Chapter 371 The Raiders

"What's wrong? What happened?" Sister Jing's voice came through the walkie-talkie.

"Nothing has happened yet, but this road feels really strange to me. Jing-jie, take a close look, are there any zombies around?" I said.

After looking for a while, Sister Jing said, "There are indeed no zombies. Shall I back up now?"

I said, "Let's reverse. Even if I'm wrong, I don't want to take the risk. Let's get out."

"Okay, I understand."

Then, I saw in the rearview mirror that Sister Jing started reversing, so I also stepped on the gas and started reversing.

The road we're on now is very narrow, so we can't turn around and can only reverse. Luckily, we didn't come in too far, so reversing out is easy.

As I reversed away from the road, I kept my eyes on the houses on both sides of the road ahead, constantly on guard against the possibility that a large group of people might suddenly rush out from these houses and surround us.

What I fear most is a large group of people rushing out; if that happens, we're all probably doomed.

Fortunately, we were able to get off the road safely in no time and then turned around and headed back.

The horde of zombies had already approached this area, making it impossible to continue towards Pearl City. Therefore, we had no choice but to turn back and find another route.

This time, Sister Jing led the way, and I followed behind.

Jingjie's voice came through the walkie-talkie, "Xiaonan, how's it going? Any developments later?"

I glanced at the rearview mirror and said, "Nothing's wrong. We've shaken off the horde of zombies behind us."

Sister Jing said, "Alright, come on up and continue leading the way."

"knew."

After saying that, I stepped on the gas, overtook Sister Jing's car, and continued to lead the way. Now that we were out of danger, I breathed a sigh of relief.

Wen Guochao didn't understand my actions just now and asked, "What happened just now? Why did you suddenly come out from that road?"

I said, "I felt something was off about that road just now. Didn't you just say there were no zombies on that road?"

Wen Guochao, puzzled, said, "Isn't it normal that there are no zombies?"

I chuckled, but before I could explain, Fei Lichao behind me spoke up, "Normal my ass! If a place doesn't have zombies, that's the most abnormal thing. It means that the place is likely inhabited. If we had gone any deeper, we probably would have been ambushed!"

Wen Guochao looked surprised.

I said, "What Lao Fei just said is true. You've never joined a team, and you probably haven't participated in any team battles, so it's normal that you don't know about this kind of thing."

Wen Guochao's expression remained one of surprise and uncertainty.

I continued, "Don't overthink it. Maybe there was no one in there just now. Even if there were, the fact that they didn't come out to cause trouble for us means they weren't targeting us. We left in time, and they didn't chase after us. Don't worry, nothing will happen."

Only after saying this did Wen Guochao breathe a sigh of relief.

He seemed very afraid of this kind of thing.

When I first met the family of three, Wen Guochao was very wary and unwilling to interact with strangers. The same was true during our second meeting; he remained vigilant until the third time we met, after I rescued them, at which point he lowered his guard.

The fact that he's so afraid now is probably due to his personality, and it could also be related to his past experiences.

However, this is all his own business. As long as he poses no threat to us, there is no problem.

If Wen Guochao becomes a threat to us in the future, I wouldn't mind killing him.

...

The afternoon passed quickly. Because of the zombie horde that had delayed us for more than an hour, we didn't walk much that afternoon.

As darkness approached, we had no idea which road we had taken. We were surrounded by desolate wilderness and couldn't find any houses to stay in or sleep in.

Not long after, around 6:30, Sister Jing's voice came through the walkie-talkie, "Xiaonan, let's find a place to park. I think the area is pretty clean, there aren't many zombies. Let's set up a tent here tonight and sleep. Everyone's hungry, we've been traveling all afternoon, let's take a break."

"Okay, I understand."

Immediately, I parked my car on the side of the road. There was an open space next to the road, suitable for setting up a tent and sleeping.

After the seven of us got off the bus, Sister Jing and Zhang Xue started preparing dinner.

As for Lu Yun, Wen Guochao, and I, the three of us started setting up the tent on the side. Before long, dinner was ready, and the tent was set up.

When we finished eating, I said, "We'll take turns keeping watch later. Jingjie, you'll be on the first shift, I'll be on the second, and Wen Guochao, you'll be on the third."

"I'll take the second shift, Xiaonan. You must be tired after driving all day. Take a good rest," Fei Lichao said hurriedly.

I firmly refused, saying, "Your injury hasn't healed yet and you need to rest. Once you're healed, you'll have plenty of time to be busy."

Fei Lichao looked somewhat gloomy, glancing at his missing left hand, lost in thought.

At this moment, Sister Jing noticed that Fei Lichao was a little upset and said, "Fei Lichao, why don't you take the first shift for me? I'm already very tired."

Upon hearing this, Fei Lichao decisively said, "Okay, I'll take your place."

I was stunned for a moment.

Sister Jing turned her head and glanced at me, giving me a look.

I immediately understood what Sister Jing meant, glanced at the smiling Fei Lichao, and felt a little apologetic.

Fei Lichao has lost one hand, and I just refused his offer to keep watch for me. I guess he's feeling pretty bad right now, like he's no longer of any use.
