When assigning jobs, hospital leaders took into full consideration each person's professional skills and experience, assigning them to various military district hospitals. However, Wang Xiaolan and Tan Xiaofang were retained at the headquarters hospital because of their unique experience—they had come from the front lines.
The hospital leaders were well aware of the difficulties these two female soldiers had faced on the battlefield and their tremendous efforts in treating the wounded. Therefore, they decided to allow them to rest for a while to adjust their bodies and minds so that they could better adapt to their new work environment.
That day, Wang Xiaolan finished her breakfast as usual and was about to go to the mall to pick out some gifts for her parents and children. However, just as she was about to step out of the dormitory door, Tan Xiaofang suddenly appeared at the door, holding a letter in her hand. She smiled and said to her, "Doctor Wang, here is a letter for you."
Wang Xiaolan took the letter with some surprise. After a closer look, she discovered that the sender on the envelope was Zhao Laidi. She couldn't help but feel curious about what Zhao Laidi would say in the letter. Without hesitation, she opened the envelope and began to read.
Tan Xiaofang stood aside, quietly watching Wang Xiaolan read the letter attentively. After a while, she said softly, "Doctor Wang, please take your time reading the letter. I won't disturb you for now." After that, she turned around and prepared to leave.
When Wang Xiaolan heard what Tan Xiaofang said, she quickly raised her head, smiled and nodded to her to express her gratitude. Then, she continued to read the letter, completely immersed in its contents.
The contents of the letter surprised Wang Xiaolan. Zhao Laidi told her that the sanatorium they were staying in had already been built and everything was ready, waiting for her to return and take charge. After reading the letter, Wang Xiaolan was deeply moved. She knew this was an important decision that required careful consideration.
After careful consideration, Wang Xiaolan finally picked up a pen and wrote an application for transfer.
The hospital leader took her report to Wang Xiaolan and said with regret: "Doctor Wang Xiaolan, why do you want to change your career? The superiors are planning to promote you to be the vice president of our hospital. Is it because we have not taken good care of you?"
Wang Xiaolan smiled and said, "Thank you for your kindness, leaders. I'm going back for completely personal reasons, nothing else."
When the dean learned that Wang Xiaolan was determined to leave, he had no choice but to accept her application.
At this moment, Zhao Lihan rushed to the hospital. He learned that Wang Xiaolan was leaving to return home. Although he felt reluctant, he did not try to persuade her to stay. He knew that Wang Xiaolan had a firm dream deep in her heart - to own her own hospital.
When Zhao Lihan walked into Wang Xiaolan's dormitory, he saw her busy packing her luggage. He asked softly, "Wife, why didn't you tell me in advance that you were going back?"
Wang Xiaolan turned around with a faint smile on her face and replied, "I was planning to pack my luggage before going to see you. Since you're already here, please help me pack. It can be regarded as fulfilling your responsibilities as a husband!"
"Of course, daughter-in-law, you take a rest. Let me do it." As he said that, he cleaned up quickly.
After Zhao Lihan finished cleaning up, he placed his hands tightly on Wang Xiaolan's shoulders. He stared at Wang Xiaolan with a hint of apology in his eyes.
"I'm sorry, I can't go back with you."
He paused for a moment, then continued, "At present, the situation on the border is still very tense. Although there has not been a large-scale war like before, small-scale conflicts are occurring one after another." Zhao Li explained solemnly, his brows slightly furrowed, as if he was worried about the situation on the border.
He pulled Wang Xiaolan to sit beside him and said, "The superiors have appointed me as the commander-in-chief of the front-line headquarters. This is a heavy responsibility for me!" Zhao Li's voice was slightly low, revealing the pressure he felt. He was well aware of the importance of this position and the mission it carried. At this critical moment, he absolutely could not leave his post easily.
Wang Xiaolan leaned on Zhao Lihan's shoulder and said, "You're a man, capable of great things. I won't tie you down to my side. You stay here and guard the gates of our country. I'll go back and take care of our little family. I'm going back not only for the nursing home, but also for our third child who's about to be born."
Zhao Lihan was surprised to hear Wang Xiaolan say this and asked, "You are pregnant?"
Wang Xiaolan nodded and said, "Two months."
Zhao Lihan excitedly hugged Wang Xiaolan and kissed her, saying, "You should have told me earlier. It was really not easy for this child to come."
Wang Xiaolan smiled and said, "You are so busy at work, I don't want you to be distracted by my affairs. Don't worry! I am a doctor and I know how to take care of myself."
At this moment, hurried footsteps suddenly sounded in the corridor. Wang Xiaolan was startled and immediately jumped out of Zhao Lihan's arms as if she had received an electric shock. She then hurriedly tidied up her messy clothes.
Before she could completely tidy up, there was a knock on the door. Wang Xiaolan took a deep breath, calmed herself down, then quickly walked to the door and opened it.
Standing outside the door was Tan Xiaofang. There was a hint of anxiety on her face and a few beads of sweat on her forehead. It was obvious that she had come in a hurry.
As soon as she saw Wang Xiaolan, Tan Xiaofang couldn't wait to say, "Doctor Wang, are you leaving? I just heard about this from the dean. You're so stupid! This is the rising period of your career. Why would you give up such a good opportunity?"
Tan Xiaofang spoke quickly, as if afraid Wang Xiaolan would interrupt her. After finishing her words, she paused for a moment, took a breath, and then turned her gaze to Zhao Lihan, who was standing behind Wang Xiaolan. She continued, "Commander Zhao, why don't you persuade your wife to stay? Such a good opportunity doesn't always come around!"
Zhao Lihan smiled and gazed at Wang Xiaolan tenderly, as if she were the most precious treasure in the world. The corners of his mouth rose slightly, revealing his endless love for Wang Xiaolan.
However, when he turned his gaze to Tan Xiaofang, his expression became calm and composed, and he said in a calm and firm voice: "My wife has always been a very independent person. I will fully respect and support her ideas and decisions."
Upon hearing this, Tan Xiaofang flew into a rage. Her eyes widened, and she angrily scolded, "This is sheer nonsense! It's fine if your wife is going crazy, but why are you going crazy too? Are you the Zhao Lihan I know?"
She glared at Zhao Lihan angrily, as if she saw through him. Then, she turned her gaze to Wang Xiaolan and shook her head repeatedly, obviously very dissatisfied with Wang Xiaolan's behavior.
