
What will the future hold? Will I one day die a violent death in the street?
I remember Zhang Zhihao saying something to me last night, it was something like this:
“I believe we have a future. We must fight with all our might. One day, we will find Zhou Liang. For my brother-in-law, for my nephew, for Chen Shui, for Sister Yun Lan, for Yan Zhengfeng, we must fight to survive.”
So, the result of risking your life is to lose it?
I didn't want to accept this outcome, but now it seems I have no choice but to, because Zhang Zhihao is dead, having paid the most tragic price for this desperate act.
Tears welled up again, but after wiping them away, I tried to compose myself.
Now is not the time for sadness; perhaps Fei Lichao is still in Jiangbei resisting Biyuan's sneak attack.
I have to go back and resolve this matter.
Regardless of whether Jiangbei falls or holds out after we return, we must continue on our journey.
Zhang Zhihao's body is stuck in the cab of the pickup truck, and I can't get it out, so I can only leave it here temporarily and come back after this matter is over.
I started walking towards where Sister Jing and Su Mu were.
Just then, as I approached, I saw a stranger appear in front of Su Mu, holding a knife in his hand, looking hesitant, as if considering whether or not to kill him.
I frowned, raised my pistol, pointed it at the hesitant man in front of me, and shouted angrily, "Hey! Stop!"
Hearing my angry shout, the other person took two steps back, raised their head, and turned to run away.
I fired a shot in his direction, and with a bang, he was so startled that he fell to the ground.
I ran over, glanced at Su Mu who was still panting, and then went to the guy's side with a sigh of relief. I kicked the knife out of his hand, grabbed him from the ground, slammed him against the wall, pressed the gun against his chin, and frowned as I asked, "Are you from Biyuan?"
The guy looked at me with fear in his eyes, hesitated for a moment, and then shook his head.
This guy looks very young. Although his face is a bit dirty, you can tell he's only seventeen or eighteen years old, at most a high school student. The people at Biyuan are truly heartless, actually letting such a cowardly and timid person come out.
And judging from the way this guy's eyes were darting around, he seemed very unwilling to do such a thing.
I originally intended to just shut this guy up, but then an idea suddenly popped into my head that I might be able to put into practice.
"You don't need to lie to me. I know you're from Biyuan. You wanted to kill him just now, didn't you?"
The man looked aggrieved and said, "I...I haven't killed anyone. Please, can you let me go? I...I really haven't killed anyone since I joined Biyuan."
I stared at him and asked, "What's your name?"
"Zhang, Zhang Ze," he said fearfully.
I nodded. "So you saw everything that just happened?"
Zhang Ze nodded, not daring to breathe loudly.
I stared into his eyes and said, "Fine, I can spare your life, but you have to answer a few questions for me. Any objections?"
Zhang Ze shook his head and said, "No, no."
I asked, "That's good. Now, since you saw everything you just witnessed, do you think what they did was right?"
Zhang Ze shook his head.
I said, "Then tell me, what's wrong with it?"
Zhang Ze's expression turned troubled, and he said, "They...they are killing innocent people indiscriminately."
I stared at him. "Don't give me that nonsense. I want to hear your real thoughts. If you don't, I'll make you stupid right now."
Zhang Ze said fearfully, "I'll talk, I'll talk. I just think what they did was too cruel, but they told me before that you were the really cruel people, the ones who killed innocent people indiscriminately, so, so I think no one is wrong."
I nodded and said, "Is this what they told you? Fine, I'll tell you. From the very beginning, everything was forced upon us by your Biyuan. From the time Biyuan people started spying on the school, to the time your Biyuan people kidnapped my people, and now you're setting a trap to kill us. Who do you think is right and who is wrong in this whole affair?"
