Volume 1_Chapter 33: Be Rude

Zhuang Wan was speechless, shaking a piece of paper towards Su Tao:

"You dare to use all this garbage? Look, a child's sketch? Just some random doodles?"

Su Tao flipped through it and felt a little amused. Someone had only drawn four squares and handed them in.

"Thank you for your hard work. This is really like looking for a needle in a haystack. But we must find a professional to plan this. Otherwise, as the number of houses increases, it will become increasingly difficult for us to manage them."

Zhuang Wan nodded. "Indeed, the last time I went to look for Shuyu, I felt a little dizzy after coming out of her room. Every door looked like my room."

The two of them spent the entire afternoon in the study screening, looking through thousands of applications, and only picked out four or five candidates who felt good.

Zhuang Wan rubbed her aching neck and said, "I'll go arrange an interview. We'll try to finalize the designer before mid-April. I'm already looking forward to having more small squares and gardens in Taoyang. I could go for a walk after dinner and reading. It would be like a fairy tale."

In the past, in Dongyang, houses were built shoulder to shoulder, and the roads were extremely narrow. Almost every inch of land was utilized to the extreme, and it was impossible to have luxurious large-scale public land such as square gardens.

Su Tao was also extremely looking forward to it. She also wanted to build an office building for her, Zhuang Wan, and the staff who would later participate in the construction of Taoyang.

I just don't know where to build it that would be more suitable and beautiful.

I hope to find a reliable design planner who has aesthetic taste and experience.

However, things did not go as smoothly as Su Tao had imagined. Su Tao was not very satisfied with the several candidates who passed the resume screening and were interviewed.

Maybe because he was relatively young and was born in the end times, the first drafts he was given were very crowded, as if it was another Dongyang.

Extreme land utilization seems to be engraved in their bones, and they want to cram unlimited buildings onto the limited land.

Hurry, crowds and coldness are simply the main themes of this era.

The more Su Tao looked, the deeper her frown became.

Zhuang Wan tried to enlighten her: "This is great, it can accommodate more people in the future. We can expand it when we have money."

Su Tao knew that what she said was right, but her deep desire for a better living environment made it impossible for her to nod against her will.

After dinner, the couple living in the one-bedroom apartment No. 002 suddenly knocked on Su Tao's door.

Su Tao was quite surprised, because this military couple rarely showed up and didn't often interact with other tenants. They must have something wrong when they suddenly came to her house.

His wife's name is Tang Qingshu, and she speaks in a very friendly voice:

"Boss Su, I heard you've been looking for a community planner or space designer to do land planning for Taoyang, right? We have a very suitable person we'd like to recommend to you. This is the work of that teacher."

As he spoke, he handed over a thick folder that seemed to be filled with the owner's hard work.

Su Tao took it with both hands, opened the first two pictures, and her eyes lit up. She asked expectantly:

"This teacher should be quite old, right? I've noticed his previous designs all involved apocalyptic and peaceful environments. They look very comfortable and grand."

Tang Qingshu breathed a sigh of relief and said with a smile:

"Indeed, he's already 78 years old this year. Before the apocalypse, he worked on planning for urban areas at the provincial level and above, winning numerous awards. He's a very experienced teacher. However, after the apocalypse, there's no more extra land for him to shine."

Su Tao said: "Where does that teacher live? I want to find a suitable time to visit him."

Tang Qingshu and her husband looked at each other, and it was the husband who spoke first:

"Mr. Mei doesn't have his own place to live. He lives with his son and daughter-in-law in the base's welfare-based low-rent housing."

Tang Qingshu checked the communicator and gave Su Tao an address.

Su Tao thanked them and went to find Zhuang Wan and Guan Zining to go out together.

Tang Qingshu watched the three people leave in a hurry, held her husband's hand and said:

"I hope Mr. Mei can succeed. He's so old and still wandering around, and his son and daughter-in-law are not filial to him. It makes me sad just thinking about it. He used to be a professor lecturing college students, such a respectable person, but now he looks like this."

Her husband comforted her, "Boss Su is a sensible person. You see, she has been choosing for so long and still hasn't found anyone she's satisfied with. You know she's more concerned about the quality of life of the tenants than about exploiting the land to make money. She and Mr. Mei are of the same type. She will definitely be able to do it."

Tang Qingshu nodded: "Boss Su is a good man, but he is a little young, eh? Twenty years old, right? Still single, right? I have a nephew from my mother's family——"

The husband took her hand and left: "No ordinary man can catch her eye. Forget your matchmaking efforts."

"That's true."

Guan Zining parked the car on the street and said, "You two should get out first. The car can't enter the address we gave you."

As soon as Su Tao got out of the car, she stepped on the muddy dirt road. Every household was pouring out their domestic water, and the road was almost becoming a mud ditch.

Before the two men even walked in, curious residents looked at them from the windows on the uneven floors.

This is a shelter building near the East District. The people living here are a mixed bunch and the environment is very bad. It is rare for outsiders like Su Tao and Zhuang Wan to come here dressed so decently.

Looking at the environment, Su Tao immediately thought that the old man's life must have been very difficult, and she couldn't help but quicken her pace.

When we were almost at our destination, we suddenly heard someone yelling:

"You damn old man! You just keep drawing! You stay in the house all day drawing. I don't know what you're drawing. You can't help at all. I worry about the whole family. Ah! My life is miserable! I married a useless man and now I have a crazy father-in-law like you. I must have done something wrong in my past life!"

Su Tao stopped and saw a woman standing at the door of her house, holding the door and cursing inside.

The neighbors seemed to be used to it and did their washing and cooking on the narrow and muddy roadside without any disturbance.

Zhuang Wan looked at the doorplate and said, "This is it, but it seems like we've come at a bad time."

The woman seemed to have just noticed them and looked Su Tao and the other two up and down: "Who are you?"

Qualified assistant Zhuang Wan explained, "We're here to see Mr. Mei. Could you take us to visit him?"

Tan Fangchun rolled his eyes and said:

"Visiting? You're from the West District, right? What do you want to see him for? I won't let you into the house unless you tell me something."

Then he blocked the door in a naughty manner.

Zhuang Wan looked at Su Tao awkwardly, not knowing what to do. She was wondering whether she should give them some money before letting them in.

Su Tao felt that she was too polite and should be rude to such people, so she said to Tan Fangchun:

"He owes us money. Don't get in the way of us collecting it, or we'll hold it against you."

Zhuang Wan was stunned when she heard this.

Tan Fangchun was frightened on the spot and quickly dodged without hindering them again.

Su Tao successfully brought Zhuang Wan into the house. In the dim and crowded room, she saw a little old man sitting by the windowsill, concentrating on painting.
