Chapter Twenty-Eight: New Year's Fireworks

December 31, 2020, cloudy, windy.

Yan Shi and Zhuang Zhao both got up very early, left enough food for Xiao Hei, and took care of the doors, windows, gas, and water taps. The two of them carried their small bags and took a car to the temple fair.

Last night, Yan Shi originally wanted to go to bed early, but she got so excited that she couldn't fall asleep. So she asked everyone in the group where they were going to play tomorrow. Tong Ying and the others had to go to guard the gate of District 7. It was their team's turn to be on guard duty. Bu Qing and his sister were attending a warlock gathering. Yun Nuo was going to her uncle's house for dinner. Quan Hou was in the lab and wouldn't be coming back.

In the end, it was just the two of them.

There are plenty of early risers. Akishin Temple is the only temple in the city, which is why it was preserved. As for the temples in the suburbs or on the mountainside, I wonder what they are like now, and whether there are any survivors.

In front of Qiuzhen Temple is Qiuzhen Square. The so-called temple fair mainly consists of Qiuzhen Temple, Qiuzhen Square and the surrounding area. Qiuzhen Square is a bustling secular place, while Qiuzhen Temple is a place of carefree tranquility. They are like two different worlds.

The two walked hand in hand with the crowd, stopping and starting. Masks, glutinous rice cakes, acrobatics, sugar figurines, puppet shows, lamb skewers, dough figurines, osmanthus cakes, ring toss, lucky draw, roasted sweet potatoes, pea filling...

The square, which usually looks quite large, now feels like it's impossible to move an inch. I'm not in a hurry to move around, so I eat, drink, and watch the excitement without getting bored.

Having filled their stomachs, the two squeezed through the crowd and joined the procession to enter Qiuzhen Temple. As soon as they came out, they heard the chanting coming from inside the temple. This was specially prepared for the New Year, praying for favorable weather and peace in the coming year.

After passing through the secluded and winding red plum grove, touching the smooth and shiny lucky stone, and wearing the amulet for a long and healthy life, I even got tangled in a red thread when passing by the marriage array, which made me quite amused.

"Looks like you're going to have a lot of luck with romance this year," Zhuang Zhao said, helping her remove the red thread from her hair.

"Please spare me, I have no interest in romance or anything like that. Socially awkward people don't like relationships that require special effort to maintain."

"Is it okay if it doesn't need to be specially managed?"

"Maybe." Yan Shi thought for a moment, not giving a definitive answer. Being entangled with someone you don't like isn't a good thing either.

"And what about me?"

"You are different."

"How are they different?"

"I feel no pressure being with you, so I just let things take their natural course."

Zhuang Zhao: It doesn't sound like you like me, but if there's no one else, maintaining the status quo is fine.

"It is my honor."

"Exaggerated".

After wandering around and returning to the main hall, we paid our respects to the Buddha and bought red plum blossom pendants, one for each of us to hang on our keychains.

Where else should we go for fun?

I'm tired.

Are you hungry?

"fine."

"Shall we go to karaoke or video games?"

"I don't feel like I have the energy to play video games anymore, let's go to karaoke."

While crossing the square, Yan Shi bought a few more skewers of grilled meat. While waiting for the bus, he discovered that his shoelaces were untied.

"Hold this for me." Yan Shi handed the skewers in his hand to Zhuang Zhao.

"What's wrong?" Zhuang Zhao asked.

"My shoelaces are untied."

"Tell me next time and I'll tie it for you."

"That's not good, it's weird."

"What's wrong with it?"

The bus was crowded, so the two of them had to find a place to stand. At each stop, many people got on and off. Zhuang Zhao held Yan Shi in his arms, trying his best to prevent her from having physical contact with others.

"If I had known there would be so many people, I would have taken a taxi," Yan Shi complained.

"It's not easy to get a taxi over there, and you might have to wait a long time."

"I want to open the window," Yan Shi whispered to Zhuang Zhao, standing on tiptoe.

Yan Shi felt a little embarrassed to open the window during this season, but the car was crowded and the air quality wasn't very good, so she was a bit carsick.

"I'll do it." Zhuang Zhao freed one hand to open the window.

"Just a crack will do; we'll close it after we get off the bus."

Yan Shi used to be too embarrassed to open the car window, and sometimes she couldn't even open it, which was incredibly awkward.

She didn't know when it started, but she felt comfortable bothering Zhuang Zhao, and even enjoyed the times when he did these things for her.

I still wanted to belt out a song, but I couldn't find a song I liked on the playlist. I was still feeling carsick, so I fell asleep while listening to Zhuang Zhao's singing.

Zhuang Zhao noticed that Yan Shi had turned off the music after falling asleep, and sat next to her, staring at her.

When Yan woke up, it was already dark outside.

"It's so late, why didn't you wake me?" Yan Shi said, wiping his drool.

Being woken up is bad for your heart.

"How much harm can that do? It'll just make you feel a little panicked for a moment."

"Let's go eat. Think about what you want to eat." Zhuang Zhao helped Yan Shi put on her coat.

"If you want to eat street food, go to the snack street."

Let's go.

"I hope I can buy fireworks on the way back. I feel like the moon and fireworks would go really well together."

"They will be available for sale."

Although it was already dark, New Year's Eve is always much brighter than usual.

After filling my stomach at the food street, I bought a lot of trinkets in addition to fireworks.

"It feels like a long-lost peaceful and prosperous era." Yan Shi said while eating double-skin milk on the way back, which reminded her of her college days when she and her roommates would pass by the night market on their way back to the dormitory after going out to eat. They would always buy a bowl of double-skin milk and eat it as they walked.

"Um."

"I don't know how they are doing. I contacted them once before. One is in the third northern region and the other is in the fourth coastal region. I haven't been able to contact the other one. She may no longer be alive."

"I would really like to get together with them if I have the chance. We were pretty close in college."

"There will definitely be opportunities. If you want, wait until this wave of zombies leaves and then head to another safe zone."
