I listened quietly as Wu Shi recounted his experiences. Perhaps Wu Shi had always wanted to confide in someone.
Wu Shi's eyes were full of nostalgia.
"But do you know what Chen Xi is? She was such a kind-hearted old lady, and she was beaten to death by thugs who were collecting protection money!"
"I was so weak back then, so weak that one kick from one of the thugs almost killed me."
"But the most ridiculous thing is that the two thugs got away with it."
"I've lost my shelter once again..."
When I heard this, my heart clenched.
"In the days that followed, I learned to collect bottles to earn money and help out at other people's shops. That's how I turned eight."
"That was the year I met my master in Z province."
"When I was picking up bottles on the street, I passed by a shopping mall and saw children my age with their parents riding on a rocking horse."
“I’m not afraid of you laughing at me. I was so envious back then. I even wondered why I didn’t have parents to let me experience all of this.”
Why is my life like this?
"Just as I was carrying the bag, my master suddenly started talking to me."
"I still remember my master saying to me: 'Child, if you feel that the world is unfair, why not follow me and gamble on a wonderful future?'"
"My master's words were like magic; I just followed along on a whim."
"More than a decade of trials and tribulations have brought Wu Shi to where he is today."
Even though I can no longer see any trace of myself from back then, I will always remember that child in the darkness.
"It is because I have been in the darkness for so long that I want to bring light to others as well."
"Whenever I'm unhappy or confused, I ride this rocking horse."
After saying that, Wu Shi stood up, a bright smile on his face, and gently extended his palm towards me:
"Chen Xi, want to give it a try?"
