Chapter Twenty-Two: The Devilish Sound Piercing the Ears

After a round of fighting, the squad that went into battle withdrew to rest and replenish their energy and stamina.

"I feel like my black hole is even stronger now." Yan Shi said, sipping his instant noodle soup while examining the black hole in his palm.

"You're only a beginner now, but you'll get better and better."

"Do you know about Maitreya's Wind Cave? His father died because of the backlash from the Wind Cave."

"The Maitreya Wind Cave is a curse; you are a mutation."

"Many of those who were experimentally modified and mutated went insane, stupid, or broke down later."

"Then there's no need. Even without our special abilities, we can survive in District Seven."

"Killing zombies is addictive. If you don't touch zombies for a long time, your hands will shake like you have Parkinson's."

This was the first time Zhuang Zhao had heard of such a thing. Regardless of whether the mutation had any aftereffects, anything addictive was definitely not a good thing.

"Don't make that face. Compared to those who were bitten to death from the start, all this time I've gained is a bonus. Be content with what you have and have no regrets." Yan Shi poured the leftover soup from Zhuang Zhao's instant noodle bucket into his own bucket, then stacked it up and threw it away.

"Go get some sleep, you'll be busy this evening."

Yan Shi took out a sleeping bag and an eye mask from his bag and gave them to Zhuang Zhao. The two found a sheltered spot and went to sleep.

Zhuang Zhao wasn't as carefree as Yan Shi. He said he was going to sleep, but he only dozed off for a short while before being woken up. So he simply sat up and stared at Yan Shi.

Yan Shi was currently being tormented by a dream. The plot was illogical and the first-person perspective was completely unimmersive. Even though he knew it was a dream and could feel the fatigue in his mind, he just couldn't wake up.

I was eventually woken up by the noise. It sounded like some guy who loves to sing was outside, singing "ah ah" all the time, and it gave me a headache.

"You're awake." Zhuang Zhao handed over a bottle of water.

"What's that noise? It's so noisy!"

"It's a different species, isn't it? The sound is weird and unpleasant to listen to."

"Yeah, it's so annoying, let's go find him."

Yan Shi stormed out in a huff, and Zhuang Zhao rolled up her sleeping bag, stuffed it into her bag, and then chased after her.

"Yan Shi is really a whirlwind."

"It's fortunate that Zhuang Zhao has a good temperament."

"Hmm? You mean Zhuang Zhao has a good temper? Well, while you can't say he has a bad temper, he definitely doesn't have a good temper."

"Indeed, you can tell that he's only giving us face because of Yan Shi."

"Am I the only one who thinks he has a good personality? It seems my taste in men isn't very good."

"You can be a thief for a thousand days, but you can't guard against thieves for a thousand days. Some bad people can pretend to be more virtuous than good people, but those who really have their eyes on you are not those you can guard against."

"This is so difficult!"

On the other side

After Yan Shi went out, he followed the sound and saw out of the corner of his eye that many teams were fighting against the aliens. After all, the guy who could jump three meters high was too eye-catching.

Yan Shi glanced back to make sure Zhuang Zhao was following before continuing forward.

The singer stood on the bridge, waving his hands to the tune, as if he were performing on stage.

The closer you are, the more you are affected by the sound. It gives me a terrible headache. The bridge is quite high, and you have to take a long detour to get on it.

As Yan Shi was worrying about how to get onto the bridge, Zhuang Zhao had already taken out a rope from his bag that was easy to climb with—the kind that could pull people up in a flash.

"Wow, it's so great to have you here."

Yan Shi used the momentum to get up, and the alien species finally woke up from its own world and noticed that two living people were approaching.

He hesitated for a moment, torn between music and living people, unsure which was more appealing to him.

Taking advantage of his hesitation, Yan Shi rushed over and reached out with his left hand to touch the other man's chest.

If she were 1.8 meters tall, she could freely touch the heads of zombies, instead of being forced to choose the one closest to her left hand, as she is now.

They weren't stupid; they dodged the last two steps and grabbed Yan Shi's arm from the side.

"It's an unpleasant taste." He even complained about it.

"Likewise." Yan Shi turned his left hand, placed his palm against his body, and directly sucked the flesh and bones of his waist into it, leaving only a skeleton in his waist and abdomen.

The alien instinctively threw Yan Shi away, looked down at its own skeletal waist and abdomen, and didn't know what to say.

It doesn't seem to have any impact, it just feels a bit empty.

Zhuang Zhao had just climbed up and hadn't even gotten a good footing when he saw Yan Shi fly out. He quickly ran a few steps forward and caught Yan Shi, otherwise Yan Shi might have ended up under the bridge.

"The aliens are all so powerful, it doesn't make sense." Yan Shi was furious. He had been thrown around like that last time, a great humiliation.

"I'll restrict his movement." Zhuang Zhao let go after Yan Shi stood firm. His two puppet pigs had just climbed up, so he aimed his gun. Even if he didn't hit him, he would embed himself in the bridge pillar to restrict his movement.

Yan Shi didn't rush in for close combat, but instead used his gun to help Zhuang Zhao block the alien's movements.

The gun in her hand was custom-made for zombies. It didn't have a long range, and the bullets weren't very fast, but the bullets would explode the moment they hit a zombie. The fragments would travel a distance along the direction of the explosion, causing a secondary explosion and resulting in damage over a larger area.

The alien creature showed no fear; after creating some distance, it began to sing.

The sound, similar to fingernails scratching a blackboard or metal stool legs scraping against the floor tiles, almost sent Yan Shi away.

"Can't you make some sounds like those of the living world?" Yan Shi was so angry he wanted to punch someone.

"Isn't it nice? It's so nice!"

"If you were to hold a concert like this, you'd have to pay someone to fill all the seats."

"My kind all love to hear this, it's just that you humans don't like it, but I don't like humans either." The alien's tone suddenly changed in the second half of the sentence, and like a vengeful ghost, it came right up to Yan Shi's face, its nails extended, its fingers together, its palm flat, like a knife stabbing into Yan Shi's heart.
