I was taken aback for a moment, then asked, "Who exactly did this?"
Zhang Lincai shook his head, "I don't know, but I'm sure it was done by a team."
"Why?"
“Isn’t that obvious? More than two hundred raiders, do you think a few people can kill them all? Someone is definitely deliberately provoking Central Town, trying to declare war on Central Town using this method,” Zhang Lincai said with a furrowed brow.
I let out a bitter laugh. Knowing the truth, I really didn't know what to say. I wondered what Zhang Lin would do if he found out that all these people were actually killed by the same person.
Zhang Lincai said, "Just listen to this and don't go around spreading rumors. Anyway, it has nothing to do with you."
I smiled wryly and said, "I reckon many of the raiders outside already know about this without me having to go out and tell them."
Zhang Lincai's face was full of bitterness as he said, "That's true. How could such a thing be kept secret? There are so many people in the central town. If everyone keeps talking about it, it probably won't be long before everyone knows about it."
I said, "So what if they know? It's already happened. Rather than keeping it from them and making them suspicious, it's better to be open and transparent. That way, there won't be any conflicts."
Zhang Lincai said, "It's not that easy. If this matter is really announced, I estimate that many raiders will be unwilling to join the central town."
I was at a loss for words, since what Zhang Lincai said was completely the opposite of what Zhou Liang said.
Zhou Liang told me that he did this mainly to warn the raiders and then get them to join the central town. But Zhang Lincai is saying the exact opposite.
I don't understand this matter either. Anyway, it has nothing to do with me, so whatever the outcome, it won't affect me.
"Dr. Lu, Dr. Lu."
Just then, a man ran into the bar. He looked unfamiliar, but he seemed to recognize me. As soon as he saw me, he ran over and exclaimed, "Dr. Lu, I've finally found you! Quick, quick, come with me! Something's happened outside!"
I frowned at the flustered guy and asked, "What's wrong? What happened?"
The guy said, "Someone outside has fainted and is vomiting blood. I don't know what happened. You should go and take a look."
Zhang Lin and I exchanged a glance.
"Let's go take a look," Zhang Lincai said hurriedly.
I followed that anxious guy outside to the arena, where I found a large crowd gathered, though I had no idea what they were looking at.
"Make way, make way, Dr. Lu is here," the guy said.
The crowd of onlookers immediately parted to make way for me.
When I went inside, I saw a person lying on the ground, spitting blood, his face was deathly pale, and he looked incredibly weak.
When I saw this, I took out a mask and gloves from my pocket, got closer, and touched his forehead and cheeks. I found they were very hot. Then I examined him with a stethoscope.
Zhang Lincai came to my side and asked, "What happened?"
I turned to look at him and said, "I'm not sure either. Let's get a few people to carry him to the infirmary. I suspect it's a bit serious."
"What's wrong?"
Instead of answering him directly, I turned to the people surrounding me and asked, "Who among you is his friend?"
“Me, me.” A bald man stepped forward.
I asked, "Tell me, did he eat any dead livestock before? Like chickens or ducks?"
The bald man thought for a moment, then nodded and said, "Yes, yes, he ate a chicken that had just died a week ago."
Did he eat it alone?
“Me too,” the bald man said.
I frowned and said, "Take him to the infirmary right away, I'll come back to find you later."
"Oh, oh." The bald man hurriedly pulled up the guy who was lying on the ground, half-conscious, and struggled to walk towards the infirmary.
"What exactly happened?" Zhang Lincai asked again.
I glanced at the people around me, pulled Zhang Lin aside, and whispered, "It could be bird flu."
"What!" Zhang Lincai exclaimed in surprise.
I said, “I’m not sure right now, but it seems like it based on his condition. If you don’t want the disease to spread, it’s best to isolate everyone here and ask them one by one to make sure they haven’t been in contact with those two people. If they have, send them directly to the medical room.”
Zhang Lincai said, "But if it's bird flu, is it okay for you to go to the infirmary like this?"
I said, "They'll probably panic if I don't go. Don't worry, I have a plan. You should go do it now."
Zhang Lincai nodded: "Okay, I understand."
I felt a little helpless watching Zhang Lincai go and inform others.
Bird flu is something that used to cause panic, but I never expected it to happen here. If you get infected, given the current conditions, there's definitely no way to treat it; you'll only die.
A short while later, I saw Zhang Lin lead his men to bring all the raiders under control and begin questioning them one by one.
I arrived at the door of the infirmary and saw Baldy and his companions fussing around inside.
When the bald man saw me, he hurriedly smiled and said, "Doctor, doctor, please hurry and take a look at my brother."
I glanced at the guy lying on the bed; he was having trouble breathing.
I took a pill from the medicine cabinet, handed it to the bald man, and said, "Give him this pill first, and if anything happens, come and let me know immediately."
"Okay, okay." The bald man took the medicine and immediately went over to give it to the patient.
After I left the infirmary, Zhang Lin came over and asked me, "How are things? How are those two inside?"
I said, "I don't think the one who collapsed is going to make it. I can't save him. As for the bald guy, I think he's been infected too. Let's observe him for another day or two. I'll let you know if there's any change."
Zhang Lincai frowned and said, "You just said this is bird flu, which is very contagious?"
I nodded. "Yes."
Zhang Lincai said, "Why don't we just kill them both and burn their bodies? Would that stop the infection from spreading?"
I was stunned; I hadn't expected Zhang Lincai to be so ruthless.
I frowned and said, "Let's see. If it really doesn't work, then do as you said and get rid of them before the infection spreads."
Zhang Lincai nodded, "Okay, I'll have people prepare now, so we won't be caught off guard."
I gave a wry smile. Sure enough, I'd forgotten. He was from Central Town. What did it matter if one or two raiders were sacrificed for the safety of Central Town?
