Chapter Twenty-Three: Who Knows If It's Not a Blessing?

The battle to defend District 7 against the zombies lasted for several days. No one expected that the temperature would drop suddenly and the flu would break out. Zhuang Zhao also caught the flu and had a high fever, making him dizzy and unable to walk steadily.

Yan Shi rarely suffered from such a serious condition and had little experience. While boiling water and searching for medicine, he called Quan Hou to ask him which medicine he should take.

Finally, I gave him two fever-reducing pills. If the fever didn't go down, he would have to get an IV drip.

"I don't really want anything to eat," Yan Shi asked him while rinsing the rice.

"Think about it again. Fruits, snacks, and the like are the first things that need to be appealing."

"Sour, sweet, cold, bitter, anything is fine, I'm sure I can find something for you." Seeing that Zhuang Zhao seemed unable to think of anything, Yan Shi simply gave him options to choose from.

"It's cold."

"I'll go out and buy some later. I'll start cooking the porridge first. Are you alright at home by yourself?"

"It's just a cold."

"That's right, I'll be right back. Call me if anything happens."

After Yan Shi left, the room returned to silence, with only his own labored breathing and the snoring cat beside him.

Zhuang Zhao fell asleep shortly afterward. When he heard the knocking, he was still annoyed that he had kept Yan Shi waiting for so long. He thought Yan Shi had forgotten his keys, so he rushed to open the door and bumped his head on the corner of the table. But it wasn't Yan Shi at the door.

Zhuang Zhao: Suddenly I got angry and wanted to take action.

What are you doing here?

"Don't be so cold. I only came to see you because I heard you had a bad cold and couldn't get out of bed."

"What's so interesting?" Zhuang Zhao wouldn't even talk to him when he wasn't sick, let alone now that he was so listless.

"Where is your sweetheart? You really left yourself at home. You were at home taking care of her during her period last time, how come she's gone as soon as you catch a cold?"

"Stop being sarcastic. She went shopping. Go check on the porridge in the kitchen."

"Ah, no wonder it tasted weird, it's some kind of culinary disaster."

"If you can't speak properly, then shut up." Zhuang Zhao frowned, wishing she could kick him out.

Han Yan didn't care about Zhuang Zhao's obvious dissatisfaction. He strolled to the kitchen, lifted the lid to check if the fire had burned dry, and seeing that there was hot water, he poured himself a cup.

"I think the porridge is almost ready. Would you like me to serve you a bowl?"

"We'll eat together when she gets back."

"Tsk tsk, I can't stand your pathetic attitude."

"If you say anything out of line in front of Yan Shi later, believe me, I'll make you lose your voice." After Zhuang Zhao finished speaking, he reached out to break the banana. He couldn't break it with one hand, and was about to reach out his right hand to help when Han Yan took the lead and broke it for him, peeling the skin before handing it over.

"I'm standing up for you."

"No need."

Where's your cat?

"You want to hug the cat?"

"Yeah, I've been itching to come over ever since you said you picked up a cat, but I haven't been able to find the time."

"The cat belongs to Yan Shi. You'll have to ask if you're allowed to hold it." Zhuang Zhao said, lifting a corner of the blanket to reveal the cat that had burrowed into the bed.

"This cat is a bit ugly," Han Yan said, finding it hard to put into words.

Zhuang Zhao slapped the blanket over the cat. To make it easier to apply the medicine, a lot of the cat's fur had been shaved off. In the dead of winter, he was afraid the cat would catch a cold. Some parts of the cat hadn't been shaved yet. No matter what kind of cat it is, it won't look good if its fur is shaved like this.

Besides, even if someone is truly ugly, no one wants to hear it from someone else.

Although Zhuang Zhao didn't care whether the cat was ugly or not, the cat belonged to Yan Shi, and to him, this was a way of saying bad things about Yan Shi.

"You can go now."

"Since I'm already here, I have to see your beloved before I leave. I want to see which celestial maiden has captivated you so much that you'd be willing to go through fire and water for her."

"Be careful with your words and actions, I understand."

"I'm not stupid."

Zhuang Zhao: He's not very smart either.

Han Yan went to the kitchen to check on the porridge again. When he came back, he tried to pet the cat when Zhuang Zhao wasn't looking, but Zhuang Zhao slapped his hand away halfway through.

Did you wash your hands?

"Go wash right away."

While Han Yan was washing his hands, Yan Shi returned.

The moment Zhuang Zhao heard the door lock click, her heart began to race. What if Han Yan suddenly said something that would upset Yan Shi? What if Yan Shi didn't like Han Yan? What if Han Yan hated her because of him?

So why did Han Yan, this troublemaker, come here? They haven't known each other for very long, and he hasn't shown any signs of wanting to befriend her.

"How are you? Has your fever gone down?" Yan Shi took off her coat and came straight into Zhuang Zhao's room, placing the food she had bought in front of Zhuang Zhao as she spoke.

"How could it be so fast?"

"Let's have something appetizing first. I'll go check on the porridge; it doesn't smell burnt."

"My colleague is here, he's in the restroom."

"Which colleague?" Yan Shi asked him in a low voice.

"Han Yan, he's very outgoing and likes cats."

"Ah, that talisman sorcerer."

"Is he going to eat here?"

"Don't worry about it, he'll just grab it himself if he wants to eat it."

"Then eat in your room, so you don't have to get up."

When Yan Shi left the room, Han Yan had just returned. Yan Shi didn't know how to greet him, so he nodded as a greeting and went to the kitchen to get busy.

Pickled vegetables, rice porridge, steamed buns, smashed cucumber, a spoonful of the spicy eggplant I made earlier, and two boiled eggs.

The eggs were all boiled for Zhuang Zhao, because she didn't like them.

While Yan Shi was busy in the kitchen, Han Yan whispered to Zhuang Zhao.

"It's small and cute, but it seems a bit aloof and doesn't like to talk to people. Wouldn't it be boring to be with someone like that all the time?"

"Shut up, you're such a chatterbox, it's annoying." Besides, Yan Shi is quite talkative when he's with him, which is great, because he sees things that outsiders can't.
