(This is the second update today. I said at noon that there would only be two updates, and I will continue tomorrow.)
After they brought me out, the captain punched me in the stomach twice more, and the pain was so intense that I didn't even have the strength to resist.
Where are they taking me? Are they really taking me to do an experiment?
I felt uneasy, uncertain, and terrified.
If they are truly confident that they can escape once they are on the lab table conducting the experiment, can they really do it themselves?
I'm not sure.
In a panic, I suddenly reached into my pocket for the scalpel I had put there just in case. Now, this scalpel was my only chance!
Should we take action?
Before long, they dragged me to a door.
Could the lab be inside that door? If I don't act now, I'm definitely dead!
I steeled myself and was about to make my move when the door opened in front of me. Before I could even take out the scalpel, they shoved my arm, and I fell into the office.
The office door was not closed, but left wide open, and the soldiers outside were guarding the door and did not come in.
The room wasn't what I expected. There were no hospital beds, no bedspans, and no one in protective suits. There was a bed in the corner of the room, surrounded by bookshelves and a desk, with a computer on the desk that wasn't turned on.
In front of the computer sat a person wearing a white coat.
What exactly is this place? Could it be this middle-aged man's office?
Puzzled, I glanced at the soldiers outside who hadn't come in, stood up from the ground, and looked at the middle-aged man sitting in the chair in front of me. His back was to me, and I felt that his back looked somewhat familiar.
"I really didn't expect that you're still alive, Xiao Lu."
The moment the middle-aged man spoke, I froze on the spot, in disbelief.
"Zhang, Zhang Jianzhou!" I frowned and stared at the other person's back.
Zhang Jianzhou turned around with a smile: "I taught you for a while, so you should at least call me teacher."
"Teacher, you bastard!" I cursed inwardly. Looking at his face, I wanted nothing more than to go up and slap him.
If it weren't for him, Zhou Yang wouldn't have died!
Zhang Jianzhou stood up and stood in front of me: "Are you surprised that I'm here?"
I frowned, thinking back to when Liu Neng was shot and killed in the hospital. I had suspected something, but I didn't think much of it.
I did not answer him.
Zhang Jianzhou said, "I was very surprised when I saw you on the surveillance footage. You were still alive! In the hospital, I closed the door and thought you must be dead, but I never expected to see you here. Don't you think this is fate?"
“No,” I said with a gloomy face.
Zhang Jianzhou patted my shoulder with a smile, "Don't say that. It's fate that we can meet again. In this world that has become such a horrible place, it's really rare to find someone you know. So don't be afraid, I won't kill you."
I clenched my fist.
He continued, "If you don't believe in fate, I'll take you to meet someone. I believe you'll be very grateful to me after you meet her."
I frowned and asked, "Who?"
He said, "No rush, we'll know when we see it."
He immediately walked out the door, and I followed behind him with the scalpel in my hand.
The soldiers outside the gate followed closely behind us as soon as we came out.
I really wanted to kill Zhang Jianzhou to avenge Zhou Yang, but the soldiers around me would definitely not let me do it.
We continued on our way.
Zhang Jianzhou said to the person next to him, "I can say that I am lucky to be here, and I can say that I am working here to benefit the rest of humanity."
"What do you mean?" I didn't understand.
Zhang Jianzhou said, "Let me put it this way. I mentioned it to you in the hospital before. The reason the world is in this terrible state is because of the Erin virus. Since the Erin virus is a virus, there must be ways to solve it. Back then, SARS and H1N1 caused a huge uproar, but they were all resolved."
"But it was stopped quickly when it first broke out. Now, it's probably like this all over the world. How can we stop it now?" I asked, puzzled.
Zhang Jianzhou spread his hands and said, "Start with living people."
I was taken aback; what he said made some sense. The fact that we haven't turned into those monsters means that there's something within us that we don't know about, actively resisting the virus, or that we haven't been infected at all.
"So you're having them go around capturing living people and then studying them?" I asked, frowning.
Zhang Jianzhou scoffed, "There's always a price to pay for restoring the world to normal."
I retorted, "But don't you think this is going too far? You're killing someone!"
Zhang Jianzhou stared at me with mockery in his eyes. "If killing a few people could restore the world to normal, would you be willing?"
“I…” I didn’t know how to answer.
Overall, this is a very worthwhile deal, but...
Zhang Jianzhou shook his head: "Look, you agree yourself. We are both doctors. Although you are still an intern, I have seen your grades. You have a solid foundation and have never made a mistake in the surgeries you have performed with the attending physician. If you are willing, you can come with me here to study the Ehrlich virus. I think we will be able to figure it out one day."
My heart was pounding, and I didn't know how to answer.
Not long after, we arrived at the door of a laboratory, where he stopped.
"We've arrived." He swiped his card to open the lab door, and we went inside.
There was a large glass room in the laboratory. Inside the glass room, there was a bed and a desk. There were many books on the desk, and a person was lying on the bed, someone I knew very well.
Zhang Jianzhou walked to the glass room, knocked on it, and said, "Get up."
The person lying in bed turned over, and I was stunned the moment she stood up.
"Wu Shuang!" I arrived in front of the glass room and looked at the person inside.
Wu Shuang seemed surprised to see me here. The moment she saw me, she covered her mouth with both hands, stared at me in disbelief, and tears streamed down her face.
She came up to me, and we gazed at each other through the glass.
I didn't know what to say, and I think she didn't know what to say either.
Zhang Jianzhou smiled from the side: "It seems you two are quite familiar with each other. Here, I'll give you five minutes to catch up. Oh, by the way, Xiao Lu, don't even think about letting her out, because if you do, you'll both die, and you'll both die a very, very terrible death."
"So, you must not act impulsively."
After Zhang Jianzhou finished speaking, he led his men out of the laboratory and waited outside.
Once the door closed, only Wu Shuang and I remained in the entire laboratory.
Tears suddenly welled up in my eyes, and I said, "Long time no see."
