(The second update is here. The next two updates will probably be a bit late, but the promised four updates will definitely come.)
Chen Yefei looked like he was recalling something, and then said to me, "Dr. Lu, I remember now. After he fell into a coma, we examined him and saw a wound on his ankle, but it wasn't a bite wound, so we didn't pay much attention to it."
I lifted the blanket beside his feet and looked at his ankles. On his left leg, I saw some healed wounds that did look like abrasions.
Such a wound doesn't prove anything.
"Are there any other wounds?" I asked.
Chen Yefei shook his head: "That's all."
There were no other wounds, but this guy suddenly went into a coma, which puzzled me a bit.
The first thing we can rule out is that he wasn't bitten by a zombie, which means that this guy didn't become like this because of the zombie virus.
If it's not due to a zombie virus, then it could be due to other reasons or other illnesses.
Unfortunately, we don't have the means to do so now. In the past, we might have been able to find out the cause through medical means, but now it's impossible to find out the cause by relying solely on external diagnoses.
I said, "If that's the case, there's nothing I can do to help you. I'm sorry."
Chen Yefei looked a little disappointed. "Is there no other way? Why don't you check it again?"
I said, "There's nothing I can do. First of all, I don't know why he fell into a coma. And things are different now than before. We don't have the equipment to do blood tests, X-rays, or any other tests. We can't determine anything just by looking at his external condition. So I'm sorry, I have no way to help him with this."
Chen Yefei gave a wry smile, looked at the man on the bed, and said, "Well, I didn't have much hope for this anyway. As long as he can keep living, it doesn't matter what. At least he's still alive, don't you think?"
"Yes, as long as you're alive, there's hope," I said.
Chen Yefei smiled and said, "Alright then, Dr. Lu, let's leave it at that. If you have any thoughts about the future, you can let me know. As for today, why don't you stay here for the night and wait until your friend is feeling better before leaving tomorrow?"
Sister Jing hasn't woken up yet, and her condition isn't suitable for traveling. She's lost too much blood and definitely needs to rest.
Moreover, this neighborhood is very safe and has everything you need, so staying here for the night is the best choice.
"Thank you for your help."
"No trouble at all, just consider it making friends," Chen Yefei said.
And so, we settled down at Chen Yefei's place.
Chen Yefei asked Li Jiaxin to arrange our rooms. There didn't seem to be many people in this community, so there were many empty rooms.
Although we've settled in, we dare not relax in the slightest.
...
Around 4 PM.
I lay on my bed in my room, staring at the ceiling, my mind a bit of a mess, not really sure what I was thinking about.
Knock knock knock.
A knock sounded on the door, followed by Chen Yefei's voice from outside, "Dr. Lu, is it convenient for you to come in?"
I sat up in bed and said, "Come in."
Chen Yefei pushed open the door and entered, holding a bottle of beer and two glasses. He asked, "Want a drink?"
I nodded. I hadn't had beer in a long time, and I was starting to crave it.
Chen Yefei used the key in his hand to pry open the bottle cap, filled two cups, and handed them to me.
I didn't rush to drink it; I was a little dazed with the beer on my hands.
Seeing my state, Chen Yefei laughed and said, "What, are you afraid I'll poison you?"
I laughed and said, "No, I was just thinking about some things from the past."
"What is it? Would you mind telling me about it?" Chen Yefei asked.
I said, "It's not really about convenience or inconvenience, just some trivial things from the past. I was doing my internship at the hospital back then, and I had a friend named Zhou Yang. We were staying together in the hospital's break room. One night, around 3 a.m., after we finished our shift, we didn't have anything to do, and Zhou Yang said he wanted to drink, so we went out to find some. We originally wanted to go to a bar, but it was too far, and we didn't want to waste the money, so we just wanted to find a place nearby to have some late-night snacks and drinks."
"That night, for some reason, we wandered around two streets near the hospital, but all the usual late-night snack shops were closed. We didn't know where to find alcohol. In the end, Zhou Yang even called his girlfriend and asked her to buy some and bring it over."
I paused here, wondering if Jiang Xiaoxiao was still alive.
"And then?" Chen Yefei asked curiously.
I chuckled. "And then, we waited at the hospital for ages, but Zhou Yang's girlfriend never showed up. Then the hospital sent a message saying we had to work overtime, so we had no choice but to rush back to the hospital to work overtime. Because of this, Zhou Yang's girlfriend and he had a fight for almost half a month. Looking back now, it was quite funny."
Chen Yefei nodded, "It is indeed quite fun. What about your friend?"
My expression darkened, and I said, "He's dead. He died on the morning of the second day after the zombie outbreak, trying to save me."
Chen Yefei was taken aback and said, "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to."
I shook my head, not paying attention to it, and said, "It's been several months since the zombie outbreak started. I really want to go back to my old life. It was so much better before."
