Zhong Jianzhou went down without any preparation. Judging from his confident look, he had been here many times and knew what was going on inside. He wasn't worried at all.
Su Mu, standing to the side, was getting a little anxious. "Hey, Zhong Jianzhou, be careful! Is it really okay to just go in like this? What if there's something inside?"
I ignored him. Zhong Jianzhou had already gone downstairs, so even if he heard what I said, he wouldn't be able to say anything.
After a long while, Zhong Jianzhou, who had gone downstairs, called out, "Come down, there's nothing wrong down there."
Hearing Zhong Jianzhou's voice, Su Mu breathed a sigh of relief and then climbed down ahead of me.
I shook my head and got off behind him.
Once I got down there, I found that it wasn't damp at all; in fact, it was quite dry.
Zhong Jianzhou held a flashlight, which allowed him to see the situation in the underground passage clearly. I took two flashlights out of my backpack, handed one to Su Mu, and kept the other for myself, then used them to illuminate the path ahead.
Is this where Zhong Jianzhou gets his medicine?
I looked around curiously. There was nothing in the dark passage, and the cement walls showed no signs of leaks, indicating that the waterproofing measures were very good.
However, these are not the main points.
Zhong Jianzhou kept walking forward, and Su Mu and I followed behind him.
Looking at the eerie place, Su Mu asked in a low voice, "Hey, you two, what are you doing here? How did you even know this place existed?"
I asked, puzzled, "Why are you speaking so softly?"
Su Mu was taken aback, and looking at the pitch-black surroundings, he said, "I'm just afraid there might be zombies!"
I shook my head and ignored him, following behind Zhong Jianzhou deeper and deeper inside.
Zhong Jianzhou was very familiar with this place, so he knew his way around easily.
Su Mu followed at the back, looking at us: "Hey, tell me! What exactly is this place?"
I found him annoying, so I said, "I don't know."
Su Mu asked in confusion, "You don't know? If you don't know, why are you here?"
I said, "If you're not interested, you can leave. You don't have to follow us."
Su Mu was displeased. "No way! I have to figure out what you two are up to! It's too much of a loss to just leave like this! There must be something here, otherwise you two wouldn't have come here for no reason."
I didn't stop him. Anyway, even if he saw those things later, he probably wouldn't know what they were for.
"Whatever."
Su Mu was very unhappy with my attitude, but he couldn't get angry right now, so he could only endure it and silently follow behind us.
We don't know how long we walked forward, we only know that we went down about twenty meters or so, and a few minutes later we came to an iron gate.
Zhong Jianzhou looked at me without saying anything. Clearly, because of Su Mu, he didn't want to reveal too much information.
Zhong Jianzhou's gaze made it clear that this was their destination.
I approached the iron gate and took a look. There was no rust on the gate, but it wasn't very new either. Obviously, this place had been there for many years, and I didn't know what it was used for before.
I pushed the iron gate, thinking it wouldn't open, but to my surprise, it opened easily after I used my strength.
I glanced at the frame of the iron gate and realized it was more than a meter thick. If the gate was locked, it would be impossible to push it open. I doubt even a regular bomb could break it.
After entering, there is a corridor.
After passing through the corridor, there is another door.
This door isn't the outer iron gate anymore; it's just an ordinary door.
After Zhong Jianzhou pushed open the door and entered, we used flashlights to illuminate the room.
Upon closer inspection, I discovered that this was a pharmacy. The walls were lined with cabinets, all of which were locked and contained a variety of items.
After Zhong Jianzhou led us in, I walked around the room and found that apart from these cabinets, there was nothing else. There wasn't even a chair or a table in the entire room.
Zhong Jian walked to the cabinet on the north side, pointed to the top drawer, and when I looked at it, I found a number on it.
41.
Then, while Su Mu was still looking around, Zhong Jianzhou quietly revealed his wrist. When I shone my flashlight on it, I saw the tattooed numbers on his wrist.
It's also 41.
It was obvious that this drawer belonged to him, and that he usually took his medicine from this drawer.
I pulled the drawer out and looked inside; it was empty, there was nothing there.
Besides his drawer, there were many other drawers around. I pulled them out one by one, but there was nothing inside.
Either these drawers were never filled to begin with, or the medicine in these drawers has already been taken away.
However, I'm more inclined to believe that these drawers were originally empty.
Because there are over a hundred drawers on the surrounding cabinets, if more than a hundred people come here to get their medicine, they're bound to bump into each other. But Zhong Jianzhou told me before that he's never run into anyone else when he comes here to get his medicine.
Therefore, many of the cabinets here are empty.
As for the other things in the cabinet, I'm not interested in them.
I glanced around; there was nothing of importance in the entire room.
I just don't know if Zhang Jianzhou came here to get medicine.
That's possible. It would take about a day to get from here to the central town, based on the travel time Zhang Jianzhou told me.
However, we can't be sure; what if there are other basements besides this one?
Perhaps Zhang Jianzhou went to another basement to get the medicine?
Anything is possible.
After looking around the entire basement, Su Mu looked at the two of us and asked with disappointment, "So, this is the place you two are looking for?"
I nodded and said, "Yes."
Su Mu asked, "What's here that's so important that you two are keeping it a secret?"
I shrugged and said, "There's nothing here to begin with. We weren't trying to keep anything from you. We were just bored, so we came out for a stroll. You're the one who overthought things and insisted on coming with us."
Su Mu rolled his eyes at us.
Then he shook his head and cursed, "You two are crazy for working part-time jobs. You came all this way just to see this empty basement."
He asked for his head, then turned and left.
Zhong Jianzhou and I exchanged a glance and both breathed a sigh of relief.
Su Mu's arrival was an accident in itself. Now that he no longer has any doubts, we don't need to worry about anything.
I've looked here too, and there really isn't much there. To be honest, I'm a little disappointed. I thought there would be news about that research institute, but there's nothing here.
