Chapter 64 Escape from Death

(Chapter 2 is here. As always, please recommend and add to your favorites.)

We escaped Tiande Pharmaceutical Company without any soldiers chasing us. We followed Pu Weichao closely, running towards a more distant place. Along the way, we killed several monsters and finally arrived at a mobile phone store.

After entering, I saw that there were quite a few people in the mobile phone store. I roughly counted about eleven people.

They must be the people who were arrested and taken to the pharmaceutical company before? I didn't expect they actually escaped.

However, after observing, I noticed someone was missing. I looked at Pu Weichao and asked, "Where's Gao Feng?"

Both Pu Weichao and Shen Dian looked grim and were very sad.

Pu Weichao said, "Gao Feng is dead. When we were captured, someone came out to ambush Gao Feng. As a result, Gao Feng was shot while protecting the woman. Later, he was caught by zombies when he tried to escape."

Protect that woman? My gaze fell on Ke Jiamin. I saw tear tracks on her face, and I couldn't tell if she was frightened or genuinely heartbroken.

Pu Weichao sighed, his face full of regret, and said, "Alas, it's all my fault. If my plan hadn't been so detailed, Gao Feng wouldn't have died."

Chen patted him on the shoulder and said, "Don't overthink it. Nobody could have predicted that Lao Gao would die."

I didn't know how to offer words of comfort.

At that moment, among the eleven survivors, a middle-aged man with a beer belly walked up to us and asked in a low voice, "Did you come here specifically to rescue us?"

Pu Weichao and I exchanged a glance, and Pu Weichao said, "No."

"Oh." The middle-aged man nodded, then glanced at the guns in our hands and said, "How about this? I'll give you 100,000 yuan, and you escort me to my home. How about that? My home isn't far, just by Longhu Lake. Are you interested?"

Pu Weichao scoffed and said, "I think you've got it wrong. Do you even know what the situation is?"

The middle-aged man looked at us suspiciously and asked, "I'll give you money, and you'll take me home. Is there a problem with that? Don't you want the money?"

Pu Weichao rolled his eyes, shook his head, and walked to the side, too lazy to explain.

The middle-aged man was taken aback, then frowned and said angrily, "What kind of attitude is this!"

I looked at the middle-aged man who seemed unaware of the situation and asked, "When were you arrested?"

The middle-aged man thought for a moment and said, "It's been a long time, almost a month."

A month?!

I was surprised. Just a month ago, the world was perfectly fine. Could it be that Tiande Pharmaceutical Company had already realized that the world would change, so they started arresting people?

I couldn't figure it out, so I stopped thinking about it.

Pu Weichao then said, "Xiaonan, Brother Chen, let's go."

Settle down and keep up with Pu Weichao's pace.

Ke Jiamin, who was in the mobile phone store, looked at me with a pitiful expression in her eyes. I nodded to her, and she showed gratitude in her eyes. She jogged over to my side and caught up with us.

I went up to Pu Weichao and asked, "What will happen to the people in the mobile phone store if we leave?"

Pu Weichao shook his head and said, "We can't save that many people. Besides, half of them don't know what's happening outside. If we let them follow us rashly, they'll only be a burden to us. I don't want to die because of them."

"Besides, we're not saints. If they want to survive, they'll have to rely on themselves."

I sighed and didn't say anything more. Pu Weichao was right. None of us are saints, and there's no need for us to sacrifice our lives for people who have nothing to do with us.

After walking for three or four minutes, we returned to where the pickup truck had been.

There were four of us when we arrived.

When we went back, there were five of us. Gao Feng was dead, but Wu Shuang came back, and there was also Ke Jiamin.

But I know that given Wu Shuang's current condition, he won't live much longer.

Although I was happy to rescue her, the thought of the life she gave birth to still makes my heart ache.

After we got on the bus, Wu Shuang seemed to sense my mood. She held my hand, her eyes were expressive and captivating, like crescent moons, and the smile on her face could melt away any unhappiness.

She rested her head on my shoulder and said in a voice only I could hear, "Don't overthink it, okay?"

"Mmm." I put my arm around her shoulder and let her lean against me.

I don't want to overthink it, but you're going to die!

I closed my eyes, pressed my cheek against her hair, felt the question emanating from her, and tightened the distance between us.

To be honest, I don't know if I've fallen for Wu Shuang. When we escaped from the hospital, we held hands the whole time and never let go. In the air-raid shelter, we worried about each other.

I'm not sure what my feelings for Wu Shuang are, but they're a bit higher than friendship. This shared experience of life and death has created a tacit understanding between us, a mutual comfort and need.

I always feel very safe and secure when the other person is by my side.

This may not be love, but it's more beautiful than love.

"Um, can I ask you a question?" Ke Jiamin, who was also enjoying the breeze in the carriage, suddenly asked.

I looked up, puzzled, and asked, "What do you want to ask?"

Ke Jiamin's eyes darted around as she asked, "What I want to ask is, where are you going? I just noticed that we've already reached the mountainous area, so I wanted to ask."

Hearing her question, I suddenly remembered what she had told me before, and immediately asked, "I remember you told me before that you had a friend waiting for you to go back to the hotel in the Linshan District?"
