Time flies when you're in the countryside. You wake up with the sun in the morning, have breakfast, tidy up, and it's noon. You take a nap until around 2 p.m., then do some writing and reading. Around 5 p.m., the sun sets, you stretch your muscles, and then it's time to prepare for lunch. After lunch, you take a walk, and then it's time to go to bed when it gets dark.
"I didn't do anything productive all day." That's my usual summary of a day of doing nothing, as I go to bed at night.
"We came here to escape the summer heat, what important business could we possibly be planning?"
"That's true, but if we spend all of it playing, it feels like we're wasting our time."
"You just like to put shackles on yourself."
"Who can argue with that?"
The day after they returned, the two went back to the old house to pay respects to their parents. The trap set by Bu Ke protected the old house well. Weeds grew wildly in the garden, and insects and birds chirped. Several owls even flew in, perched on fruit tree branches, watching the two who were having difficulty moving through the weeds. They only flapped their wings and flew away when the two approached.
"It feels like a text I've studied before."
"Take the grass as a forest, the insects and ants as beasts, the raised soil and gravel as hills, and the depressions as valleys, and wander in it with your mind, feeling happy and content."
"Shen Fu's 'Childhood Fun'".
"You all studied it too, and you thought it wasn't the same textbook."
"It's possible that every textbook includes it, and it's written in an interesting way, making it easier to memorize than others."
"Too."
"When I have time, I'd like to redesign the garden so that it will be our child's first playground after they are born."
"There is definitely time, but I'm afraid someone will get lazy and only use their brain without doing anything."
"Oh dear, I have a husband, and the father of my child also has to contribute his share."
"I'd rather contribute to making children."
"rogue!"
"Seriously, when are you planning to have children?" Zhuang Zhao asked Yan Shi.
"Before the age of thirty, medical conditions are better and you have money."
As the weather gradually became hot, Zhuang Zhao installed a rocking chair for Yan Shi in the shade behind the building and moved a few flowers. When it got hot at noon, Yan Shi would take a nap or read in the rocking chair and not feel hot at all.
In July, after finishing his exams, Yifan flew directly to District 1, where Zhuang Zhao picked him up by car, and the family of three was reunited.
Yifan had always lived in the city and had never seen the countryside before. Although he pretended to be uninterested, he put down his schoolbag and plunged into the garden of the old house and didn't come out.
When Yan Shi finished preparing dinner and still hadn't seen him, he suddenly realized that Yi Fan might not have stayed away because he was interested, but rather because he was trapped and couldn't get out.
I was too careless. Because the illusion array was ineffective against me and Zhuang Zhao, I forgot that it would also be effective against Yi Fan.
When she returned to the old house, she saw Yifan sleeping soundly in the luxurious hammock that Zhuang Zhao had made for her, hugging a pillow.
It felt like he was silently protesting, asking when you would remember him.
"Yifan, wake up, it's time to eat."
Yifan woke up as soon as she was called, and when she got off the hammock, she glanced at Yan Shi.
So you still remember me.
"It's my fault. If you want to eat something later, I'll have Zhuang Zhao make it for you."
"It's your fault for making Zhuang Zhao do it for me."
"Then what do you want?"
"Give me a little sister."
"Huh? Why?"
"No reason? You've been married for a long time, it's time to have a child. It's not like you don't like children."
"Why do you meddle in everything?" Yan Shi really didn't expect that the first child he would urge to have would be Yi Fan.
“If I have a little sister, I can help take care of her.” Yifan completely ignored Yan Shi’s question and talked to herself happily.
“Even if you have a girl, she won’t be a younger sister. If you call me older sister, then she’s my younger brother, my child’s uncle.”
"Then it's my uncle."
"We do have plans to get pregnant, but we don't know when we'll be able to conceive yet." Yan Shi touched her round belly. Perhaps she should lose some weight first, otherwise it would definitely be uncomfortable when her belly got bigger.
Since that conversation, Yan Shi has noticed that Yi Fan has been eagerly helping her with chores.
"I'm not pregnant yet, you don't need to treat me like I'm made of paper." Yan Shi said she didn't need to, but in her heart she was enjoying being pampered like a little princess.
"The internet says it's not easy to tell in the first month of pregnancy, and maybe there's already a baby in your belly."
"No way. Although I've never been pregnant, I know more than you do from the random bits and pieces you find online."
"Alright then." Yifan put the washed dishes into the cupboard and went back to his room with a regretful look on his face.
The second floor originally didn't have a single room, but Zhuang Zhao personally built an all-wood room for Yi Fan before he arrived. He wanted to protect his and Yan Shi's private space.
Yifan will start school in September, and the temperature in District 7 won't be cooler until September. There are still almost two months left, and I feel like I'm wasting this long and leisurely holiday if I don't do something about it.
After thinking about it, I decided to cover the greenhouse first. Before the apocalypse, my mother had always wanted to build a greenhouse in the garden to grow flowers, but in the end, she couldn't bear to leave the factory.
My mother worked hard her whole life, and her only hobby was growing flowers. At most, she would spend a few dollars to buy flower seeds online, but she couldn't bear to buy a pot that cost tens of dollars.
Ultimately, it's because she's not ambitious enough. Her job is unstable, she can't save much money, and she doesn't have a marriage prospect. Otherwise, her mother wouldn't have wanted to save more money for her dowry, fearing that she wouldn't have a good life in her later years.
She wanted to plant flowers all over her parents' graves to ease the guilt in her heart.
Zhuang Zhao and Yi Fan naturally gave their full support, and it took more than a week to complete the project. Looking at the size of the three rooms, they were looking forward to seeing them filled with flowers and plants.
"The heating equipment hasn't been installed yet; I'll look into which one to choose."
"No rush. It gets -20 or -30 degrees Celsius here in winter. How about we set aside another part of this area to make a greenhouse specifically for growing delicate flowers? The most delicate ones can be grown directly in the apartment building."
"Okay, all is well, but will you be staying here during the winter too?"
"Let's put this issue aside for now. Maybe I'll come here to retire in a few years."
"Then there's no rush."
After the greenhouse was completed, Yan Shi suddenly became interested in decorating. He took the opportunity to renovate the empty building, which had a water-filled basement, an empty first floor, and a well-lit second floor with bedrooms and a greenhouse.
With the renovations finished, there wasn't much vacation time left. I just lazed around inside, eating and drinking, which was a perfect way to end the holiday.
Back in District 7, Yan Shi lost her job at Dawn School and didn't have any intention of looking for work for a while. Besides writing at home, she went to Dawn School. She still cared about those few alien children.
The relationship between the alien and the human child is not always smooth sailing, and there are even many conflicts with the adults. After a semester of adjustment, they are now in a relatively harmonious state.
Some of the children even became completely friendly with the aliens, which terrified the alien children. They practically kept a 24-hour watch on them, fearing that they would be eaten by the aliens in the blink of an eye.
Yan Shi was thinking about returning to his hometown to develop his career, so he counted on his fingers looking for a partner, and finally set his sights on Yao Tang.
She has plenty of wild animals in Northeast China; I wonder if Yao Tang would be interested in taking a trip with her.
