Chapter 363 A Small Trouble

I led Lu Yun to the window we had been looking at before. I called out to her, but after a long time, there was no response from inside.

Lu Yun looked at me from the side and asked, "Are you sure that child is in here?"

I nodded and said, "I'm sure. I talked to him for a long time just now. Didn't you hear me talking?"

Lu Yun shook her head and said, "I was moving things inside, how could I possibly hear you? Try calling out a couple more times, maybe the child is hiding?"

"Hey kid, are you still there?"

I called out twice more, but there was no response from the second-floor window. The child didn't appear at the window, and no sound came from inside. This puzzled me. What was the child doing? Was he unhappy about coming out to talk to me?

"Little friend, are you still there? Your sister and uncle aren't bad people," Lu Yun called out beside me.

Wait, what's up with this uncle?!

After calling out several times, there was still no answer.

"Why isn't there any sound at all?" Lu Yun asked in confusion, then patted me and asked, "Hey, Lu Xiaonan, are you kidding me? Is there really no one inside?"

I gave a wry smile. "Why would I play this on you?"

Lu Yun asked, "Then why isn't there any sound? If he really is a child, he would definitely run out when he heard our voices. Besides, you just said you talked to that child for a long time, which means that the child isn't shy!"

I was also puzzled. Looking at the tightly closed gate in front of us and the alleyway not far away, I said, "Why don't we go up and take a look? Just in case something unexpected happens."

Lu Yun said, "I don't mind, I'll go up if I want."

"Let's go upstairs and take a look."

Lu Yun and I came from the alley to the back door. Since there were shops in front and no door leading upstairs, we could only go through the back door.

Arriving at the back door, we estimated the location of the second-floor window and entered through the second back door, reaching the second floor. However, once on the second floor, we were somewhat at a loss.

Because the door on the second floor is a security door and it's locked, there's no way to get in.

We knocked on the door a few times, but the child inside still didn't respond.

"I can't get in, what should I do?"

I said, "We can't just leave him here, can we? The second floor isn't that high anyway, why don't we go find a ladder and go in from the outside?"

Lu Yun didn't object to my idea. She even thought about it carefully and said, "I remember seeing a ladder in the supermarket before that looked pretty tall. Should I go get it?"

"Sure, sure," I said with a smile. "Thanks."

Lu Yun didn't say anything. After we went downstairs, we ran to the supermarket entrance. In just a few minutes, Lu Yun pushed out the wheeled ladder from inside the supermarket.

"Oh my god, I'm exhausted! Lu Xiaonan, I'm never going out with you again. It's just too tiring!"

"I'd like to go in, but there are too many zombies inside. I'll still have to rely on you. Anyway, thanks."

"Alright, stop talking nonsense and hurry up. After we get that child down, we'll go back," Lu Yun said, waving her hand.

"Okay, let's go."

We pushed the ladder downstairs and found that it didn't reach the second floor, but it was enough.

I locked the bottom wheels and said to Lu Yun, "I'll go up and take a look first. You hold the ladder for me."

"Okay," Lu Yun replied.

After I climbed the ladder, I reached the top, which was close to the second floor. Then I continued climbing, my hands leaving the ladder and gripping the wall below the second-floor window. As I continued upward, when my feet touched the top of the ladder, my hands were able to firmly grip the window.

With a sudden effort, I flipped myself through the window.

When I landed, I felt like I had run over something. I rolled over on the ground before I got up.

When I got up, my back was to the window, so I could see the whole room at a glance. The room was obviously a child's room, with a lot of toys on the table and the bed sheets had cartoon characters on them.

The entire room was covered in dust. The table, the bed, and the floor were all covered in a layer of dust. It was the kind of room that hadn't been cleaned up for a long time.

"Hey, Lu Xiaonan, have you found it yet?" Lu Yun called out from below.

I turned around, about to shout downstairs, but when I saw the corpse by the window, I froze.

On the floor inside the window lay a corpse, wearing a blue down jacket. The body was almost completely decomposed, indicating that it had been dead for several months. The corpse appeared to be only about twelve or thirteen years old. Most importantly, the corpse was holding a slingshot in its hand!

Just like that child from before!

I swallowed hard and couldn't help but take a step back, feeling a surge of fear.

Is this the same corpse as the child from earlier?

But, but this body has clearly been dead for several months, and it's already decomposed! It can't be the child from before... Could it be that I just saw a ghost?

I shook my head. No, no, no, I just asked Mingming and he saw the child. That child even shot at me with a slingshot!

The child must be hiding nearby.

Without thinking twice, I started rummaging through drawers and cabinets looking for something.

But I searched the entire room, even the living room outside, another room, the toilet and the kitchen, I searched almost everywhere, but I just couldn't find the child!

Knock knock knock!

Just then, there was a knock on the security door, which startled me.

"Lu Xiaonan, open the door quickly! Are you alright? Open the door!" Lu Yun's voice came from outside the door.

I opened the door and let Lu Yun in.

After Lu Yun came in, she looked at me and asked, "Are you alright?"

I shook my head and said, "It's nothing."

Lu Yun breathed a sigh of relief. "Why didn't you answer when I called you earlier? I thought something had happened to you. Honestly."

"Sorry, I didn't notice," I said.

Lu Yun waved her hand to indicate that she didn't care, and asked, "So, have you found the child?"

I shook my head and said, "The child is missing, but... I feel like I saw a ghost?"

Lu Yun looked at me in surprise and said, "What did you say?"

I said, "I think I saw a ghost."

Lu Yun frowned, clearly not understanding what I meant, so I told her everything I had just seen. Then, she came to the center of the room where the child was, stared at the corpse below the window, and shook her head.

"Only this explanation can account for what I just saw; otherwise, we would have found the child long ago!"

Lu Yun rolled her eyes and looked at me, saying, "I think you've gone crazy. Okay, stop talking nonsense. Whatever you saw, since there are no children here, let's go."

"But……"

Lu Yun didn't say anything more and ran out of the room.
