Dong Wen chuckled: "We are indeed not friends, but we can become friends. If you are really homeless, I don't mind taking you in. You can live with us, and perhaps we will become friends then."
I feigned surprise and said, "Really? You really want us to live with you?"
"Yes, are you willing?"
I chuckled and said, "Don't you think your idea is a bit naive? Do you know who we are? What if we're bad guys? What if we gain your trust and then kill you all?"
Dong Wen smiled and said, "I believe you won't do that."
I nodded and said, "Yes, we certainly won't do that, but even if you're willing to trust us, I won't trust you. Are you done asking? If you're done, can we leave now?"
Dong Wen pushed up his glasses and said, "I have a few more questions for you. You don't mind, do you?"
I said, "No problem, go ahead and ask."
Dong Wen said, "How long do you plan to stay here? To be honest, I'm quite worried about you."
I said, "It shouldn't be too long."
Dong Wen's lips curled slightly as he said, "So you're going back later?"
I instinctively wanted to reply, but upon closer inspection, I suddenly realized that the other person's words seemed off, as if they were trying to trick me into revealing information!
I said, "It's not really going back, it's just that I won't be coming here again. Anyway, I didn't find anything in Mingzhu City, so I'm basically too lazy to come here again."
Dong Wen said, "You really are quite cautious."
I asked, puzzled, "Is it alright? Is it?"
Dong Wen said, "One last question: are you raiders?"
I frowned; this guy's questions were always malicious.
Song Muyuan panicked when he heard this question.
I glanced at him and said, looking out the car window, "What business is it of yours whether we're raiders or not?"
Dong Wen said, "It doesn't matter. I just want to figure it out. You just need to answer me. This is the last question. Once you answer it, I will let you leave."
I said, "No."
After a long silence, Dong Wen nodded and said, "Okay, you can go now."
I didn't rush to let Fu Chen drive away because I didn't know what tricks Dong Wen was up to. First, he inexplicably stopped us, then asked us some strange questions, and now he's telling us to leave without doing anything. What does that mean? He's messing with us.
I stared at the other person through the car window and said, "No rush. Since you said you have no ill intentions towards us, okay, can I ask you a few questions as well?"
Dong Wen chuckled. "What, you think I can't believe you? Do you think I'd ambush you after you leave?"
I said, "It's not impossible. What if it happens? Don't you think?"
Dong Wen nodded: "Yes, indeed. Okay then, ask whatever you want to ask."
I said, "Alright, let me ask you, how long have you been living here?"
Dong Wen frowned and said, "We've been living here since the beginning, and it's almost September now. How long do you think we've been living here?"
I then asked, "Didn't you leave here and go outside to take a look?"
Dong Wen said, "I don't think it's necessary."
I chuckled and said, "Okay, I've finished asking my questions. Goodbye forever."
Dong Wen didn't answer me, he just waved his hand and smiled slightly at me.
I couldn't be bothered to think about what his smile meant. After closing the car window, I said, "Fu Chen, drive, let's get away from here."
Fu Chen was stunned for a moment, then said, "Really... can we go now?"
I said, "Let's go, they won't stop us anymore."
Fu Chen nervously shifted gears again, then stepped on the gas, turned the steering wheel, made a U-turn, and left.
Song Muyuan and Zhou Jie kept their guns pointed out the window, ready to shoot at Dong Wen and his group if they made any move.
They didn't relax until we left the intersection and were far away from that road.
Song Muyuan breathed a sigh of relief and cursed, "Damn it, that scared me to death! I thought they were going to kill me."
To be honest, I was terrified. If I hadn't forced myself to talk to them, I would have been ready to shoot them right then and there. Luckily, they didn't seem to have any ill intentions, otherwise, the four of us wouldn't have been able to kill them.
Song Muyuan pulled out a pack of unopened cigarettes from his pocket. He tore off the plastic wrap, opened the lid, ripped off the inner paper seal, took out two cigarettes, handed one to me, and then lit one for himself, taking a deep drag.
After smelling the cigarette, Fu Chen said, "Boss, can I have one?"
Song Muyuan handed him a cigarette and lit it. Fu Chen slowed down and took a deep drag. He had been scared pretty badly just now.
Zhou Jie swallowed hard, said nothing, and took a cigarette from Song Muyuan, slowly smoking it.
I opened the window, and the wind outside rushed in, dispersing the smell of smoke in the car.
Song Muyuan looked at me and said, "Brother Lu, what do we do next? Keep looking or what?"
I said, "Let's keep looking. Just wander around the outer perimeter. Don't go inside for now. I estimate that there are definitely more than just Dong Wen's family in Mingzhu City. There must be quite a few survivors inside."
Song Muyuan nodded: "You're right, let's wander around outside and find as much as we can."
For the next few hours, we wandered around the outskirts of Mingzhu City. We didn't find much food, but we did manage to find a lot of gasoline from the wrecked cars.
I kept testing them along the way, observing their reactions, but the three of them remained silent and didn't show any other intentions towards me.
Around four o'clock in the afternoon, we drove back.
At 5 o'clock sharp, we returned to the research institute.
The research institute remained unchanged, with no activity and no one else discovering it.
...
After dinner, Sister Jing came to my room to find me.
After closing the door and making sure no one was eavesdropping, Jing asked me, "So, do the three of them have any problems?"
I shook my head and said, "There's no problem. I tested them all afternoon, and they didn't make a move at all. Sometimes I even hinted at it to them, but they really didn't attack me."
Sister Jing asked doubtfully, "So, does that mean we can trust them?"
I shook my head and said, "No rush. They've only been here for half a month. Let's observe them and see what they do next. If they don't, then trust them. If they do, then we'll stick to the old rules."
