Chapter 71 This Day, This Moment

(The third update is here. This is the final chapter of the third episode. Wu Shuang is leaving tomorrow.)

I couldn't sleep that night.

Wu Shuang didn't let me into her room again. I stayed outside her door all night, thinking a lot.

It wasn't until around 5:40 the next morning, when Pu Weichao came to call me with a flashlight, that I came to my senses.

It's almost six o'clock, and it's still dark outside.

"Don't tell me you didn't sleep all night?" The beam of Pu Weichao's flashlight shone into my eyes, making me feel uncomfortable.

"Okay." I nodded and stood up from the doorway.

"You've been keeping watch here all night?" Pu Weichao asked.

“Yes, Wu Shuang won’t let me in,” I said.

Pu Weichao frowned, understanding what Wu Shuang meant, and asked, "Are you sure Wu Shuang is still...?"

"Still alive." I blurted out in an instant.

Pu Weichao sighed and said, "Then I'll go outside and wait for you, and check the situation outside for you."

Thanks.

After Pu Weichao left, I quietly opened Wu Shuang's door. The candle inside hadn't burned out yet. When I heard Wu Shuang breathing near the window, I breathed a sigh of relief.

I lifted the blanket, not afraid of waking her, picked up her hands, pulled her up, and carried her on my back. To prevent her from feeling cold, I also put another blanket over her. This process was difficult and took some time.

Stepping outside, I felt a chill.

It was pitch black outside the house, so I followed the beam of Pu Weichao's flashlight.

Upon reaching the other person, Pu Weichao said, "It's quite safe outside. I'll lead the way, so stay close."

"Um."

Following Pu Weichao's footsteps, Wu Shuang remained asleep on my back, undisturbed.

It's not that I don't want to wake up, it's just that I don't have the strength to wake up.

Actually, when I was waiting outside the door, I was really afraid that she would leave in her sleep. I wanted to go in and check on her several times, but I held back in the end.

Wu Shuang wouldn't let me into the room, and her meaning was quite clear: she was afraid I would see her suddenly stop breathing.

After walking for about half a minute, Pu Weichao led us to a good spot to watch the sunrise. It wasn't a mountaintop, but it faced due east, so we could see the sun just as it rose.

I put Wu Shuang down and wrapped the blanket around her.

Pu Weichao said, "I'll wait for you somewhere further away."

"Okay, thanks."

"No need." Pu Weichao left me a flashlight and then left.

I sat down next to Wu Shuang and let her lean on me.

A moment later, she seemed to wake up.

"You're awake," I called softly.

"Ugh, it's so cold..." Wu Shuang shivered and snuggled into my arms.

I wrapped the blanket tightly around her and whispered in her ear, "I've brought you to see the sunrise."

Wu Shuang groggily opened her eyes, looked up, and when she saw me, a pale smile appeared on her lips: "Where am I?"

"Up on the mountain, the sun will come out soon," I said with a smile.

"Really?" she said incredulously.

“Yes, really,” I said.

She closed her eyes again and said, "Tell me when the sun comes out. I want to sleep a little longer."

"Okay, sure."

I don't know when the sun will rise, but it should be soon.

I sat on the mountain. The sun hadn't risen yet, and it was really cold, but it didn't matter as long as Wu Shuang could see the sun rise.

I don't know how long I waited, but when a sliver of light appeared in the east, I whispered in Wu Shuang's ear, "Wake up, you lazybones, the sun is out."

"Are you out yet...?"

Wu Shuang murmured, "So good..."

I touched her cheek, saw the smile on her face and her eyes that remained closed, looked up, stared at the first hint of dawn in the east, and said, "Yes, it's really nice."

The moment the sun rises, its rays are dazzling, and the entire earth seems to awaken from darkness and revive in this boundless light.

I wish we were all children, a carefree group of children.

Go home. Once you're home, the pain will be over.

...

At 7:30 in the morning, I carried Wu Shuang back to the scenic area.

During the journey, I noticed something: Wu Shuang did not turn into a monster. After her aura disappeared, she became completely quiet. I waited for a very long time, but she did not turn into a monster.

I don't understand why, but I'm too lazy to think about it.

The deceased are gone, but the living remain.

In the morning, everyone helped to hold a simple funeral for Wu Shuang. We buried her in the place where the sun rises, hoping that she can see the rising sun every day from now on.

Everyone came to comfort me, and I accepted their words, but I didn't listen to many of their advice.

Wu Shuang has already left, and the journey ahead is about to begin.

I didn't have much of an appetite at noon. After the funeral, I went back to Wu Shuang's room, sat on the floor by the bed, and the men's watch she had left behind was still on the bedside table.

I wish that if I turned my head, Wu Shuang would still be lying in bed taking a nap.

But that has become a pipe dream.

"Buzzing—"

Suddenly, a cell phone vibrated from the bed.

I turned my head and reached under my pillow to take out my phone. I gave it to Wu Shuang yesterday, but she hasn't given it back to me.

Why is my phone ringing right now?

I held the phone up to my eyes and saw a memo message on the screen.

The message was titled: "To the silly guy I like."
