In the blink of an eye, another half month has passed.
It's already early September. The recent heavy rains have allowed us to collect a lot of water, which has temporarily solved the water problem in the research institute. However, we don't know how long this problem will last.
I sat on the roof of the research institute, staring at everything in the distance.
Today is my shift, so I'm sitting here.
There are solar panels all around, and the electricity we use now is basically all from these solar panels.
Life has been peaceful lately. The little girl has fully adapted to life here and has become familiar with Lu Yun, Wen Guochao, and the others.
The conflict between Zhou Qingya and Li Jiaming was resolved half a month ago. When they were in Ninghai, Zhou Qingya's death was not intentional on Li Jiaming's part. Li Jiaming had no choice at the time; he was powerless to stop it when it happened.
He also felt guilty afterwards. Now that Zhou Qingya is fine, the two of them are basically fine except for talking less.
Actually, what I care about most are Fei Lichao and Sister Jing.
Although Sister Jing had experienced a lot of pain a long time ago, she had long since emerged from those shadows after going through so many hardships. Now she and Fei Lichao are having a great time chatting, and the two often take walks and talk together.
Lu Yun also kept talking to me about their relationship.
Lu Yun seemed very anxious, eager to see her sister get together with Fei Lichao.
However, matters of the heart are between the two of them, and outsiders have no say in them. Even though Lu Yun is Jing Jie's sister, she has no way to interfere in this matter.
After all, Fei Lichao and Sister Jing are both adults, and they understand matters of the heart better than Lu Yun.
So there's nothing to worry about.
Whenever Lu Yun bothers me, all I can say is to let them take their own course and not worry about it so much.
As for Song Muyuan and the other two, after living here for so long, they have gotten used to life here. They are very happy living here now, and I reckon they wouldn't be happy even if you kicked them out.
The research institute has complete facilities, which is much better than being homeless outside.
I sat on a chair on the rooftop, staring at everything in the distance.
The heat was intense.
There were no vehicles, no zombies, and everything was just as it had always been.
I remember when Jingjie and I left Jiajiang, we said we wanted to find a paradise to live in. I think this is the paradise I've been looking for.
My friends were all downstairs doing their own things. Life was peaceful, but not boring either.
Not long after, the door on the top floor opened.
I saw the little girl walking over with an umbrella and a bag in her hand, but I didn't know what was inside.
The little girl ran over with a grin, then held the umbrella over my head, plopped down on my lap, and asked with a laugh, "Brother Xiaonan, are you hot?"
I took off my hat, wiped the sweat from my forehead, and said, "Of course it's hot."
After hearing what I said, the little girl handed me the umbrella, then opened the bag and took out a can of beer and a bag of potato chips.
"Here, I secretly brought this up for you," the little girl said.
I took the beer and found it was still chilled. I didn't rush to drink it, but instead pressed the chilled beer against my cheek. The coolness from the beer can felt amazing.
Having an ice-cold beer like this on a hot day is absolutely amazing!
I laughed and said, "Awesome!"
The little girl smiled and said, "Brother Xiaonan, I'm good to you, aren't I?"
I nodded, "Yes, my girl is still the best to me."
Click!
I opened the beer and took a swig. The icy feeling went down my throat and into my body, and instantly I felt much better.
The chilled beer was taken from the refrigerator. It's a good thing we have electricity, so we basically keep all our food in the refrigerator to preserve it. Of course, there are also many drinks and alcoholic beverages. In the middle of summer, we really can't do without a refrigerator.
The research institute can't afford to turn on the air conditioning because the solar power generation alone is not enough to keep it running.
However, sometimes, just to be comfortable, we'll find a room, turn on the air conditioning, and then all of us will snuggle up inside to cool off.
However, such opportunities are rare.
To be honest, I don't like drinking, but this can of ice-cold beer is just delicious.
I put down the beer and saw the little girl staring blankly at the beer in my hand, her mouth slightly open, as if she really wanted to drink it.
Seeing her expression, I smiled and asked, "Want a drink?"
"Mmm-hmm-hmm-hmm-hmm!" The little girl nodded hurriedly.
I jokingly said, "The little girl isn't even an adult yet, why is she drinking alcohol?"
Hearing this, the little girl immediately pouted and became unhappy, then hit me and said, "Brother Xiaonan, you can't do this! I brought this wine! I want to drink it too!"
I laughed and took my hand away, but the girl wouldn't let it go and started grabbing my arm, trying to snatch it back.
I couldn't refuse her, so I laughed and said, "Okay, okay, you can have it."
"Hehe, Brother Xiaonan is the best." The little girl took the cold beer from my hand, her eyes lit up instantly, and then she took a sip straight from the bottle, and then her face scrunched up.
"Hahahaha." I burst out laughing when I saw her expression.
The little girl stuck out her tongue, hit me with her hand, and said, "It doesn't taste good!"
I laughed and said, "Of course the wine doesn't taste good."
"Here you go, Brother Xiaonan. I don't want to drink anymore, I'm going to get some water!" the little girl said as she ran back.
I took another sip of my beer, and shook my head as I watched her leave.
I held up the umbrella, and the scorching sun was blocked, making me feel much more comfortable instantly.
Looking at everything before me, I truly wish that none of this would change.
Because this is the life we've worked so hard to achieve, we can't let it disappear for any other reason.
In a few years, I think those zombies will all rot, and once they rot, they will probably die completely.
So as long as we can get through these few years, life should be better in the future than it is now.
"Hopefully, we can live here forever."
I finished my beer, and the can went from being ice-cold to room temperature. I could no longer feel anything when I held it.
With a forceful squeeze, I crushed the beer can and threw it outside.
With a clatter, the beer can fell to the ground.
Immediately, Song Muyuan's cursing voice came from below: "Damn it, which bastard threw that beer can? Come out here, or I'll beat you to death!"
Upon hearing this noise, I was momentarily stunned, then gave a wry smile.
