Chapter 5 A thief broke into the house

It was time to finish work in the village. Suddenly, Jinhua was heard shouting. Not knowing what had happened in the Zhao family, everyone rushed to the Zhao family without putting down their tools.

Huang Jinhua sat on the ground, crying loudly, she was even more sad than if her parents had died.

Captain Xiao, who was passing by, heard that something had happened in Lao Zhao's family, so he came in to inquire about the situation.

"Captain, please help me! The oil and bacon in the cupboard are missing. They're a year's worth!"

In this era, every household was extremely poor and it was rare for thieves to visit.

Captain Xiao also felt that this matter was of great importance and it was necessary to understand it clearly.

"When I left, the things were still in the cabinet. The old man can testify to that." Huang Jinhua said with tears and snot.

She then brought the captain into the house and pointed to the wardrobe and said, "The lock is not broken, but the things are missing."

"That's impossible. Everyone is working in the fields." The captain looked at her in disbelief.

Huang Jinhua took out the key from her underwear pocket, opened the cabinet and said, "Captain, take a look."

"This is impossible. Who would dare to steal things from your house in broad daylight? Besides, your daughter-in-law is at home in confinement after giving birth. How could anyone come in?" Captain Xiao still didn't believe it.

"Captain, you are only half right. It is difficult to guard against thieves in the house!" Huang Jinhua's words were directed at Wang Xiaolan.

The captain knew what Huang Jinhua meant. He frowned and looked at Wang Xiaolan who was coaxing the child.

"nonsense!"

A voice came from outside the door.

Huang Jinhua's words were interrupted, and the onlookers turned their heads to look at the door.

Zhaodi walked in angrily, rushed to Huang Jinhua, pointed at her nose and started scolding her.

"Old witch, you are slandering me again. My sister-in-law is not that kind of person."

Huang Jinhua said with certainty, "Who else could it be but her? She stole eggs from the cupboard several times right in front of your father and me."

"Since I can take it in front of you, is it still considered stealing?"

When the captain saw Huang Jinhua's attitude, he knew she was looking for trouble again.

"Zhaodi is right. Don't say harsh words."

Wang Xiaolan had no intention of joining Huang Jinhua's verbal battle, but Huang Jinhua kept provoking her with insulting words. Unable to bear it any longer, she handed Xiaobao to Lai Di and rushed to Huang Jinhua.

"Crazy woman, let me ask you, which eye did you see that with? Are you sure I stole that thing of yours?"

"I'm sure." Huang Jinhua's answer was still firm.

"Well, go search my room."

Huang Jinhua wanted Wang Xiaolan to say this, because she had planned it in advance and her purpose was to embarrass her.

The group came to Wang Xiaolan's room. Wang Xiaolan calmly opened the cabinet and let her rummage around inside.

Huang Jinhua ordered everyone to move the firewood away, cursing inwardly, "You little bitch, you're too young to fight me? I'll see how you get out of this situation."

Bundles of firewood were moved from their original positions, and the bottom was revealed to everyone.

Huang Jinhua never expected that the things she placed here would disappear without a trace. She was stunned and stood there for a long time, speechless.

She thought that everything she did was done without anyone noticing.

In fact, her every move had been discovered by Wang Xiaolan a long time ago. Wang Xiaolan quietly transferred those things back to Huang Jinhua's room without making a sound.

"Mother-in-law, have you found it?" Wang Xiaolan called her in a sarcastic tone.

When Huang Jinhua heard Wang Xiaolan call her that, she suddenly felt creepy.

Wang Xiaolan changed the subject: "Captain, since she searched my room, I have to search her room as well. This is fair."

"That's fine."

Huang Jinhua said hesitantly, "Captain, I think we should just forget it! Don't delay your meal."

Wang Xiaolan was unhappy and said, "Since you've caused the whole village to come, and the captain is here too, you have to give an explanation!"

The group came to Huang Jinhua's room again.

"Granny, did you open it with the key? Or did I break it open with the axe?"

Everyone's eyes were focused on Huang Jinhua, and she had to take out her key and open one of the cabinets.

"I told you, there's none here."

"Even if there's nothing there, we have to open it. What can one cabinet tell us? What about the rest?" Wang Xiaolan patted the cabinet door and said.

Huang Jinhua had no choice but to open the other cabinets obediently.

"Why don't you open this box?" Wang Xiaolan asked, pointing to the camphor wood box in the corner.

"This is my personal clothing, it's definitely not in here."

"I don't believe it."

Wang Xiaolan suddenly snatched the key from Huang Jinhua.

"If you don't open it, let me do it." Then he went to unlock it.

Huang Jinhua blocked Wang Xiaolan's way out and the two were in a stalemate.

The captain advised Huang Jinhua, "Aunt Sihai, please let her open it so I can report the thief who broke into your house to the brigade."

Huang Jinhua stared at the key in Wang Xiaolan's hand, motionless.

"Don't even think about letting me take the blame." Wang Xiaolan said without showing any weakness.

"Sister-in-law, Dad is back."

Zhaodi's cry distracted Huang Jinhua's attention. Wang Xiaolan took the opportunity to bypass her and went to the other side of the box. She quickly unlocked the box, opened the lid, and took out a barrel of oil from it.

Huang Jinhua was stunned. She remembered that the barrel of oil was in her room, so how did it end up here? Could it have grown legs?

Everyone was shocked.

"Mr. Zhao, you keep saying that Li Han's wife stole it, so how did the things get found in your box?"

Huang Jinhua was speechless and couldn't say anything for a long time.
