It was completely dark outside, and even the streetlights couldn't dispel the darkness. Yan Shi didn't know where to go, so he wandered around the street with his suitcase.
There was hardly anyone on the road. The lights in the inner area were flashing in the distance, while the lights in the outer area, including the streetlights, were dim. It was as if people lived in two different worlds.
Yan Shi found a sheltered spot to spend the night. Luckily, she had a sleeping bag in her suitcase, otherwise she might have quietly died in a corner tomorrow without anyone noticing, and might even have been cursed for bad luck.
Yan Shi was busy looking for work, and initially planned to live in District 11 for a while, and leave when he got tired of the food there.
Then, on her first day of job hunting, Yan Shi wavered. Most of the positions were already filled; the only vacancies were for temporary laborers and hunters who dealt with zombies, and she dared not take the risk.
If you don't want to reveal your identity, you have no choice but to do manual labor, like unloading. The wages are paid daily, but you don't earn much. You barely make ends meet by paying for rent and food.
After a few days, Yan Shi felt something was wrong. She couldn't save any money like this, and how could she afford to eat fancy meals without money? She had no choice but to rack her brains for a solution.
Otherwise, become a hunter.
"Hunter" is a term used to refer to people who specialize in hunting zombies. In Area 11, it's possible to exchange zombie heads for money, but what exactly they're used for is unclear.
Most hunters go out to hunt zombies in teams. Yan Shi was initially torn between joining an existing team or going solo. When he arrived at the location, he saw a dispute at the entrance. After listening for a while, it seemed to be about uneven distribution within the team.
Okay, I'll do it myself.
The registrant noticed that Yan Shi was the only young girl there, and glanced at her a couple more times. When she saw that Yan Shi's information said she was an ordinary person, she glanced at her even more.
"Actually, there are quite a few jobs in the city as well," the registrant suggested tactfully.
"Don't worry, I'm pretty strong," Yan Shi reassured her.
"Take this access pass. They're buying heads over there. Besides heads, they also need blood. Use this to collect it. Collect one piece from each zombie, preferably with the corresponding head. You can rent protective gear over there; it's not too expensive. Safety is the most important thing." The registrar carefully reminded her, afraid she might forget something and cause harm.
Yan Shi was deeply moved. What an amazing young lady! She's just too wonderful.
Yan Shi left with a large bundle of things in his arms. Looking at the blue sky outside, he felt a change in his mood. He felt a little more fond of humans, just a little bit more.
It was still early, so Yan Shi thought he would go out for a stroll first. The registration lady told him that most people were hunting near the safe zone because zombies would be attracted by the scent, and as long as there were people, there would be a constant stream of zombies rushing over.
According to statistics, as of now, the number of people turned into zombies far exceeds the number of survivors and the number of dead.
I don't know how this data was compiled.
Yan Shi rode her tricycle out. She remembered that there were quite a few zombies in the village she had passed through before, and many of the vegetable gardens in the village were still in good condition. Vegetables in the safe zone were too expensive, and she couldn't afford them.
After leaving the safe zone, Yan Shi first wandered around the area, secretly observing how other teams hunted zombies.
With proper preparation, a small number of zombies pose little threat, which makes humanity's future seem quite promising.
The black hole in Yan Shi's palm can devour the heads of zombies, so he can't use it if he wants to make money. Fortunately, with the advice of the registrar, he rented a laser knife specifically for chopping off heads, which greatly reduced the difficulty.
Wearing a little armor, they would target lone zombies or walk a distance away to make sure no one was around before diving into the zombie horde to harvest them.
It is said that taking a life is a process of going from fear to numbness (except for a few perverts who enjoy torture). Once people lose their reverence for life, they will not feel guilty or afraid of killing.
What are zombies? Their hideous, rotting faces still vaguely resemble human outlines. The only thing that makes one feel at ease is the murky look in their eyes, devoid of any pleading or sorrowful emotions. This allows one to hypnotize oneself before taking action, to convince oneself that they are not human, or even life.
People, once they're full, tend to ponder philosophy and then become indecisive. Yan Shi, fearing she might be too lenient with the zombies, would pick a few flowers and bury them by the roadside before taking action each day. Remembering her parents' passing, she became even more decisive and efficient in her actions.
Yan Shi, engrossed in honing his skills and saving money, failed to notice that his heroic bearing had been discovered and that someone was eyeing him.
"Zhuang Zhao, where did you go? Everyone's waiting for you."
"Let's see if there are any zombies left." Zhuang Zhao pushed aside the tall weeds and crawled out.
"Is there?"
"No, let's go."
How badly are you hurt?
"fine."
"That's good. Don't run around like that next time. What if zombies come while you're not here?"
"Okay," Zhuang Zhao obediently agreed.
If it were her, she certainly wouldn't be as incompetent as him.
That night, Zhuang Zhao dreamed of her again. He dreamed that she reached out to him, but just as he touched her hand, she let go.
After waking up, Zhuang Zhao fell into deep thought. What kind of boy would she like? What kind of boy would she date? She was so outstanding, she would definitely have outstanding boys pursuing her.
After a while, Yan Shi had much more money. He would often buy some meat, a fish, and vegetables to go and have a meal with Bu Qing and his sister, since Bu Qing's cooking was even better than what you could buy outside.
On the way back from the free meal, the alarm suddenly went off. People around me panicked and scattered, jostling and pushing like loaches being thrown into a pot.
Completely bewildered, Yan Shi stared blankly. Could someone come out and tell her what the alarm meant?
