Chapter 6 Drawing Lots

(That's all for today's update. We'll continue tomorrow.)

"I don't know, I didn't see any living people," Zhang Jianzhou said, shaking his head. I noticed that he was trembling all over; clearly, he was still afraid.

"I want to hear the specifics, Xiao Lu, you tell me," Liu Neng asked me.

I looked down at the ground and shook my head, saying, "I don't know either. Just now... we came from the emergency room, and everyone in the emergency room turned into those... monsters. I don't know about outside either, but, but..."

"But what?" Liu Neng asked.

"However, before that, Zhou Yang received a call from his girlfriend saying that there were also these man-eating monsters at school." Thinking of this, I suddenly felt like making a call.

Upon hearing this, Liu Neng nodded and said, "It seems that monsters have appeared not only in the hospital, but everywhere outside. The police didn't answer the phone when we called them before, so something must have really happened."

"What should we do then?" the nurse asked worriedly.

"I don't know," Liu Neng said, shaking his head.

I looked at Liu Neng and said, "Dr. Liu, could I borrow your phone for a moment? I want to make a call."

Liu Neng looked at me, didn't seem to mind, and took out his phone and handed it to me.

Luckily, I remembered my mother's phone number, otherwise I wouldn't know what to do. After dialing, I only heard the "beep-beep" ringing sound. I waited for a long time, but my mother did not answer the phone.

I started to panic.

Ultimately, the call didn't go through. But just when I was about to give up, I remembered someone's number and immediately dialed it. The dial tone sounded again.

You absolutely must answer! You absolutely must answer!

"Hello?"

A moment later, Su Ming's voice came through the receiver, and I was thrilled.

"Hello, Su Ming, it's me, Xiao Nan!"

"Xiaonan! Are you alright?"

"I...I'm fine. I just tried calling my mom but couldn't get through. What should I do? Do you know where my mom is?" I asked anxiously.

"Xiaonan, I'm sorry, I didn't know. However, when the army came to evacuate the crowd, many people were already moved to the safe zone. Don't worry, I will go find your mother."

I wanted to say thank you, but Su Ming didn't give me a chance to speak. "Xiaonan, listen to me. I don't know what your situation is right now, but you must remember, no matter what, you have to live. Even if it means killing someone, you have to live! This world has completely changed. Don't trust anyone else; you can only trust yourself, understand? No matter what, live on. I hope we'll meet again someday..."

Su Ming was speaking when the call suddenly ended.

I said anxiously, "Hello, hello, Su Ming?"

There was no sound on the other end of the phone, only the mechanical beeping of dial tone.

I handed the phone back to Dr. Liu, who glanced at it, frowned, and said, "The signal is gone. It looks like there's a problem with the cell tower too."

I leaned against the wall, stunned, my mind filled with Su Ming's words.

Ever since Su Ming called me three days ago and said those inexplicable things, I've felt that he must know something. Now it seems that he knew all along that the world would change!

To survive? But how am I supposed to survive?

...

Seven or eight hours later, it was already one o'clock in the afternoon. I leaned against the corner of the wall and thought about many things in a daze. I thought about the things that happened between Zhou Yang and me at school, about Xiao Xiao, about my parents, about Su Ming. I fell asleep more than once during this time.

There was no way around it, I was just too exhausted. After working 24 hours straight, plus the blow of Zhou Yang's death, I drifted off to sleep the moment I relaxed.

When I woke up again, it was already 2 PM.

No one came to rescue us, no army appeared, no police appeared, no one at all!

Only the monsters outside kept roaring, making us afraid to make a sound.

The signal and network are now cut off, and there is no food or water.

I haven't eaten or drunk anything for over ten hours.

My stomach was growling with hunger, and my lips were cracked and dry.

I stuck out my tongue and licked my lips, opened my eyes, and glanced at the people in the ward. I found that everyone's condition was about the same.

Liu Neng sat down on the ground next to me, looked at all of us, and asked, "Are you hungry?"

I nodded.

"Hungry," Shen Lin said directly.

Zhang Jianzhou and the nurse both nodded.

Liu Neng stood up, swallowed hard, and said, "I know where there's food, but it'll be risky."

When I first heard this, I was very excited, but as soon as he finished speaking, I knew what place he was talking about.

"Where can we find something to eat?" Shen Lin asked excitedly.

"Shh." Liu Neng gestured for him to be quiet, then continued, "There are vending machines near the lab entrance, but there are probably a lot of monsters there. That's why I said we need to take a risk."

After he said that, no one dared to utter a sound.

Everyone present knew how terrifying those monsters outside were; one wrong move and they could be eaten.

Rather than risking my life to go out and find food, I'd rather stay here and starve.

Everyone thinks that way.

Seeing that no one else was moving, Liu Neng was too lazy to move either, so he sat down again and waited.

Time passed second by second, and as time went on, the rumbling of our stomachs grew louder and louder. It wasn't just me; Shen Lin, the nurse, Liu Neng, and Zhang Jianzhou were all experiencing the same thing.
